SorobanLard — Backend Repo

NestJS API for Africa's practical skills online learning platform

This is Repo 2 of 3 in the SorobanLard project:

Repo Description
sorobanlard-contract Soroban smart contract (Rust) — payments + certificates
sorobanlard-backend ← you are here NestJS REST API — content, progress, users
sorobanlard-frontend Next.js — student and instructor portal

What This Backend Does

The backend is the content and user management layer of SorobanLard. It handles everything that does not need to be on-chain:

  • User management — student and instructor profiles, role management
  • Course content — course creation, module and lesson organisation, video management
  • Progress tracking — lesson-level watch progress, enrollment percentage, completion detection
  • Assignment workflow — practical submission upload and instructor review
  • Certificate issuance — triggers on-chain certificate after verifying 100% completion
  • Event polling — listens to the Stellar contract for enrollment and certificate events
  • File uploads — thumbnails, lesson videos, downloadable resources, assignment submissions
  • Notifications — in-app and email alerts for all platform activity

Health

Readiness probe for container orchestrators (no auth; exempt from IP rate limiting via rate-limit.middleware.ts).

Method Path Description
GET /health Aggregate readiness check: Postgres (Prisma ping), Redis (ping), Meilisearch (health) + informational event-poller checkpoint
GET /health/checkpoint Authoritative Stellar event-poller ledger checkpoint status (crash recovery)

Response shape for GET /health — 200 when every critical dependency is up, 503 (via ServiceUnavailableException) as soon as one is down, so orchestrators stop routing traffic to the unhealthy instance:

{
  "status": "ok",
  "info": {
    "database":   { "status": "up" },
    "redis":      { "status": "up", "roundTripMs": 3 },
    "meilisearch":{ "status": "up", "roundTripMs": 7 },
    "event_poller_checkpoint": {
      "status": "up",
      "checkpointHealthy": true,
      "lastProcessedLedger": 5123,
      "persistedLedger": 5123,
      "lastPolledAt": "2026-08-27T12:00:00.000Z",
      "resumedFromCheckpoint": true,
      "consecutiveWriteFailures": 0,
      "lastWriteError": null
    }
  },
  "error": {},
  "details": {
    "database":   { "status": "up" },
    "redis":      { "status": "up", "roundTripMs": 3 },
    "meilisearch":{ "status": "up", "roundTripMs": 7 },
    "event_poller_checkpoint": { "status": "up", "checkpointHealthy": true }
  }
}
  • info — keys of every indicator that reported up (with per-indicator metadata, e.g. Redis/Meilisearch round-trip latency in roundTripMs).
  • error / details — on failure contain the failed indicator payload (e.g. redis: { "status": "down", "message": "ECONNREFUSED ..." }); details always includes every indicator. status becomes "error" and the endpoint returns 503.
  • event_poller_checkpoint is informational only: a degraded checkpoint (write failures) still reports 200 so the poller never pulls the whole service out of rotation; consult /health/checkpoint for the authoritative state.

Course Lifecycle

Instructor creates course → status: DRAFT
Instructor uploads content → (lessons, modules added via API)
Instructor registers on-chain → register_course() via Freighter
Instructor submits for review → POST /courses/:id/submit → PENDING
Admin reviews course → GET /courses/admin/pending
Admin approves                 → POST /courses/:id/approve → ACTIVE
                                  + approve_course() called on-chain
Students can now enroll → enroll() via Freighter

Certificate Lifecycle

Student completes all lessons → progressPercent = 100
Backend marks enrollment COMPLETED
Admin calls POST /certificates → DB record created
Admin calls issue_certificate() on Stellar → on-chain certificate
Admin calls PATCH /certificates/:id/tx-hash → updates DB with txHash
Student can share /certificates/verify/:id → public verification

Setup

Requires Node.js >= 20 — package.json declares engines.node and .nvmrc pins the major version used for local dev and CI (nvm use picks it up; CI's actions/setup-node reads it via node-version-file).

nvm use
cp .env.example .env # fill in your values
npm install
npx prisma migrate dev --name init
npx prisma generate
npm run start:dev

API: http://localhost:3000/api/v1 Swagger: http://localhost:3000/docs

Running Tests

npm run test
npm run test:cov

Production Checklist

  • Replace in-memory nonce store with Redis
  • Wire up Keypair.verify() in auth.service.ts
  • Swap local file upload (UploadsModule) for AWS S3 or Cloudinary
  • Persist lastProcessedLedger in DB for crash recovery
  • Set strong JWT_SECRET
  • Set CORS_ORIGIN to frontend production URL
  • Use HTTPS behind nginx or Caddy

Comprehensive Diagnostic, Architecture & Resolution Guide: TypeScript Module Resolution Misconfiguration (TS5095) in Containerized Build Pipelines

Executive Summary & Root Cause Analysis

In TypeScript 5.0+, the compiler strictly enforces compatibilities between module system targets (compilerOptions.module) and module resolution strategies (compilerOptions.moduleResolution).

When tsconfig.json specifies:

{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "module": "commonjs",
    "moduleResolution": "bundler"
  }
}

The TypeScript compiler (tsc) immediately aborts during compiler option validation—prior to parsing, AST generation, or type-checking any source files—with the following fatal error:
error TS5095: Option 'bundler' can only be used when 'module' is set to 'preserve' or to 'es2015' or later.

Why This Breakdown Occurs
 * The Role of moduleResolution: "bundler": Introduced in TypeScript 5.0, bundler models how modern frontend/backend bundlers (such as Webpack, Vite, esbuild, SWC, or Rollup) resolve import paths. Bundlers natively support ECMAScript Module (ESM) syntax (import/export), dynamic imports, package .exports fields, and extensions without requiring Node.js legacy CommonJS resolution hacks.
 * The Conflict with module: "commonjs": Setting module: "commonjs" instructs tsc to transform ES module syntax into CommonJS require() calls and exports.foo statements. However, bundler resolution assumes that the downstream bundler—not tsc—handles module emission or that code is strictly written using ESM semantics. Combining commonjs output with modern bundler path resolution is fundamentally contradictory within the TypeScript 5.x type system.
 * Pipeline Propagation:
   * Local development using npx tsc --noEmit fails immediately.
   * Local build scripts running npm run build (defined as tsc && node -e ...) fail.
   * Containerized CI/CD builds running RUN npm run build inside Dockerfile fail at the builder stage, completely blocking image generation and deployment pipelines.

Remediation Strategies & Architectural Trade-offs
To fix TS5095, select the strategy that best aligns with your execution runtime:
| Strategy | module setting | moduleResolution setting | Ideal For | Runtime Output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Option A: Pure Node.js CommonJS (Recommended for standard Node) | "CommonJS" | "Node10" (or "Node") | Traditional Node.js without bundlers | CommonJS (require) |
| Option B: Modern Node.js ESM Engine | "Node16" or "NodeNext" | "Node16" or "NodeNext" | Modern Node.js (v18+) with ES Modules | Native ESM (import) |
| Option C: Bundled Build Pipeline | "ES2022" or "Preserve" | "bundler" | Projects processed via esbuild/swc/webpack | Modern ESM emitted to bundler |
Detailed Remediation Implementations
Solution Option A: Target Node.js Legacy CommonJS Runtime (Standard Fix)
If your runtime uses standard Node.js without a bundler (esbuild/tsup/webpack) and relies on CommonJS module loading (require), adjust moduleResolution to match commonjs.
Corrected indexer/tsconfig.json (CommonJS Path)
{
  "$schema": "[https://json.schemastore.org/tsconfig](https://json.schemastore.org/tsconfig)",

    "declaration": true,
    "sourceMap": true
  },
  "include": ["src/**/*"],
  "exclude": ["node_modules", "dist", "tests"]
}

Solution Option B: Target Native ECMAScript Modules (ESM)
If you wish to retain bundler or modern resolution while taking advantage of Node's native ES Module system:
 * Add "type": "module" to package.json.
 * Update tsconfig.json to use Node16 or NodeNext for both module and moduleResolution.
Updated indexer/package.json (ESM Path)

Hardened Multi-Stage Dockerfile Execution
The revised Dockerfile below eliminates build failures by implementing layered caching, strict dependency verification via npm ci, and clean multi-stage artifact extraction.
# ==========================================
# Stage 1: Dependency Cache & Build Stage
# ==========================================
FROM node:20-alpine AS builder

WORKDIR /app

# Copy dependency manifests
COPY package.json package-lock.json ./

# Clean install all dependencies (including devDependencies)
RUN npm ci

# Copy configuration and source files
COPY tsconfig.json ./
COPY src/ ./src/

# Run type check explicitly to validate configuration
RUN npx tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.json

# Execute build script
RUN npm run build

# ==========================================
# Stage 2: Minimal Runtime Stage
# ==========================================
FROM node:20-alpine AS runner

WORKDIR /app

ENV NODE_ENV=production

# Install production dependencies only
COPY package.json package-lock.json ./
RUN npm ci --only=production && npm cache clean --force

# Copy compiled JavaScript output from builder stage
COPY --from=builder /app/dist ./dist

# Non-root security user
USER node

EXPOSE 3000

CMD ["node", "dist/index.js"]
