Replaces #615. GitHub marked #615 merged into its old base when the stack was reordered, so this draft carries the same branch.

Problem

Teams in the sandbox sender trial get a managed sender on the Channels page (feat(workflows): show the managed sandbox sender in channels #602), but a workflow email step cannot pick it yet. The layer below hides it from every picker.
The sandbox sender only reaches verified members of the organization, so it must not mix with own senders in a rotation, carry a custom From or Reply-To, or appear in broadcasts and transactional templates. feat(workflows): validate sandbox sender use at save time #603 enforces this at save time; the editor should not offer what the save rejects.
This PR sits on feat(workflows): test templates with the sandbox sender #628. It replaces the email-step part of feat(workflows): offer the sandbox sender in workflow email steps #450. Ticket: Silthus/personal#201.

Stack

Slice V2 of the sandbox sender rollout: workflow email steps use the sandbox sender, and saves check it. Slice order: feat(workflows): offer the sandbox sender in workflow email steps #629 → feat(workflows): validate sandbox sender use at save time #603 → feat(workflows): confirm before the sandbox sender replaces senders #616.
Base: workflows-sandbox-product/test-sends (feat(workflows): test templates with the sandbox sender #628). Lands after slice V1, whose top is feat(workflows): test templates with the sandbox sender #628.
Production lines: 332 (tests, stories, generated types, migrations and docs excluded).
Rebuilt on 2026-10-28 on the current master, in the new slice order. Uses the sender note from feat(workflows): test templates with the sandbox sender #628 below it. Merged with master's removal of the media library flag. The docs now say the email step offers the sandbox sender.
Lane gate on fc8cf92425d: frontend typecheck has no errors in the stack's files (the remaining errors also occur on master), oxlint and oxfmt clean, touched Jest suites 106 passed. Review: GPT-6.1 Sol through a delegated review of the restack (each PR's diff, its conflict resolutions, the slice seams and the save gate), no findings.
Proof on fc8cf92425d, 2026-10-28: live run and UI walk below. Proof gate: fails only on the fork-only ci gap (exit 3); every other check passes.

Impact

Pays into Workflows activation (first billed action after a team creates its first workflow), through the sandbox funnel step: a flagged team can now send a first workflow email to itself before it verifies a domain.

Every workflow email step, destination and transactional template editor now reads its sender list from emailTemplaterLogic, and every sender pick goes through one chooseSenders action. A bug there could change which sender a step saves, for any team.
Limited by: without a sandbox row the list is ownEmailIntegrations, the same senders as before; selectSenders keeps own-sender picks and the rotation limit as on master; logic, picker and summary tests cover both sides; the sandbox option needs workflows-sandbox-sender.

Changes

With workflows-sandbox-sender on, a workflow email step lists the sandbox sender last, tagged "Sandbox". Once selected, the picker reads "Delivers only to verified members of your organization."
Picking the sandbox sender keeps only it: it replaces a rotation, clears the custom sender address and name, and clears and hides Reply-To. The "Custom sender" button hides while it is selected.
Adding an own sender while the sandbox sender is selected drops the sandbox sender, so it never joins a rotation.
A step saved with the sandbox sender still lists it after the flag turns off, so the picker can replace it instead of showing a bare id.
Broadcast steps, destinations and transactional templates keep leaving it out. The transactional template's sender summary and form no longer list it, and the Broadcasts empty state and content step no longer count it as a sender.
Only a function_email step outside broadcasts offers the sandbox sender. A generic function step that uses the email template does not, because the save rejects it there. HogFlowFunctionConfiguration takes the step's action type as a required prop to decide this.
Mechanical: an emailSandboxSenderAllowed prop through CyclotronJobInputs.
Not here: no confirmation before the switch, and no Before-you-send copy. Both follow in feat(workflows): confirm before the sandbox sender replaces senders #616. The email step does not provision the sandbox sender; opening Channels does (feat(workflows): show the managed sandbox sender in channels #602).

Production lines (tests and inline kea typegen excluded): 332, from git diff --numstat against #628.

How did you test this code?

Live run on the slice tip

Live run of the V2 tip 7f851f2a9dc on a PostHog preview. Stubs: a local SES endpoint that records each call, and example.com seeded as a valid MX domain.
The email step's sender picker lists the sandbox sender with its tag.
Switching a step from its own sender to the sandbox sender asks first. After the confirm, the saved step reads from: {integrationId: <sandbox>} and an empty reply-to, and a test send from it reached SES.
With the flag on, saving a broadcast or a generic function step on the sandbox sender returns 400 with its message, and a workflow email step saves. With the flag off, all three save and the picker hides the sandbox sender.

Lane gate on the head:

Typecheck (pnpm --filter=@posthog/frontend typescript:check, on a Fleet box): no errors.
Jest: the email templater, CyclotronJob, lib/integrations, Broadcasts and workflow step suites: 907 passed. After the review fixes, the email templater and HogFlowFunctionConfiguration suites pass.
Oxfmt and Oxlint on the changed files: no errors. Pre-push hogli ci:preflight --strict: 0 failures.
CI: not run. Fork CI cannot run because the fork lacks the GitHub App secret.

Test seams:

emailTemplaterLogic (kea logic with a mocked integrations API): which senders a surface lists, flag on and off, and what chooseSenders saves.
selectSenders (pure): the rotation rules for the sandbox sender.
NativeEmailIntegrationChoice and EmailSenderSummary (rendered): what the picker and the transactional summary show.

Test rationale:

emailTemplaterLogic.test.ts "sender picker": the sandbox sender is listed only on a flagged workflow email step; a saved one stays listed after the flag turns off and drops out once replaced; picking it clears the custom sender and Reply-To; Reply-To is hidden while it is selected. Each failed before the change. No existing test covered the sender list in this logic.
selectSenders.test.ts: picking the sandbox sender over a rotation, adding an own sender after it, the rotation limit. Carried from feat(workflows): offer the sandbox sender in workflow email steps #450.
EmailTemplater.test.tsx: the picker offers what the logic lists and shows the members-only note and no "Custom sender" while the sandbox sender is selected. Replaces the layer below's in-component filter test, because the filter moved into the logic.
HogFlowFunctionConfiguration.test.ts allowsSandboxSender: a workflow email step allows the sandbox sender; a broadcast email step, a generic function step and a trigger do not. It failed before the review fix, when eligibility read the template id.
EmailTemplater.test.tsx also checks that a pick in the picker reaches chooseSenders, with and without rotation. It fails when the picker's onChange is disconnected.
EmailSenderSummary.test.tsx: a transactional template sending from the sandbox sender reads as having no sender. It failed before the change. Carried from feat(workflows): offer the sandbox sender in workflow email steps #450.

Proof (fleet proof gate on ae5de13605a: all owed proofs pass except ci):

UI walk on a seeded preview with the flag on, captured at 3e0abcbc166. ae5de13605a only makes the action type a required typed prop, so it reuses this evidence.
- Channels has provisioned the sandbox sender:
- The workflow email step lists the own sender, then the sandbox sender with its "Sandbox" tag:
- With the sandbox sender selected, the members-only note shows. Reply-To and "Custom sender" are gone:

Live run: picking the sandbox sender auto-saved the workflow (PATCH /hog_flows/<id>/ returned 200), and the stored step reads from: {"integrationId": <sandbox sender>}. The save accepts it for a workflow email step.
Prod shape: gap until read-only production access arrives on 2026-11-02, accepted by the standing rule.
CI: gap. Fork CI cannot run, because the fork lacks the GitHub App secret.

What the toolbar ships to customer pages, measured from the esbuild output (minified, post-tree-shake). The eager set is the entry plus everything statically imported from it — fetched before any feature runs; deferred chunks load lazily. The eager guardrail is 5.72 MiB. Each output file must also stay below 10 MB, where CloudFront stops compressing it. The module boundary is enforced separately by check-toolbar-graph.
