Problem

Stack

  • Slice V5 of the sandbox sender rollout: a team with a verified own sender switches its workflow off the sandbox sender. Slice order: feat(workflows): offer a switch from the sandbox sender #625.
  • Base: workflows-sandbox-first-run/insert-wait (feat(workflows): give an inserted email step the sandbox sender #623). Lands after slice V4, whose top is feat(workflows): give an inserted email step the sandbox sender #623.
  • Production lines: 317 (tests, stories, generated types, migrations and docs excluded).
  • Rebuilt on 2026-10-28 on the current master, in the new slice order. No change to its own lines.
  • Lane gate on ca428c7f5eb: frontend typecheck has no errors in the stack's files (the remaining errors also occur on master), oxlint and oxfmt clean, touched Jest suites 15 passed. Review: GPT-6.1 Sol through a delegated review of the restack (each PR's diff, its conflict resolutions, the slice seams and the save gate), no findings.
  • Proof on b46eef5521e, 2026-10-28: live run and UI walk below. Proof gate: fails only on the fork-only ci gap (exit 3); every other check passes.

Impact

Pays into Workflows activation through the sandbox funnel step: a team that verifies its domain moves its workflow to its own sender in one click, so the workflow reaches its audience.

  • The banner shows only with workflows-sandbox-sender on, a step on the sandbox sender and a verified own sender.
  • It writes a workflow only on click, as a draft change through the editor's own save path; an active workflow keeps sending until someone publishes.

Changes

  • With workflows-sandbox-sender on, a workflow with an email step on the sandbox sender shows a banner when the project has a verified own sender: "Your project has a verified email sender. This workflow still sends from the sandbox sender, which delivers only to verified members of your organization."
  • One verified own sender: the button reads "Switch to ". Several: "Switch sender" opens a menu of them.
  • The switch moves every email step on the sandbox sender to the chosen sender, as an unsaved change that auto-save stores as a draft. Steps on other senders keep theirs.
  • A toast confirms the count. For an active workflow it adds "Publish the changes to use this sender."
  • The button is disabled for viewers and while the workflow syncs.
  • Two events: workflows sandbox switch banner shown (once per workflow view) and workflows sandbox sender switched with email_step_count.
  • The banner sits in the workflow scene with the other workflow banners. With the flag off, or no verified own sender, nothing shows.

Production lines (tests, stories and inline kea typegen excluded): 317, from git diff --numstat against #623.

How did you test this code?

Live run on the slice tip

  • Live run and UI walk of b46eef5521e on a PostHog preview, a project with the sandbox sender and one verified own sender. Stubs: a local SES endpoint that records each call, and example.com seeded as a valid MX domain.
  • A draft workflow with two email steps on the sandbox sender shows the banner and "Switch to team@own.example.com". The click updates both steps (toast "Updated 2 email steps to team@own.example.com."), auto-save stores them, and the workflow stays a draft. A project with only the sandbox sender shows no banner.
  • Not shown live: the banner with the flag off. The preview's persisted flags did not refresh within 100 seconds; the Jest cases cover it.

Lane gate on the head:

  • Typecheck (pnpm --filter=@posthog/frontend typescript:check, on a Fleet box): no errors.
  • Jest: workflowSandboxSwitchBannerLogic, workflowSceneLogic and WorkflowSceneHeader, 19 passed.
  • Oxfmt and Oxlint on the changed files: no errors. Pre-push hogli ci:preflight --strict: 0 failures.
  • CI: not run. Fork CI cannot run because the fork lacks the GitHub App secret.

Test seams:

  • workflowSandboxSwitchBannerLogic (kea logic on a real workflowLogic with mocked workflow and integrations APIs): when the banner shows, what the switch writes into the workflow, and when it refuses.

Test rationale:

  • workflowSandboxSwitchBannerLogic.test.ts (new, with the logic): banner visibility for each missing condition (no verified own sender, no sandbox step, flag off); the shown event fires once, also when the flag lands late; the switch rewrites only sandbox steps and keeps the rest of the step; the switch reaching the save request through auto-save, with stage_draft only for an active workflow, and the toast for each; picking one of several senders; no switch during an external edit, for a viewer, or to an ineligible sender. Each failed before the change, because the logic did not exist. No existing test covers this banner.

Proof (recorded with fleet proof on the head):

  • UI walk on a seeded local preview, flag on, a draft workflow with one email step on the sandbox sender, one verified own sender:

  • Live run on the same preview: the click showed "Updated 1 email step to hello@acme.example.com.", auto-save sent a PATCH that answered 200 with the step on the own sender, and the stored workflow kept that sender and stayed a draft.

  • The head changes only a test and an internal doc, so both reuse the evidence from 282568a6cee.

  • Prod shape: gap, accepted until read-only production access arrives. The change is frontend-only behind the flag.

  • CI: gap, fork CI cannot run (see above).

Reviews (GPT-6.1 Sol, high):

  • Round 1 on 282568a6cee, two findings, both fixed in e63cf5bd0d7:
    • No test proved the switch is saved. The switch test now runs through auto-save and checks the PATCH body.
    • No docs update. Added to the internal sandbox sender doc.
  • Final read on e63cf5bd0d7: no findings.
  • Design pass before opening: no findings.

Release status

  • This change is behind a feature flag and is not available to users

Docs update

docs/internal/workflows-email-sending-tiers.md, under "Sandbox sender provisioning": the banner, the one-click switch, and that an active workflow keeps the sandbox sender until someone publishes.

What the toolbar ships to customer pages, measured from the esbuild output (minified, post-tree-shake). The eager set is the entry plus everything statically imported from it — fetched before any feature runs; deferred chunks load lazily. The eager guardrail is 5.72 MiB. Each output file must also stay below 10 MB, where CloudFront stops compressing it. The module boundary is enforced separately by check-toolbar-graph.

feat(workflows): offer a switch from the sandbox sender
a6dbd35 
A workflow whose email steps use the sandbox sender shows a banner once
the project has a verified own sender. The banner switches every sandbox
email step to that sender as an unsaved change, behind the
workflows-sandbox-sender flag.
