Why / What / How

Why. The Discord bot could only ping users who were @mentioned in the message that triggered it. Anyone else it named, including the person asking and people it looked up, came out as plain @Name text: formatted like a mention, pinging nobody. Posts the bot makes on its own (channel posts, new threads) could not ping at all, because that send path never resolved mentions and the client-level AllowedMentions.none() applied.

What. The bot may now @mention any member of the server it is posting in, by display name or username, and any role in that server. @everyone and @here stay off: they are never looked up, the default role is never allowlisted, and every send carries AllowedMentions(everyone=False), so a raw @everyone in model output stays plain text and Discord would refuse it anyway. Proactive posts and thread creation go through the same resolver. Inbound <@&role> mentions are shown to the model as @RoleName, matching what already happened for users.

How. Resolution happens at send time from the names the bot actually used. _mentionables_for takes each distinct @Word in the outgoing text and runs a gateway member query for that prefix (guild.query_members, which needs no privileged intent and works on any server), then lets the shared word-bounded resolver match display names and usernames exactly. Roles come from the cached guild roles and are matched by name first, so a role name never triggers a member query. The author and inbound mentions remain on the list as before. Lookups are capped at 8 names per message and 20 matches each; a failed or timed-out query is logged and skipped, never blocking the send.

Roles ride the existing platform-neutral (name, id) allowlist with a role: prefix on the id, so text.resolve_mentions and every other adapter are untouched; the Discord resolver emits <@&id> for those and lists them as roles in the ping object. Ambiguous names (two members sharing a display name) stay plain text, as before.

No intents, settings or environment changes. Slack is not changed here; the same policy there needs the usergroups:read scope and a separate look.

Changes 🏗️

  • copilot/bot/adapters/discord/adapter.py: send-time member and role lookup (_mentionables_for, _mention_queries), role mention markup and ping object, mentions resolved on chunked sends, inbound role mentions rendered readable
  • adapter_test.py: members and roles resolve and @everyone does not; DM keeps only known users; a failed member query still yields roles; candidate extraction strips punctuation and skips @everyone; role markup and ping object; @everyone stays plain when not allowlisted; inbound role mentions become readable

No API surface change, no configuration changes, no data/*.py changes.

Checklist 📋

For code changes:

  • I have clearly listed my changes in the PR description
  • I have made a test plan
  • I have tested my changes according to the test plan:
    • Discord adapter suite plus shared text_test.py: 181 passed, 0 failed (test VM backend container, tree synced)
    • pyright: 0 errors on adapter.py
    • black, isort, ruff clean on both files
    • On dev: ask the bot to page a member by display name and a role by name, confirm both ping; confirm @everyone in a reply does not

For configuration changes:

  • .env.default is updated or already compatible with my changes
  • docker-compose.yml is updated or already compatible with my changes
  • I have included a list of my configuration changes in the PR description (under Changes)

Walkthrough

The Discord adapter now supports role mentions, resolves send-time guild members and roles, excludes @everyone, and applies restricted mention allowlists to messages and chunks. Tests cover role rendering, guild queries, direct messages, failures, and mention parsing.

Changes

Discord mention handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
User and role mention contracts
autogpt_platform/backend/backend/copilot/bot/adapters/discord/adapter.py, autogpt_platform/backend/backend/copilot/bot/adapters/discord/adapter_test.py, autogpt_platform/backend/backend/copilot/bot/adapters/base.py
The adapter separates user and role IDs, renders role mention markup, and converts inbound role tokens to readable names. The message context documentation describes author inclusion, adapter-side widening, and plain-text fallback.
Send-time guild allowlist
autogpt_platform/backend/backend/copilot/bot/adapters/discord/adapter.py, autogpt_platform/backend/backend/copilot/bot/adapters/discord/adapter_test.py
The adapter adds non-default roles and queried guild members to outbound allowlists. It caps queries, skips bots, handles query failures, and applies the allowlist to normal and chunked sends.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c5d6d

Discord messages can now mention matching server members and roles based on generated text, which may cause unintended notifications. This behavior needs explicit acceptance or a tighter authorization boundary before merge.

739-740: 🩺 Stability & Availability

No additional Gateway rate limiter is required here.

discord.py 2.6.4 routes Guild.query_members through its shared GatewayRatelimiter, which enforces the 120-events-per-60-seconds limit per connection. The eight-query cap does not bypass this limiter, so 128 calls do not establish a Gateway-overrun failure.
