Authentication values currently reach debug logs through CookieJar output, video-session refresh messages, notification URLs and answer-provider token suffixes. This change redacts configured secrets, authentication fields, complete cookie headers, nested credential containers and exception messages before console/file output, and sanitizes notification text.

It also adds a public-file check and synthetic regression tests to keep credentials and private development material out of future contributions. The check is a prevention layer, not a guarantee that arbitrary free text contains no personal information.

Validation: Python 3.13, 23 offline tests passed; canary checks cover both log sinks, exceptions, nested/multiline containers and cookie headers. Gitleaks found no secrets in the new commit. Based directly on current upstream main; no fork development history is included.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security & Privacy

    • Sensitive values, credentials, cookies, and personal information are now redacted from logs and error messages.
    • Logs no longer expose session cookies, refreshed tokens, notification URLs, or chat IDs.
  • Quality & Safety

    • Added automated checks for privacy redaction and to flag private records or credential-like values in publishable files.
    • Added an automated workflow to run tests and publication checks on pushes, pull requests, and manual runs.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes add shared secret registration and redaction for logs, notifications, and exception output. They also add a publication audit for tracked files, regression tests, repository ignore rules, and a GitHub Actions workflow that runs the tests and audit.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0ca4d

This change adds redaction and a publication audit, but credentials can still be exposed in several cases. Basic Authorization credentials can remain in logs or notifications. Some provider API keys are not registered for redaction. The audit can pass a committed private-key file. Fix these gaps before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0ca4d

The changes reduce several existing disclosure paths, but credential redaction and publication checks remain incomplete. The remaining exposures were already possible before this PR; no increased exposure was established for them. The new CI workflow’s effective token permissions also remain unknown.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Residual runtime disclosure affects credentials present in one application process and content emitted to its console, rotating log file or enabled notification destination. The inspected changes do not establish new destinations, tenant reachability or increased credential privileges.
  • inferred — The publication-check bypass concerns tracked repository files. If an actual private key were contributed and published, exposure would extend to whatever authority that key grants; no such key or downstream authority was identified in this review.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained provider-field finding remains supported: go_authorization and siliconflow_key are consumed by active providers but are not registered by the field vocabulary. An unlabeled credential echoed in an external response can survive into existing response logs. Bearer formatting or independent registration can redact particular values. Those response-log paths already existed without redaction at the base, so increased exposure was not established.
  • observed — The retained Basic-authentication finding remains supported: for an unquoted Authorization header, the assignment rule can replace the Basic scheme while leaving the encoded credential. Separate registration or other matching rules may protect a particular value. Error notifications already forwarded unsanitized exception and traceback content to the same notification boundary at the base; this residual exposure was not introduced by the PR.
  • observed — The retained publication finding remains supported: a regular signing.pem file matches neither a rejected filename rule nor the content-scan suffix allowlist, so the audit can report success despite private-key content. The ignore additions do not cover that filename. The base had no publication audit, making this an incomplete new prevention layer rather than an established increase in publication exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — External response text and exception content still reach output callers, but now pass through a best-effort registration and pattern-based control. This control covers registered values, recognized nested credential fields, cookies, bearer credentials and URL paths or queries; it is not a universal confidentiality guarantee for arbitrary text.
  • observed — The new workflow executes dependency installation and repository tests without an explicit permissions block. It uses pull_request rather than pull_request_target and contains no explicit secret injection. Effective token permissions depend on unavailable repository or organization defaults, so the deferred authority candidate remains unresolved rather than a verified excessive-privilege finding.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Centralization gives both log sinks and notifications a common policy, but correctness depends on credential producers registering their actual field names before emission. Snapshot locking does not make configuration publication and registration atomic, and the growing registry has no explicit reconfiguration cleanup contract. The evidence does not establish a multi-tenant application or a concrete failure exploiting these limits.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Register the actual provider credential fields and redact complete authentication-header values, including Basic credentials. If concurrent reconfiguration is supported, complete registration before publishing configuration and define registry ownership through reconfiguration and shutdown.
  • proposed — Extend credential inspection beyond the current suffix allowlist to cover private-key files, and keep publication-check success explicitly bounded to the rules actually enforced.
  • proposed — Make workflow token permissions explicit at the least privilege required, and disable persisted checkout credentials if subsequent steps do not need them. Confirm the effective repository settings before resolving the deferred authority question.

Redact the complete unquoted Authorization value.

For Authorization: Basic dXNlcjpwYXNz, this pattern replaces only Basic. It leaves dXNlcjpwYXNz in the output because the unquoted branch excludes whitespace. (docs.python.org)

The Bearer rule does not cover this scheme. Secret registration also does not cover an unregistered, encoded credential. When this diagnostic reaches a log or NotificationService.send, readers receive the credential.

Add complete Authorization and Proxy-Authorization header handling before the generic assignment rule. Add an unregistered Basic-header regression case.

Based on learnings, authentication fields must not reach logs in plaintext.

Register the credential names used by the providers.

register_config does not match go_authorization or siliconflow_key. These fields supply authentication credentials in api/answer.py, Line 771 and Line 1469.

If a provider echoes either credential in an unlabeled error response, redact leaves it unchanged. The response-log paths at Line 674 and Line 1523 can then expose it to log readers. Add these configuration names to the secret-registration rules and test unlabeled diagnostic text. The logger patcher processes records before the sinks receive them. (loguru.readthedocs.io)

Based on learnings, configured credentials must not reach logs in plaintext.

Scan credential-bearing files outside this suffix list.

A tracked signing.pem containing -----BEGIN PRIVATE KEY----- passes the filename checks but receives no content inspection. The audit then reports success. If the file enters the public repository, anyone can recover the private key.

Extend credential scanning to .pem, .key, .txt, and .env.example, or inspect all eligible text files. Add synthetic regression cases for these paths. These cases contain recognizable credentials, not arbitrary personal information.
