Author Edit Profile X Connect Button- #4449 - #1264
This PR sets up connecting X to a user's profile through the Edit Profile modal. It works like ORCID, where manual entry is no longer allowed, and properly sets up and syncs the account if the account is not currently linked to another.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
You can connect your X account from your profile settings. Connected X and ORCID fields are displayed as read-only.
A confirmation appears after connecting X, and your profile displays an X link only when the account is connected.
Bug Fixes
Sign-in returns you to a safe destination and removes the connection status from the URL.
X connection errors are surfaced during sign-in.
Updates
Social labels and icons now use “X” instead of “Twitter,” including in profile and sharing contexts.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Walkthrough
The profile flow now supports X account connection. Author profile data records X connection state, the OAuth callback uses the current session token, and profile and sign-in pages handle connection status and callback URLs.
Changes: X Account Connection
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Connection state and OAuth authentication types/authorProfile.ts, services/auth.service.ts, app/api/auth/[...nextauth]/auth.config.ts
Author profiles map the X connection state. AuthService.authenticateWithX accepts an optional auth token, and the X OAuth callback passes the current session token.
Profile connection controls and social links components/profile/About/ProfileInformationForm/index.tsx, components/profile/ProfileSocialLinks.tsx, components/ui/AuthorTooltip.tsx, app/about/components/data/team.ts, app/privacy/page.tsx, components/landing/LandingPageFooter.tsx
The profile form offers X connection when disconnected and disables the X field when connected. Social link displays use the connection state. Related labels now use “X” instead of “Twitter.”
OAuth return and callback handling app/auth/signin/page.tsx, hooks/useXConnectCallback.ts, app/author/[id]/page.tsx
The sign-in page sanitizes callback URLs and handles X authentication errors. The author page handles x_connected=true, shows a success toast, and removes the parameter from the URL.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 1ec30
The X connection flow is mergeable with no actionable issues identified in the reviewed changes.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 1ec30
Connecting X now uses whichever application account is signed in when authorization finishes. Return navigation is safer, but continuity with the initiating account and handling of conflicting or repeated connections remain insufficiently established.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The shared X provider derives linking authority from the session present at callback time, without binding that authority to an explicit connection intent or initiating account. Ordinary X sign-in reaches the same path. An application-account change during OAuth changes the token sent to the backend; session loss removes it entirely. This creates an inferred account-linking ambiguity, although an incorrect link depends on backend behavior that is not available. OAuth state and PKCE checks protect the OAuth transaction but do not establish application-account continuity.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The changed flow sends an application authentication token together with X OAuth credentials to the authentication API. The directly affected assets are the application's account session and the association between an author profile and an X identity.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A browser that starts X authorization under one application account and completes it after switching accounts supplies the later account's token. If the backend treats that token as the link owner, the connection can target an account other than the initiator. This requires a session change within a valid OAuth transaction; the inspected evidence does not establish remote account takeover or bypass of backend ownership checks.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The provider rejects callback errors, missing code, mismatched or missing state, and a missing PKCE verifier. The changed sign-in page resolves callback URLs, permits navigation only to the current origin, and removes the connection marker. Authentication errors are rendered as React text. These controls counter unrelated-callback, external-navigation, and direct HTML-injection concerns on the inspected path.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Authenticated connection failures remove the success marker before returning to the callback destination. If the session is unavailable, that special recovery branch does not run. The frontend shows separate exchange and user-fetch steps, but available evidence does not establish backend atomicity, unique ownership under concurrency, retry safety, or recovery after a committed link followed by a later failure.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Distinguish login from connection intent in a server-validated OAuth transaction, bind connection intent to the initiating application account, and reject or require confirmation when that session changes or disappears. Establish the backend contract for unique ownership, atomic linking, and safe repetition before relying on those guarantees.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names an author-facing feature, the X connect button in the Edit Profile flow. The changeset matches it: a new X connect button in ProfileInformationForm, a renamed authenticateWithX call, and an X connection callback hook. The title does not name the wider X label renames or the privacy-page wording, which is acceptable for a title. The title refers to a ticket number, #4449, while the PR objectives cite #1264. The title itself is clear and specific.
