Draft for review of the indexed implementation, published evidence and limited qualification scope. Runtime qualification remains default-closed; this Draft does not request qualification activation.
Add FP32/BF16 indexed AdaLN forward/backward for two per-sample modulation banks, preserving the select01 fallback outside the dedicated NVIDIA domain. This PR targets test-qwenimage, following the shared AdaLN work in #559, which remains open. Until the parent lands, this comparison includes the shared parent changes. Target base and merge-base are 16b81175874ecf11d5ff05c00de3b69e9457591b; the GPU-tested source is 5490223a850fe9cb1efd5c3cceeb0fb964ee5c1c. Current PR head f23b389 adds only CI-pinned Black/isort formatting and import order to that source; no rebase was made. The evidence Release remains pinned to the tested source.
registry → AdaLN dispatch
shared → CUDA | Triton | fixed-order PyTorch
indexed → CUDA | NVIDIA Triton
H: padded lower/upper FP32 tree
bank gradients: ascending selected-token FP32 folds
ordinary unsupported input → explicit select01 fallback
strict → explicit backend/target/runtime qualification; default closed
accuracy → independent CPU FP32 gold + separate fixed-byte reference
Gate preserves original dtype bits. Absent upstreams remain distinct from explicit zeros; empty-bank gradients start at +0. The implementation retains domain checks before copies/allocations and does not introduce higher-order gradient guarantees.
Evidence
Before: The fixed integration base 16b81175874ecf11d5ff05c00de3b69e9457591b lacks this AdaLN implementation. On the shared parent, indexed calls use framework select01 and strict rejects them. This is a source comparison, not a claimed pre-change GPU failure run. After: GPU-tested commit 5490223a850fe9cb1efd5c3cceeb0fb964ee5c1c has retained H100 NVL/SM90 evidence: 720 correctness node calls across 9 suites and 1,408 sanitizer node calls across 8 suites; all setup/call/teardown reports pass, with zero skips/xfails and zero reported tool errors/hazards/warnings. Counts include CPU policy/boundary checks. Coverage includes independent output/VJP accuracy, fixed bytes, routing/views/upstream semantics, large offsets, H3072 workloads, shared regression and explicit L3 activation. Sanitizers use the locked subsets, not every correctness configuration.
Identity: Python 3.11.17, Torch 2.12.1+cu126, CUDA 12.6, Triton 3.7.1, driver 595.91.07; native nvcc 12.6.85 and Triton bundled ptxas 12.8.93. One fresh AdaLN-only production-source extension is reused after identity checks; loaded binary SHA256 is 84fb3e60630979a7d51a5a877b306b5353e82c5bc3d5e29ca3dea8a984f1da00. This does not establish full-extension build/link acceptance.
18 cases / 216 cells / 2,592 formal samples, one successful process, 3 warmups / 12 repeats, seed 386 and eps 7. Each cell uses all six backend orders twice. Same logical inputs/upstreams; candidates use CPU FP32 gold plus fixed bytes, select01 uses independent CPU FP64 accuracy. Direct forward/backward-only/forward+backward and resolved dispatch forward+backward are separate production surfaces. Wall is primary; CUDA event is auxiliary; validation/copies/allocations/autograd remain included.

All measured warm cell wall/event medians favor the candidates; individual samples and memory do not universally improve. Small BF16 contiguous Triton forward has a 0.855 ms sample versus same-round baseline 0.696 ms, with approximately 47% sample CV. FP32 strided backward-only increases incremental allocated peak from 807.068 to 1,211.168 MiB at S6889, and from 2,048 to 3,072 bytes in the small case. First Triton forward/backward takes 1,245.969/1,133.622 ms including JIT. Later cases can reuse specializations. Peak-minus-baseline is not scratch-only or complete training peak memory.
No preset speedup threshold, inter-process stability, kernel-only, full route/layout cross-product, dispatch-only forward/backward, resolver timing or model-level gain is claimed. Dispatch and direct run in separate phases; their median difference is not an isolated overhead estimate.
Limited qualification evidence review:Arithmetic paths and sanitizer coverage support the fixed H100 NVL environment, AdaLN-only build and tested scope. Actual Triton PTX targets sm_90a; sqrt/div SASS has range checks, rescaling and correction sequences. Fold data accumulators use FP32 FADD; half-family constant-materialization instructions do not demonstrate fused dscale accumulation. Existing rounding/subnormal literals pass. Tool coverage is the locked subset, not all launches/shapes; full-extension builds and other compiler/runtime targets are outside acceptance. No necessary new GPU test was identified. This evidence review does not activate qualification; indexed strict remains default-closed.
Public evidence:Fixed-head evidence Release, original review archive, checksum, reviewer guide, summary, all per-case tables and cell CSV. Archive: 25,449,592 bytes, SHA256 4b80f0fd07a2a916174257a22c2aac8578cc4e5614df01516ddb65857fb96439; candidate SHA256 a2e283df495aef6154d194fbc5c52a23946817e1663a06ceb094e5209ff6fbeb. The guide pins verifier source 56b0163db8d4473273aa22109f1a3dcdfcdf481f and its SHA256. Original indexed harness/source archive, reports and compiled artifacts are in the review archive. These enable reading and CPU evidence verification; no one-click GPU rerun from an ordinary operator checkout is promised.
Execution source is the retained candidate-source snapshot. Subsequent ignored storage/extraction changes and the separately recorded storage recovery controller do not change operator arithmetic or the benchmark worker. The accepted sample set is one complete attempt; failed-attempt samples are not combined with it. The review bundle excludes oracle tensor payloads and full backups; no offline tensor-level recomputation is claimed.
Local preparation: existing isolated CPU preflight 198 passed / 5 deselected; this audit reuses it. Raw/report and phase/identity checks, DCO signoffs and strict MkDocs build pass. The later formatting commit f23b389 addresses CI linting: Black 24.4.2 and isort 5.13.2 checks pass on all 10 changed files; flake8 7.0.0 passes on the Python files, and git diff --check passes. ASTs are identical except for import ordering in four files; normalized ASTs match the tested source for all 10. Focused CPU checks after formatting: 170 passed, with GPU cases excluded; remote CI for this head is pending. No new GPU run was performed. Fixed operator source and contract are available.
Merge Danger
Door: two-way
Reverting removes the operator/backend additions; no persisted data migration is involved.
Blast Radius: operators
Adds native symbols and AdaLN runtime/validation paths, including the shared parent changes. Valid unsupported indexed inputs retain explicit ordinary fallback; strict rejects unqualified execution. Successful-forward trace metadata is not backward, profiler or binary-attestation evidence. Evidence is linked above. Qualification evidence acceptance is limited to the disclosed target/build/matrix; no runtime scope is installed or enabled by this PR.

For BF16 inputs, 1.0f + scale is computed in FP32 after widening scale, but the reference (_AdaLNReference.forward in rl_engine/reference/norm/adaln_modulation.py:92-94, and the Triton _fwd at adaln_modulation.py:53-55) does the same FP32 1.0 + scale computation, so this part matches. However tests/helpers/adaln_indexed.pycheck_bf16_rounding only exercises the indexed path; please confirm the non-indexed BF16 path is byte-compared against the reference, since the BF16 rounding-order contract (y[1] = 3/1024) is a declared behavior. This is a coverage gap in verification, not a proven kernel defect.

index here is guaranteed contiguous int32 by the preceding check, so the boolean comparison is cheap; but note .item<bool>() performs a device->host synchronization on every forward and backward call. The backward path re-runs this validation although index was already validated in forward and comes from saved tensors. Since bank is used to subscript fixed-size arrays ds[2]/dc[2]/dgate[2] in indexed_backward_reduce_kernel, the check is safety-critical and should stay, but consider validating only in forward (and documenting that backward trusts the saved, already-validated index) to avoid the extra sync in the hot backward path.

When dy is None (loss depends only on gate), ps/pc stay None and HAS_Y=False, but _fold still writes shift and scale (both zero) into dm. The declared indexed contract (see rl_engine/reference/norm/adaln_indexed.py::_IndexedFixed.backward, which zero-initializes dm and only skips the dy accumulation) does produce zeros here, so this matches the reference — but only because the gate-only case is intentionally zero. Note it so it is not "fixed" later: the HAS_Y guard must cover every PS/PC load, and dm[:, :2H] must remain zeros rather than uninitialized torch.empty_like contents. Since torch.empty_like is used, verify _fold unconditionally stores all three slices for both banks (it does), otherwise stale memory leaks into dm.

S is a tl.constexpr in _fold, so for token in range(S) is statically unrolled over every token. With real Qwen-Image shapes (S of 4096/6889 as exercised by test_adaln_real_image_shapes_forward_backward) this produces thousands of unrolled iterations plus per-iteration tl.load, tl.full and conditionals, causing very long JIT compile times and large kernels. The plain-path _bwd_reduce has the same pattern. Use tl.range(S) (or tl.max_contiguous/dynamic loop bounds passed as non-constexpr args) to keep a runtime loop while preserving ascending-token order.

The indexed branch relies solely on _indexed_domain_reason (which checks int32 span, B <= 65535, H <= 4096, FP32 eps and NVIDIA CUDA) rather than the explicit guards used in the non-indexed branch. That is equivalent today, but it duplicates the policy in a different form: the non-indexed branch uses x.numel() for the int32 check whereas _indexed_domain_reason uses span-aware _int32_addressable, and it checks x.shape[-1] > 4096 before the less-informative numel check. The two branches can drift. Consider routing both through the same helper (as the indexed path already does) to keep error types/messages consistent with AdaLNDispatch, which string-compares these reasons.
⚠️ GitHub could not post this as an inline comment: Routed to summary (severity low · category maintainability)
indexed_available = True is hard-coded, so the Triton backend always advertises indexed support even on ROCm/CPU-only hosts where x.is_cuda or torch.version.hip checks make indexed execution impossible. AdaLNDispatch gates on this flag before checking reason is None, but the flag itself gives a misleading capability signal and would let a strict caller pass the indexed symbols unavailable check and then fail on the domain check with a different message. Compute it from the actual runtime capability or document why Triton's indexed support is unconditional.
⚠️ GitHub could not post this as an inline comment: Routed to summary (severity medium · category bug)
dm is allocated as CPU float32 regardless of the input device, and torch.zeros is never moved to match. This is fine only because IndexedAdaLNFixedReference restricts to CPU, but if the class is ever reused with CUDA tensors the returned gradient will land on the wrong device. More importantly, the accumulation loop indexes with index[b if index.shape[0] > 1 else 0, s] while forward uses index.long() broadcast over torch.arange(batch)[:, None]; for a [1, S] index the forward broadcast and this b-vs-0 heuristic must be kept in lockstep. Prefer deriving the bank directly from the same broadcasted index tensor used in forward and allocate dm with device=..., dtype=torch.float32 tied to modulation.
⚠️ GitHub could not post this as an inline comment: Routed to summary (severity medium · category performance)
Double Python loop over batch × seq doing tensor slicing per element is O(B*S) host-side dispatches in backward, making reference-based tests very slow for realistic shapes (appearing hung). Prefer a vectorized scatter-based reduction (e.g. index_add_/scatter_add_ on the flattened layout) that preserves the same ascending-token accumulation order.
⚠️ GitHub could not post this as an inline comment: Routed to summary (severity medium · category maintainability)
The indexed reference does not apply _eps_supported_fp32, whereas the dense reference rejects eps that is non-finite or underflows in FP32. This lets the two references disagree on boundary eps (e.g. denormal/underflowing eps) even though the runtime contract enforces FP32-representable eps; a byte test could then compare two "references" that are not equivalent. Reuse the same eps validation here.
⚠️ GitHub could not post this as an inline comment: Routed to summary (severity medium · category bug)
In the dense path the gate is returned as modulation[:, None, 2*H:] explicitly to "preserve its original BF16 payload bits", but the select01 path upcasts to float and then .to(modulation.dtype), and selects via gate[batch:, None, :]. If the select01 profile is also expected to be bit-exact for the gate output, this round-trip may not preserve raw BF16 payloads. Confirm the select01 gate contract; if bit preservation is required, select on the original dtype tensor instead of the float upcast.
⚠️ GitHub could not post this as an inline comment: Routed to summary (severity low · category maintainability)
_int32_addressable and _indexed_domain_reason encode runtime device-domain policy (int32 addressing, B/H limits, NVIDIA-only, eps representability) but live in the reference module and are unused by the CPU reference class. This blurs the reference/runtime boundary and risks the reference module becoming the authority for device-domain checks. Consider moving these helpers to the runtime/policy layer (e.g. rl_engine/runtime/adaln.py) if that is the owning layer.

Follow-up on the OCR summary, checked against f23b389fdad223b376688377ba9942dc42bf2a0e. Four findings contain premises contradicted by the current source:
Benchmark gate materialization / comparability. This script benchmarks shared AdaLN; it does not pass modulate_index, so the shared implementations and baseline return the same [B,1,H] gate shape. Different autograd graphs are part of this whole-operator comparison, not by themselves evidence of non-equivalent semantics. Also, the script creates B=1 inputs. For that layout, the baseline gate slice is already contiguous: a small CPU layout check confirms gate.contiguous() is gate. The suggested .contiguous() therefore does not materialize a new tensor. Adding a forced copy would change the baseline workload.
Indexed dgate arithmetic. The documented indexed contract explicitly starts dshift/dscale/dgate at FP32 +0, folds selected tokens in ascending order, and casts at the output boundary. The fixed CPU reference uses the same FP32 dgate fold, matching the CUDA implementation. Forward gate payload copying is distinct from backward gate-gradient accumulation; even S=1 is a +0-initialized addition, not a payload-copy promise. No wider-dtype reference or undocumented order mismatch was found.
Fast-math omission and acceptance coverage. The omission is already documented explicitly. The cited real-image-shape test also requires the selected backend to be CUDA when RL_KERNEL_REQUIRE_EXT=1, so that test cannot silently accept Triton under the required-extension setting. A build warning could be a separate usability improvement, but the claims of missing documentation and this test accepting fallback are incorrect.
Build-test negative assertions. The existing parameterized test checks both source membership and define membership using (...) is enabled. The enabled=False cases already assert that both are absent. monkeypatch.setenv is restored by pytest after the test. An extra assertion tying source inclusion to the nvcc fast-math flags could strengthen coverage, but it is separate from the reported missing negative assertions.
The shared benchmark, fast-math documentation/build gating, and these build assertions are inherited from #559. The indexed dgate contract is introduced here.
Follow-up on the remaining index-validation performance finding in the OCR summary: the repeated validation cost is real. In the current indexed CUDA path, Python forward validates route values, and the native forward and backward each run their own all().item() validation. These scans, temporary operations and host scalar reads are included in the whole-call timings.
I am retaining the native checks. The exported _C.adaln_indexed_forward and _C.adaln_indexed_backward entry points can be called directly, bypassing the Python wrapper; dropping their route-value checks would allow invalid indices to reach native pointer addressing. The backward entry point likewise cannot assume that every caller used the Python forward wrapper.
No measurement here establishes that these checks dominate launch latency, and the operator contract does not promise a synchronization-free public call. Avoiding repeated checks while preserving safe direct native entry points would need a separate interface/design decision and measured validation. This correctness patch does not remove the checks or claim a synchronization optimization.
Separately, fixes for the four actionable CodeRabbit findings are now committed and pushed in 05f8221, and their individual replies have been updated to reference that commit. The focused local suite was rerun including the HIP-identity helper correction: 70 passed / 42 skipped with GPUs hidden. CI-pinned Black 24.4.2 and isort 5.13.2 checks pass on all nine changed files; git diff --check passes. Real two-GPU validation and new H100 acceptance have not been run. Historical GPU evidence remains tied to its original tested source. #559 has not received these fixes yet, and no claim that all automated findings are resolved is intended.

The fixes are now committed and pushed in 05f8221. I edited the earlier thread replies to replace their local-only status with this commit, but am explicitly requesting a review so those edits are not mistaken for a review trigger.
Please re-evaluate the device guard, CUDA test availability, indexed qualification prerequisites, and per-case CLI backend/fallback reporting against the published code. B/S specialization and native route-value checks remain unchanged for the reasons documented in their threads.
Current local validation: 70 passed / 42 skipped with GPUs hidden; CI-pinned Black and isort checks pass. Real two-GPU validation and new H100 acceptance have not been run; historical GPU evidence remains pinned to its original source. #559 has not received these fixes yet.

Two further false-positive premises in the latest OCR summary, run 40718899066-1, checked against current head 359d274:
A gate-only backward's zero shift/scale contributions do not overwrite gradients from other consumers. The native function allocates and returns a new complete dm; it does not write into the leaf's existing .grad. Autograd combines this contribution with contributions from other consumers. set_materialize_grads(False) controls how absent output upstreams are passed into this custom backward; it does not require individual slices of a returned input-gradient tensor to be undefined.
With dy absent and dg present, shift/scale contributions are correctly zero and gate contributions remain meaningful. Returning undefined dm would discard those legitimate gate gradients. This is the declared indexed contract and matches the fixed reference, which initializes FP32 dm to zero, conditionally accumulates dy/dg contributions, and returns the full tensor. Missing ps/pc are passed as nullptr and guarded before reads; there is no uninitialized partial-buffer access in that case. Skipping writes into a newly allocated dm would instead leave parts of the returned gradient uninitialized.
The backward stub's list[torch.Tensor | None] matches undefined dx at this binding. In pinned Torch 2.12.1, the Tensor caster calls THPVariable_Wrap, which explicitly returns Python None for an undefined Tensor. Thus the dy-absent return is None, not an empty/garbage Python Tensor or an assumed conversion failure. The Python wrapper discards it consistently with that contract. The related high-severity conversion claim has been answered in its inline thread.
Follow-up on the shared Triton _bwd_reduce FTZ finding in the OCR summary:
Checked against Triton 3.7.1. enable_reflect_ftz controls libdevice reflection, not ordinary FP32 addition globally. This kernel has no libdevice calls.
An offline SM90a compilation comparison produced identical cubins with the flag enabled and disabled for the checked FP32/BF16 configurations. Both use FP32 FADD without FTZ.
I don't see a numerical defect here. The missing flag could be added for consistency, but it is not a required correctness fix.
Follow-up on the index-validation stream claim in the OCR summary:
I checked the generated ATen wrappers in Torch 2.12.1. The validation operations select the tensor's CUDA device and use its current stream, rather than unconditionally running on the default stream.
The .item() host synchronization is real, as noted in my earlier reply, but moving CUDAGuard before validation would not eliminate it. Removing native value checks would leave direct _C callers without validation.

The comment claims bit copying, but this is a floating-point load/store. For BF16, converting through the FP32 register path can canonicalize NaN payloads / signaling NaNs (and MTZ behaviour can alter subnormals), so raw bits are not preserved. test_indexed_bf16_raw16_gate -> check_bf16_gate_payload (tests/ops/norm/test_adaln_indexed.py:133-136) feeds 0x7F81 (signaling NaN) and expects raw16 equality; the Triton backend explicitly reinterprets through tl.uint16/uint32 pointers for this reason (rl_engine/backends/shared/triton/norm/adaln_indexed.py:62-67). Copy through integer words instead, e.g.:

_AdaLNTriton.backward dereferences grad_y.contiguous() (in the _bwd_rows launch) and grad_gate.contiguous() unconditionally. Unlike the indexed Triton/CUDA path, the shared path does not call ctx.set_materialize_grads(False), so this currently survives only because autograd materializes zeros for unused outputs — meaning dgate gradients get added even when gate is not part of the loss, and a full dX pass runs when only gate is used. Also, if this is ever made consistent with the indexed implementation (set_materialize_grads(False)), both .contiguous() calls need None guards, otherwise AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'contiguous'. Make the grad handling explicit (grad_y/grad_gate may be None) and align set_materialize_grads usage across all three backends.

The indexed reference never validates modulation shape/index range, unlike the dense reference (_validate/_validate_select01 enforce [2B, 3H] and index ∈ {0,1}). With modulation of shape [B, 3H] or an index value >= 2, modulation[rows] silently gathers the wrong bank or raises an opaque IndexError. Since this class is the byte-exactness oracle, a byte test could pass/fail for the wrong reason. Add explicit shape and index-range checks in forward (or in IndexedAdaLNFixedReference.__call__) mirroring _validate_select01_metadata.

Summary
Draft for review of the indexed implementation, published evidence and limited qualification scope. Runtime qualification remains default-closed; this Draft does not request qualification activation.
Add FP32/BF16 indexed AdaLN forward/backward for two per-sample modulation banks, preserving the select01 fallback outside the dedicated NVIDIA domain. This PR targets
test-qwenimage, following the shared AdaLN work in #559, which remains open. Until the parent lands, this comparison includes the shared parent changes. Target base and merge-base are16b81175874ecf11d5ff05c00de3b69e9457591b; the GPU-tested source is5490223a850fe9cb1efd5c3cceeb0fb964ee5c1c. Current PR headf23b389adds only CI-pinned Black/isort formatting and import order to that source; no rebase was made. The evidence Release remains pinned to the tested source.Gate preserves original dtype bits. Absent upstreams remain distinct from explicit zeros; empty-bank gradients start at +0. The implementation retains domain checks before copies/allocations and does not introduce higher-order gradient guarantees.
Evidence
16b81175874ecf11d5ff05c00de3b69e9457591blacks this AdaLN implementation. On the shared parent, indexed calls use framework select01 and strict rejects them. This is a source comparison, not a claimed pre-change GPU failure run. After: GPU-tested commit
