Ready for review. Closes #50 for CUDA; ROCm hardware validation is still open (see Limitations).

Summary

Adds opt-in persistent auto-tuning of Triton launch parameters to the HAL, as described in #50:

  1. rl_engine/platforms/autotuner.py profiles launch candidates on first use and caches the winner on disk. The cache key includes the device identity (UUID and PCI bus ID, driver, runtime and library versions), the source revision, the candidate set, input shape/dtype/stride, scalar arguments and phase. Writes are versioned JSON with a per-key lock and atomic replacement; unreadable or unwritable caches fall back to memory with a warning.
  2. rl_engine/backends/shared/triton/autotuning.py wires SiLU, SwiGLU, RoPE, embedding forward, RMSNorm forward/dx, ratio/KL and GRPO normalisation through the tuner (TunableKernel / pin_autotune).
  3. rl_engine/backends/shared/triton/tuned.py adds tuned GEMM, attention and logprob backends. They are selectable only by explicit backend ID via kernel_registry.get_op(..., backend="rlkernel.triton.tuned_gemm"), never through strict or default dispatch, and they do not claim batch invariance.

Tuning is disabled by default. With RL_KERNEL_AUTOTUNE unset or 0, every operator launches its existing fixed configuration.

Prior art & reuse decision

Triton 3.8's @triton.autotune(cache_results=True) already persists autotune results on disk. Its key covers the Triton version, compile target, kernel source, cache-relevant environment variables, the tuning key and the config list, and it chooses the fastest config by timing alone.

This PR does not build on it for three reasons:

  • Device identity. The issue asks for a cache keyed on the specific GPU (PCI ID). Triton keys on the architecture target, so two different GPUs of the same model share an entry.
  • Numerical safety. RL-Kernel's reduction kernels are batch-invariant: arithmetic order must not depend on the launch configuration. Triton's autotuner does not check outputs. Here the candidate set is restricted to configurations that keep arithmetic order fixed: reduction candidates vary only num_stages, with warp layout fixed after a warp-count change caused a later-input RMSNorm mismatch. Every candidate is qualified byte-for-byte against the fixed launch (see Tests).
  • CUDA graph capture. During capture the tuner never profiles or touches disk; it uses a warm in-memory selection or the fixed launch.

Behavior changes

  • No default-path change: dispatch, priorities, strict/fallback policy, arithmetic precision, reduction layout and K partition are unchanged.
  • KernelRegistry.get_op gains an optional keyword-only backend= for the three explicit tuned backends. An unknown or unavailable explicit backend raises rather than falling back.
  • tests/ops/gemm/test_det_gemm.py: the import guard caught any ImportError, and the test imports a ROCm reduce kernel under its old name (_det_gemm_tree_reduce_to_output_kernel, now ..._rocm_kernel), so every Triton GEMM case skipped as "Triton is unavailable". The import now uses the current name, and only a missing triton package skips. With _C built on B200, main reports 22 passed / 49 skipped for this file; this change reports 73 passed / 9 skipped (gfx942-only). No test is newly skipped.

Results (B200)

Full evidence, commands and raw data are in reports/experiments/issue50_b200/README.md. Two environments: A = PyTorch 2.14 / Triton 3.8 (native extension not built: PyTorch 2.14 headers need C++20, the extension builds with C++17), B = PyTorch 2.13 / Triton 3.7.1 with _C built from this tree.

Suite Env Passed Skipped Failed
tests/ops/gemm/test_det_gemm.py, RL_KERNEL_AUTOTUNE=0 B 73 9 0
tests/ops/gemm/test_det_gemm.py, RL_KERNEL_AUTOTUNE=1 B 73 9 0
tests/platforms/test_persistent_autotuner.py + tests/runtime/test_kernel_registry.py A 31 0 0
tests/ops/test_autotuning_gpu.py (operator, cache, graph regressions) A and B 60 2 0
tests/ops/test_autotuning_candidates.py (all candidates vs fixed launch, bytewise) A and B 402 27 0
tests/benchmarks/test_autotuning_benchmark.py A 18 0 0
  • Skips: the GEMM skips need ROCm gfx942. The others are dtypes the existing operators do not support; their original errors are asserted instead.

  • Candidate coverage: 24 CUDA-reachable kernels and 101 kernel/config pairs, all matching under both Triton versions.

  • Existing tests/ops vs main (env B, same _C, tuning off / on):

    This change main
    Tuning off 1577 passed / 377 skipped / 2 failed 1527 / 417 / 1
    Tuning on 1578 / 377 / 1 1526 / 417 / 2
    • 40 GEMM tests that skip on main now pass.
    • The five two-GPU cases (cross-device rejection, deterministic TP logprob, device-context restoration), run on two B200s: 4 passed and 1 skipped (TP=4 needs four GPUs), on both this change and main, tuning off and on. On four B200s the TP check passes for TP=2 and TP=4 on both trees.
    • The remaining failures also occur on main. test_rms_norm::test_registry_dispatches_rms_norm fails in every run. test_swiglu::test_autograd_wrapper_contiguity_and_gradient_routing is flaky: it is a CPU test with unseeded inputs, and failed 6/20 runs on main and 4/20 with this change.

Performance: 5 independent process groups, 52 BF16 operator/preset/phase cases. A benefit counts only when the ranges of process medians do not overlap.

Confirmed faster Tuned slower Overlapping
Eager wall time 0 24 28
CUDA graph device time 19 5 28
  • Graph replay: small SiLU/SwiGLU cases are 20–31% faster, small RoPE/embedding/ratio-KL/GRPO cases 4–9%, and GEMM/attention under 1%.
  • Eager: no case is faster. Tuned forward calls are typically 7–15 µs slower (attention forward about 30 µs) because per-call selection and dispatch cost exceeds the kernel gain.
  • Cache behaviour: cold processes select tuned, restarted processes load from disk, and hot selector calls are zero.

Auto-tuning is therefore mainly useful under CUDA graph capture, which is why it stays opt-in.

Re-run at head 54307e1b (B200, torch 2.13, 4 GPUs visible). All six PR commands pass with the same counts as the table above (73/9, 34, 60/2, 402/27, 18). tests/ops: head 2044 passed / 2 failed / 401 skipped (tuning off), 2045 / 1 / 401 (on); merge base 1532 / 1 / 412 and 1530 / 3 / 412. The failures are test_registry_dispatches_rms_norm (all runs, both trees) and the flaky CPU swiglu autograd test; nothing new at the head. Performance, 52 cases: 0 eager and 19 CUDA-graph cases with a confirmed benefit, as above. Raw data: pr_assets pr536/b200-gaps/.

Environment: NVIDIA B200, driver 580.126.20, CUDA 13.0; see the two environments above. Performance was measured in env A. python ci/run.py layout passes.

Scope / Known limitations

  • ROCm: not run on ROCm hardware, including the ROCm fused GEMM leaf. The tests are written to run unchanged on ROCm.
  • Performance with _C: performance was measured in env A only, as tuned vs fixed Triton launches.
  • Cache edge cases: a read-only cache directory, a failing os.replace (ENOSPC), a failing directory fsync and a restart after that are checked on a real filesystem by pr536/cache-edge-probe (all pass: the selection stays in memory, no temporary record is left, and the persisted record is read back after a restart). Not tested: physical multi-device isolation and device-visibility remapping.
  • Performance scope: measured only at the preset sizes on B200, in BF16. No end-to-end training-step speedup is claimed.

Results (H100 / Hopper)

Run at this PR's head 2e12dfbf. NVIDIA H100, torch 2.13.0+cu130, Triton 3.7.1, _C built from this tree (the B200 "environment B"). Raw logs and the per-case summary: hopper-main/pr536.

Suite Passed Skipped Failed
tests/ops/gemm/test_det_gemm.py, RL_KERNEL_AUTOTUNE=0 73 9 0
tests/ops/gemm/test_det_gemm.py, RL_KERNEL_AUTOTUNE=1 73 9 0

tests/benchmarks/test_autotuning_benchmark.py 18 0 0

Skips are dtypes the existing operators do not support (their original errors are asserted) and the GEMM cases that need ROCm gfx942. Abbreviated on H100: tests/ops autotune sweep (2023 passed, 9 failed, 362 skipped), strict 2-GPU logprob (8 passed); full comparison against main not run. Summary: ops_summary.txt.

Performance: 5 independent process groups, 52 BF16 operator/preset/phase cases, same rule as above (a benefit counts only when the ranges of process medians do not overlap).

Confirmed faster Tuned slower Overlapping
Eager wall time 0 28 24
CUDA graph device time 12 4 36
  • Graph replay: the small SiLU and SwiGLU cases are 20% to 25% faster (silu-small 20.1 / 23.0 / 21.4% forward / backward / both, swiglu-small 24.5 / 21.3 / 22.8%); swiglu-throughput 1.4% to 1.8%; one embedding, one RMSNorm and one GEMM case under 1%. The four slower cases are 0.1% to 0.3% (RMSNorm backward, attention).
  • Eager: no case is faster; the tuned path is slower in 28 cases because per-call selection and dispatch cost exceeds the kernel gain, as on B200.
  • Auto-tuning therefore pays off mainly under CUDA graph capture on H100 as well.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added opt-in persistent autotuning for selected GPU operations, with validated kernel choices and cached selections across runs.
    • Added explicit access to tuned backends for supported operations.
    • Added benchmarking tools for comparing tuning results across fresh and restarted runs.
  • Documentation

    • Added a guide to autotuning configuration, supported operations, and benchmark results.
  • Performance

    • Added measurements for comparing tuned and fixed launches; this release does not claim confirmed performance gains.

Add an opt-in persistent autotuner (rl_engine/platforms/autotuner.py) that
profiles Triton launch candidates on first use and caches the winner on disk,
keyed by device identity (UUID/PCI, driver/runtime/library versions), source
revision, candidate set, input shape/dtype/stride, scalars and phase. Disabled
by default; with RL_KERNEL_AUTOTUNE unset every operator keeps its fixed launch.

The shared Triton adapter (backends/shared/triton/autotuning.py) wires SiLU,
SwiGLU, RoPE, embedding forward, RMSNorm forward/dx, ratio/KL and GRPO
normalisation through the tuner. Explicit tuned GEMM, attention and logprob
backends (backends/shared/triton/tuned.py) are selectable only by backend ID
through the runtime registry; strict and default dispatch are unchanged.
Reduction candidates vary only the stage count, so arithmetic order is fixed
and every candidate is byte-identical to the fixed launch.

Also fix the det_gemm test import guard: an internal ImportError (a renamed
ROCm reduce kernel) was reported as "Triton is unavailable", skipping the
Triton GEMM tests. The test now imports the current kernel name, and only
a missing triton package skips.

Includes the candidate qualification suite, cache/graph regression tests, the
cold/restart/precompiled benchmark (benchmarks/tuning) and B200 evidence under
reports/experiments/issue50_b200.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is launch selection for opted-in operators and processes reusing the same compatible cache entries. Cache write authority can affect subsequent matching launches, but does not supply arbitrary kernel code or arbitrary launch options. Tenant and service exposure cannot be determined without deployment topology.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new filesystem-to-launch boundary accepts records only for a matching schema, key, and caller-supplied candidate. Disk hits bypass fresh numerical qualification. Directories are created with mode 0700, and POSIX checks reject foreign ownership or group/other write permission before disk access; the check does not establish trusted ancestry.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Candidate search deliberately leaves reduction layouts fixed because initial-input equality does not establish equivalence on later inputs. Documentation explicitly states that full CUDA/ROCm acceptance remains incomplete; available cache tests do not establish hardware numerical acceptance.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Provision deployment caches under trusted directory ancestry and isolate writable cache volumes between mutually untrusted workloads, including workloads sharing an operating-system identity. Treat cache write access as launch-selection authority, not merely access to disposable performance data.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #50 requires: (1) a HAL autotuning wrapper in rl_engine/platforms/autotuner.py that profiles on first execution; (2) local caching keyed by GPU identity and input shape; (3) Triton operators routed through the wrapper instead of static @triton.autotune heuristics.

(1) Covered. The raw summary describes PersistentAutotuner.select in rl_engine/platforms/autotuner.py. It evaluates candidates on a cache miss, keeps the unchanged launch as the baseline, and selects the lowest timing.
(2) Covered. The cache key includes device identity (UUID or PCI bus ID, driver, runtime and library versions), input shape, dtype, stride, scalars and phase. Writes are atomic, with per-key locks and a memory fallback. The issue names a PCIe ID; the implementation accepts UUID or PCI bus ID, which includes the PCIe ID.
(3) Covered in substance. Base-revision files checked (activation/swiglu.py, rope/rope.py) contain no @triton.autotune decorator. They used fixed launch parameters. The head wires these kernels, and the other listed operators, through TunableKernel and pin_autotune in rl_engine/backends/shared/triton/*. The wiring uses decorators and a launch adapter, not literal base-class inheritance from ops/triton/base.py. That path is an example in the issue, and the requirement intent (operators launch through the wrapper) is met.

Benchmarks, tests and reports in the PR record the operator suites, candidate qualification and the cache behavior. ROCm validation is not a requirement in #50. Remaining uncertainty: the whole-PR diff was not read line by line; the assessment relies on the whole-PR summary and two base-file reads.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Changes map to issue #50 or support it:

  • Tuner and cache: rl_engine/platforms/autotuner.py, rl_engine/backends/shared/triton/autotuning.py.
  • Operator wiring: swiglu, deterministic_attn, embedding, det_gemm, batch_invariant_logp, grpo_loss, ratio_kl, rmsnorm, rope.
  • Explicit tuned backends in tuned.py and the get_op(backend=) registry extension. These route GEMM, attention and logprob core kernels through the same tuner. They are selectable only by explicit ID, and default dispatch is unchanged, so they serve the wrapper objective.
  • Tests (autotuner, registry, GPU regressions, candidate qualification, benchmark) and benchmarks/tuning/*, docs/usage/autotuning.md and docs/.nav.yml. These verify or document the wrapper.
  • tests/ops/gemm/test_det_gemm.py import guard. It affects the Triton GEMM path that this PR wires through the tuner.

No change was found that lacks a connection to #50. Remaining uncertainty: the explicit tuned backends extend beyond the issue text; they are judged in scope because they apply the wrapper to existing operators.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Avoid shadowing the backend parameter in the priority loop.

The new backend: str | None parameter is reused by the legacy loop. Mypy therefore reports _get_or_create_backend(backend) as receiving str | Any, which fails the configured CI check. The explicit branch already passes an OpBackend; this is not a runtime cache-key mismatch.

Fsync the parent directory after os.replace.

The code fsyncs the temporary file before the rename. It does not fsync the containing directory after the rename. After a power loss, the renamed entry can be lost and the tuning result disappears. The cost is only one extra tuning run, so this is a durability gap, not a correctness defect. Open path.parent read-only, call os.fsync on it, and ignore OSError.

- Import RLKernelMode/rl_kernel_mode from rl_engine.runtime.policy, not the
  compatibility alias mypy cannot resolve.
- Annotate the launch cache and fail explicitly when a kernel's source
module cannot be resolved; the revision hash input is unchanged.
- Rename the priority-loop variable in KernelRegistry.get_op so it no longer
  shadows the explicit backend argument.
- Fsync the cache directory after the atomic rename.
- In candidate qualification, an OutOfResources candidate is recorded and
skipped on its own instead of skipping the whole test.

Re-ran the auto-tuning suites on B200 in both environments and refreshed the
evidence and source fingerprints.

Thanks for the review. The two findings from the review body are also addressed in f3df6e9:

  • get_op shadowing backend (registry.py): the priority loop now uses candidate_backend, which clears the mypy arg-type error.
  • Directory fsync after os.replace (autotuner.py): after the rename, the cache directory is opened read-only and fsynced. An OSError there is ignored, since losing the entry only costs one extra tuning run.

All six mypy errors from the linting job are fixed; mypy --ignore-missing-imports rl_engine/ reports no issues. With PyTorch's own type stubs installed, this branch shows the same 14 pre-existing errors as main and no new ones.

After these changes the auto-tuning suites were re-run on B200 with PyTorch 2.14/Triton 3.8 and with PyTorch 2.13/Triton 3.7.1, and the results are unchanged. HAL and registry: 31 passed. Regressions: 60 passed, 2 skipped. Candidate qualification: 402 passed, 27 skipped, all candidates byte-identical and none resource-limited. Benchmark: 18 passed. GEMM with _C: 73 passed, 9 skipped. The evidence and source fingerprints under reports/experiments/issue50_b200 are updated.

…nctions

- Create the cache directory with mode 0700. If an existing directory is owned
by another user or is group/other-writable, keep selections in memory and
warn, since anyone able to write records could steer candidate selection.
Tests cover both cases and the mode of a newly created directory.
- Document the private-cache requirement in docs/usage/autotuning.md.
- Add docstrings to every function, method and class this change adds or
modifies, including benchmarks and tests (code is otherwise unchanged).

Re-ran the auto-tuning suites on B200 in both environments and refreshed the
evidence and source fingerprints.

@coderabbitai, outside-diff finding: Avoid shadowing the backend parameter in the priority loop (rl_engine/runtime/registry.py:1041-1072).

Agreed, fixed in f3df6e9. The priority loop in KernelRegistry.get_op now uses candidate_backend, so the explicit backend: str | None argument is no longer reused for OpBackend values. This clears the mypy arg-type error from the linting job. As you noted, there was no runtime cache-key mismatch: the explicit branch already passed an OpBackend.

@coderabbitai, nitpick: Fsync the parent directory after os.replace (rl_engine/platforms/autotuner.py:170).

Agreed, fixed in f3df6e9. After the atomic rename the cache directory is opened read-only and fsynced. An OSError from that step is ignored, since losing the entry after a power failure only costs one extra tuning run.

@coderabbitai, pre-merge check: Docstring coverage is 10.24% (threshold 80%).

Fixed in afb2c48. Every function, method and class this PR adds or modifies now has a docstring: 115 of 115, counting all functions in the new modules, benchmarks and tests, plus the functions whose lines change in det_gemm.py, registry.py and test_det_gemm.py. Test docstrings state the behaviour each test asserts.

The commit adds docstrings only. With docstrings stripped, the AST of every touched file is identical to the revision the B200 suites were re-run on.

@coderabbitai, security review hardening proposal: require a trusted private cache directory and check its ownership and permissions, since candidate-membership validation does not prove a persisted choice was qualified.

Agreed, implemented in afb2c48:

  • The tuner creates the cache directory with mode 0700.
  • If the directory already exists and is owned by another user, or is writable by group or others, the tuner logs a warning and keeps selections in memory. It neither reads nor writes records there.
  • Two new tests in tests/platforms/test_persistent_autotuner.py cover the group-writable and foreign-owner cases, plus the private mode of a newly created directory. With the check disabled, both cases fail.
  • docs/usage/autotuning.md now states that the cache directory must be private and must not be shared across users.

Even before this change, a record was accepted only if its configuration is one of the current candidates for that kernel; arbitrary launch options were rejected. On B200 every candidate is byte-identical to the fixed launch (see reports/experiments/issue50_b200), so there a tampered record could change speed but not results. That has not been shown on other hardware, which is why the directory check matters.

After this change the auto-tuning suites were re-run on B200 with PyTorch 2.14/Triton 3.8 and with PyTorch 2.13/Triton 3.7.1. HAL and registry: 34 passed, including the new tests. Regressions: 60 passed, 2 skipped. Candidate qualification: 402 passed, 27 skipped. Benchmark: 18 passed. GEMM with _C: 73 passed, 9 skipped.

@fusheng-ji Thanks for fixing the docstring coverage finding. I checked the docstring additions. The new test docstrings describe the behavior each test asserts.

One clarification: afb2c489 also includes cache-directory hardening and new tests. The docstring-only files have identical ASTs after docstrings are removed, but that statement does not apply to the entire commit.

@fusheng-ji Thanks for implementing the hardening. I checked the current code, tests, and documentation.

  • The tuner creates new cache directories with mode 0700.
  • The tuner rejects foreign-owned directories and directories writable by group or others before opening the lock file.
  • If a directory fails these checks, select() skips both cache reads and cache writes.
  • The tests cover the three reported cases. The documentation states the private-directory requirement.

This addresses the cache-directory finding. I did not rerun the B200 suites. The reported byte-identical results remain specific to the tested B200 environments.

Learning: In RL-Align/RL-Kernel, candidate-membership validation in rl_engine/platforms/autotuner.py does not establish that a persisted selection was qualified on the current hardware. The reported byte-identical autotuning candidate results in PR #536 apply to the tested B200 environments; qualification on other hardware, including ROCm, remains unverified.

@fusheng-ji Thanks for the fix. I verified that KernelRegistry.get_op now uses candidate_backend in the priority loop. It no longer shadows the backend: str | None parameter.

The explicit branch passes an OpBackend to _get_or_create_backend, as you stated. The finding concerned type checking, not a runtime cache-key mismatch. I did not rerun mypy.

@fusheng-ji Thanks for the fix and explanation. I verified that rl_engine/platforms/autotuner.py opens the cache directory read-only after os.replace, calls os.fsync, and closes the descriptor in finally.

Ignoring an OSError from directory open or fsync is acceptable for this disposable cache. Losing the cache entry causes another tuning run.

Learning: In RL-Align/RL-Kernel, PersistentAutotuner._write in rl_engine/platforms/autotuner.py treats parent-directory fsync as best effort after the atomic cache rename. Not all mutated buffers are declared. The forward kernel also writes nothing else, but the backward kernel's grad_policy_ptr is pre-zeroed by the caller and, in the WRITE_INACTIVE_ZERO=False branch (non-HIP fp32/other dtypes), inactive rows are intentionally left untouched. In the new tuned path, _Tuner validates a candidate only over outputs; with outputs=(8,) the whole grad_policy_ptr is required to be bitwise identical, which is satisfied only if every element is written. For WRITE_INACTIVE_ZERO=False, masked/inactive rows are never stored, so the untuned reference leaves the caller's pre-zeroed values while the scratch buffer used in _profile_candidates is a fresh clone of args[8] — that part is fine — but the final d_gate-style hazard above applies here too.

More concretely actionable: inout is empty for both kernels even though both are pure-writers here, so this is acceptable; however the fwd kernel outputs=(5, 6, 7, 8) requires all four buffers (ratio, kl, diff, logz) to be elementwise-equal across candidates. diff/logz come from the online-softmax loop whose order depends on BLOCK_V; launch_candidates only varies num_stages/num_warps for this kernel (no flat_block), so BLOCK_V is fixed — acceptable. Please confirm the intent is that only launch-stage/warps may vary here; if a future flat_block/BLOCK_V candidate is added the KL/ratio bitwise check against candidates[0] will silently reject all variants (or, worse, accept a numerically different logz for later use).

_write swallows OSError and only logs, so a failed persistence still leaves source = "tuned" in the returned TuneSelection and in _memory. Callers consuming source (see state.records/autotune_provenance) will record an untruthful provenance and the on-disk cache carries no record, causing every new process to retune. _write should report success/failure so source can reflect e.g. "tuned_memory_only" (or at least so the provenance distinguishes the non-persisted case).

maintainability · low

📄 rl_engine/platforms/autotuner.py (L160-L161)

⚠️ GitHub could not post this as an inline comment: Routed to summary (severity low · category maintainability)

The flock is released only implicitly when handle is closed; but the .lock file is never removed. With many distinct shapes/keys this grows an unbounded number of lock files in the cache directory. Also, fcntl.flock is a no-op on some platforms and on NFS, silently degrading cross-process safety — consider documenting or guarding that. Clean up lock files after release (best-effort unlink) if unbounded accumulation is not intended.

TunedGemmOp.forward_accum_fp32 aliases the already-wrapped forward_fp32, which is fine, but note _performance_entry sets self.autotune_provenance and opens a tuning_scope on every entry. If any wrapped method calls another wrapped method internally (e.g. attention forward_with_lse delegating to forward_fp32), the inner call resets the provenance dict and nests a second core=True scope, so the outer launches list loses all but the innermost records. Verify the entry points are mutually non-nesting, or make _performance_entry reuse an existing scope instead of always creating a new one.

pin_autotune unconditionally reassigns forward/backward as staticmethods. For torch.autograd.Function subclasses that use setup_context, the ctx argument is not passed as the first positional to forward, so pinned_forward(ctx, *args, **kwargs) will capture the wrong object as ctx and set autotune_state on a tensor/argument, silently disabling the intended policy pinning (and possibly raising AttributeError). Confirm none of the decorated Functions (_TritonDetGemmFn, _BatchInvariantLogpFunction, RMSNormTriton, _TritonDeterministicAttentionFn) use setup_context; if they ever do, this wrapper breaks.

bug · medium

📄 rl_engine/runtime/registry.py (L1066-L1067)

⚠️ GitHub could not post this as an inline comment: Routed to summary (severity medium · category bug)

The explicit-backend path only gates on platform, not on the instance's actual capability/contract. TunedAttentionOp defaults require_bitwise_libm=False, so an explicit request on ROCm will silently return a non-bitwise-libm attention path even though the subclass sets is_batch_invariant = False. Also, _get_or_create_backend is not guarded against returning an instance whose __init__ raised for other capability reasons beyond Triton availability. Since the docstring promises to raise on unavailable explicit requests, add a capability/contract check (e.g. dtype/layout support and, for attention, libm bitwise parity) and raise rather than returning a mismatched instance.

bug · medium

📄 benchmarks/tuning/autotuning_experiment.py (L216-L219)

⚠️ GitHub could not post this as an inline comment: Routed to summary (severity medium · category bug)

The per-phase os.environ["RL_KERNEL_AUTOTUNE"] toggling inside the timed region is not a timing boundary problem by itself, but combined with the later hot-call check it hides state: the timed loop sets the env var, so a final leftover value of "0" after the loop will silently disable tuning for the subsequent fixed_value/comparison path, and the before_hot check then passes trivially. Set the env var once before the timed loop via tuning_scope rather than mutating global env inside the measurement.

📄 benchmarks/tuning/autotuning_experiment.py (L204-L208)

⚠️ GitHub could not post this as an inline comment: Routed to summary (severity medium · category test)

This check cannot distinguish a genuine cache hit from tuning being disabled: if the tuned path never consults the selector (e.g. RL_KERNEL_AUTOTUNE state is wrong, or the op was not instrumented), selected_records stays unchanged and the assertion passes. Assert that the hot call actually launched a tuned kernel (e.g. the tuned kernel was invoked with the previously recorded config) in addition to checking no new selection occurred.

bug · medium

📄 benchmarks/tuning/autotuning_experiment.py (L435-L436)

⚠️ GitHub could not post this as an inline comment: Routed to summary (severity medium · category bug)

aggregate_trials joins cases across modes/trials by positional index only. If any worker returns cases in a different order or count (e.g. an operator raises and the case is skipped), the index silently maps a different spec's timing and reports misattributed break-even numbers. Validate alignment (e.g. by matching case["id"] to spec["id"] and raising on mismatch) before aggregating.

…t positional

Address OpenCodeReview: an output passed by keyword made args[outputs[0]] raise IndexError on the tuned path. Fall back to the fixed launch instead; covered by a CPU test.

…ction

Address OpenCodeReview: state.records[0] raised a bare IndexError when the device identity was unavailable.

…ument the baselines

Address OpenCodeReview: pinned_backward falls back to the environment policy when the context has no autotune_state; the candidate qualification test fails with a clear message when nothing was compared; fixed_case states what the baseline is for each operator.
