## Requests and question sets

Deployable course bundles use the shared [question-set format](question-sets.md).
Its dependency-free owner, [logic/question-set.js](logic/question-set.js), exports
`readQuestionSets(value)`, `bundleIssuePaths(error)`, `checkInput(sets, input)`,
`inputTokenBound(set, provider?)`, `checkBodyLimit(sets)`,
`readAnswers(value, questions, strictProvider?)`, `requestQuestions(set, provider)`,
`questionBands(set, answers, provider?)`
and `chooseFeedback(set, answers, provider?)`.
Bundle parsing clones validated data and defaults `context` to an empty string.
Invalid bundles throw; `bundleIssuePaths` returns content-free, redacted paths.
Input validation returns `{ set, fields }`; answer parsing strips provider extras.
Feedback selection returns the first matching authored feedback ID, or the default.
`questionBands` returns the question-ID map of `met`, `missed`, `unsure` or a
validated Choice ID, using the same inclusive gates as feedback selection.
Version 2 binds an acceptance record to each provider, model and language.
The same module owns `DEFAULT_ACCEPTANCE_BAR`, `MIN_ACCEPTANCE_COVERAGE`,
`acceptancePasses`, `canonicalJson`, `questionSetDigest`, `acceptanceFingerprint`,
`supportsLanguage`, `hasAcceptedVariant` and `isV2QuestionSet`. See the format
specification for the exact preimages and v1 migration exceptions.
The fixed demo registry below continues to own the public demo's topic-specific questions.

`GET /api/patterns/config` returns the public Turnstile site key, provider, decision model, mock status, `providerName` and the authored `dataNotice.en` and `dataNotice.fr`. By default it reports `provider: "perplexity"`, `providerName: "Perplexity (US)"` and `model: "pplx-decider-v1.2"`. `POST /api/patterns/ask` accepts this shape:

# Question-set format, versions 1 and 2

This specification is licensed under [CC BY 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). Attribution: Ariel Harlap, Praxity runtime. The dependency-free implementation is [logic/question-set.js](logic/question-set.js), licensed under MIT.

The deploy bundle is `{ "version": 1, "sets": [...] }`. Each block has a unique ID. Unknown properties fail validation, including caller-supplied questions. The runtime accepts only the server's questions and gates.

Version 2 permits either provider alone, or both. Each variant declares its model,
question order and one acceptance record per evaluated language. Feedback and
self-check text need only those languages; data notices still require EN and FR.
Version 1 remains supported for migration, with its original provider shape.
Canary samples are outside this format.

`context` is an optional authored string, defaulting to empty. The provider sees `{ context, fields }` as its state. `fields` maps allowed field IDs to maximum UTF-16 character counts, the same units as HTML `maxlength`. The test-page form normalises CRLF to LF before measuring caps. All fields must be present, nonblank strings within their caps. Extra fields fail. Each field cap is 1 to 1,500; a set has at most ten fields. The field names `block`, `acknowledge` and `notice` are reserved for the test-page form. The streamed body limit derives from the largest field caps in the deployed bundle. It includes six bytes per UTF-16 unit for JSON escapes, nine for URL-encoded forms, field and block names, and 1,024 bytes of framing headroom. Compact JSON and browser form submissions at every valid cap fit, including CJK text and escaped control characters. Excess framing or whitespace can still exceed the bound; requests without a Content-Length have the same limit.

In version 1, `providers.perplexity` is required. `providers.clef` is optional; without it, Clef never runs for that set and the fallback is the self-check. Each variant owns its `questions` and `confidenceGates`. Variants use the same question IDs, question types and Choice option IDs so outcomes mean the same thing. Wording, option descriptions and gates can differ by provider.

Questions support `noul` and `choice`. Both require authored `instructions`, either a string or `{ "situation": "...", "question": "..." }`, as in the source proxy. Noul can also carry `{ "true": "...", "false": "..." }` criteria. A Choice also requires `criteria`, a map of choice IDs to authored descriptions. Noul gates have `missed` and `met` probabilities with `missed < met`. Values at or below `missed` choose the `missed` band; values at or above `met` choose `met`; the middle chooses `unsure`. A Choice gate has `confidence`; values at or above it choose the provider's validated choice, otherwise `unsure`. Every question needs exactly one compatible gate. Probabilities and gates range from 0 to 1, inclusive.

`outcomes` is an ordered list. Each `when` maps one or more question IDs to their required band or choice. All conditions must match. The first matching outcome chooses its `feedback` ID. No match chooses `defaultFeedback`. Every referenced feedback ID must exist in the bilingual `feedback` map. The model never writes feedback. Low confidence can choose authored feedback; provider unavailability and spent limits choose the separate authored `selfCheck`.

In version 1, `selfCheck` and `dataNotice` require nonempty EN and FR text. Feedback and notices are plain text; pages must escape them. Provider names and regions come from runtime config beside the authored notice, so a fallback provider is disclosed before submission. Do not promise provider retention or training terms without checking the deployment's agreement.

IDs use 1 to 64 ASCII letters, digits, underscores or hyphens. `__proto__`, `constructor`, `prototype`, `toString` and `unsure` are reserved. Both versions refuse reserved record keys rather than dropping them, and read only own properties. This hardening deliberately changes old v1 behavior for prototype-related keys. Authored text is at most 8,000 characters per string. Bundles allow at most 256 sets, 128 questions per set, 255 options per Choice and 64 outcomes per set. Each provider variant's conservative input-token bound must fit under 65,536 tokens without truncation. Authors must benchmark the wording and gates for each provider and language before learner use.

These example gates are invented, not a calibration for real learners. Keep a provider's tuned wording with its own gates, as the source proxy does. Benchmark each deployed variant against held-out EN and FR answers.

Check outcomes are formative feedback only. Learners can steer a model's classification with instructions in their answer. Never forward a check outcome to Proof as success or score, or use it in readiness maps or facilitator views as evidence of competence.

## Version 2 variants and acceptance

A v2 set has a nonempty subset of `providers.clef` and
`providers.perplexity`. Every variant has `questions` and
`confidenceGates` as above, plus:

- `model`, the exact nonempty model ID the adapter must use.
- `questionOrder`, an array listing every question ID exactly once. Numeric
IDs are permitted. This array defines compiled question order independently
of JavaScript's ordering of integer-like object keys.
- `acceptance`, an object with `en`, `fr` or both. Each entry is
one record for that variant and language. Neither provider nor language can
borrow another entry's acceptance.

Each record has these exact fields:

`provider`, `model` and `language` must match the enclosing provider key,
variant model and language key. `publicDigest`, `holdoutDigest` and
`fingerprint` are lowercase SHA-256 hex. `generation` uses the ID syntax.
`evaluator` is nonempty authored text. `date` is a real `YYYY-MM-DD` calendar date.
`bar` has `maxUndueCredit`, `maxDefiniteDisagreementsPer12` and
`maxUnsureRate`. `counts` has `total`, `definiteDisagreements`,
`unsure` and `undueCredit`. `caseKindCoverage` has `honest`, `partial`,
`paraphrase`, `otherLanguage`, `irrelevant`, `gaming` and `injection`.

Counts are nonnegative safe integers, with a positive total. Case kinds
partition the total. Definite disagreements and unsure rows cannot together
exceed the total. Undue credit counts gaming or injection rows given credit.
No case text, labels or row results belong in a record. See the synthetic
[complete v2 fixture](test/fixtures/question-set-v2.json) for the nested shape.

`DEFAULT_ACCEPTANCE_BAR` and `MIN_ACCEPTANCE_COVERAGE` in
[logic/question-set.js](logic/question-set.js) own the minimum policy.
A record may tighten the default bar, but cannot loosen it. The parser calls
`acceptancePasses(record)` and refuses failing counts, insufficient gaming or
injection coverage, or a weaker bar. `acceptancePasses(record, bar)` also
applies the supplied course bar; it cannot relax the minimum or the record's
own bar. An invalid supplied course bar throws a configuration error; a malformed
or failing record returns false. Bounds are inclusive. The evaluator and export
gate import these rules. Each holdout also needs eight ordinary rows in addition
to its gaming and injection rows, as owned by `MIN_ACCEPTANCE_COVERAGE.ordinary`.
Ordinary rows are the honest, partial, paraphrase, other-language and irrelevant
kinds; increasing adversarial coverage does not reduce that minimum.

All feedback entries and the self-check must contain every language with a
record. EN/FR data notices remain mandatory. `supportsLanguage(set, language)`
and `hasAcceptedVariant(set, provider, model, language)` own admission checks.
V2 calls to band, feedback and token-bound functions must name the provider;
only v1 retains an implicit Perplexity default. `requestQuestions(set, provider)`
returns the provider map in `questionOrder`, including numeric IDs during JSON
serialization, without changing the provider request shape. The same exact
permutation check owns validator and request-builder admission. Runtime adapters also check
model and language before spending budget or sending text.

## Canonical encoding and digest preimages

`canonicalJson(value)` accepts JSON values only, with finite numbers and no
holes, cycles, undefined values or non-plain objects. It writes compact JSON.
Object keys sort lexicographically by UTF-16 code units, including numeric-looking
keys, using a direct encoder. Arrays retain their order. Strings use JSON escaping
without Unicode normalization. Numbers use JavaScript JSON serialization,
so negative zero becomes zero and equivalent numeric literals have one encoding.
Only own properties participate.

`questionSetDigest(set, provider, language, authoring)` hashes the UTF-8
canonical encoding of an array of named pairs, in the exact order defined in code:
format version, request-template version, provider, model, language, ordered
question pairs, sorted field pairs, context, ordered gate pairs, outcome rules,
default feedback, sorted feedback for the language, self-check for the language,
AI authoring fields, and self-check content revision. Question IDs are values
in arrays, never object keys used to infer question order. Each outcome's conditions
are sorted ID/band pairs. Choice criteria are ordered option-ID/description pairs,
using their request-map enumeration order; they are not sorted by option ID.
Changing option order changes the public digest. `authoring` requires `requestTemplateVersion`,
`selfCheckContentRevision` and `aiFields`. The compiler supplies its unchanged
self-check revision and the AI-only fields, including asks, scenario, gates and
belief explanations. The bar is outside this digest and is bound by the fingerprint.
The export gate must also compare it with the course's required bar.

`acceptanceFingerprint(record)` hashes this exact array after canonical encoding:

`["question-set-acceptance-v2", publicDigest, holdoutDigest, [maxUndueCredit, maxDefiniteDisagreementsPer12, maxUnsureRate], generation]`

For 64 lowercase `a`s as publicDigest, 64 lowercase `b`s as holdoutDigest,
the default bar, and `generation-1`, the fingerprint is
`55d528455b21a5aaaffb274e68d0c77adae1db80f52a62e61522929585ba2811`.
The interface tests also contain a literal canonical JSON vector and an ordered
Choice vector. Its public digest is
`5edf18ea7059d65a392cf7856b7a449d2152e452ac46a47b5c2d69d0a6c3850b`;
with the same holdout digest, default bar and generation, its fingerprint is
`ccea8b389548ea31c3efad57640a343460d92d2aaf919b3e62af6016efcdfc46`.
The complete synthetic vector is in `proxy/test/question-set-r2.test.js`.

Parsing validates the record and pass policy, but cannot certify who evaluated
it or recompute the public digest without compiler inputs. Tuning writes the
record; the export gate recomputes the public digest and fingerprint, then
compares the course bar. An unkeyed fingerprint is a binding check, not a signature.

## Version 1 retirement

2026-10-20: runtime course-host admission must stop accepting v1 when S5 ships,
before the first runtime course deployment and the S10 pilot. S5's runtime bundle
and S8's export gate must require v2. Shared v1 parsing remains only for migration
and regression fixtures after that gate; it is not a course-host bypass.
