Welcome to the Extended-Augmented-Reality-Link wiki!

EARL for short. Over the last few years, the AR market has seen a wave of wearable glasses using Sony 1080p micro-OLED displays. Examples include Nreal Air, Rokid Air, Virtue One, TLC's line of glasses, and a few others. A common theme with these products is that they are dumb, being nothing more than 1080p displays with female USBc DP-alt inputs. The goal of this project is to make a lightweight module that can provide a game-style HUD. The Virtue One's use a neckband that is essentially a battery powered Android TV that connects over a short cable. EARL could also hang on the back of the glasses, or be built directly into a custom version of these 'AR' glasses once the display tech is available for DIY use.

An immediate problem is power draw. Nreal states the power consumption for thier 'air' glasses is 5 hours of video playback at low brightness from a phone using a 4000mah battery using wifi. From a 14.8Wh battery that means about 3W system draw. If half of that is from the phone, a 1.5W power draw is reasonable to assume.

Hopeful feature-creep:

  • Wireless p2p display streaming from phone
  • Integration through bluetooth for relevant data(steps, device battery, notifications)
  • Hot swap batteries
  • 3DOF AR mode
