What this is

Ten new playable civilizations for Blockilization, which takes the game from 20 to 30. Each one has an ability, a unique unit, a unique building, a voxel leader bust with its three moods, an emblem, a bot personality, a true start on the Earth map, and a win achievement.

Civ Leader Ability Unique unit Unique building
America George Washington Manifest Destiny: +1 sight for land units, tiles cost half the gold Minuteman (Musketman, ignores terrain) Film Studio (Broadcast Tower, +50% tourism)
Spain Isabella Seven Cities of Gold: natural wonders yield and cheer twice as much, gold for finding each one (triple for the first finder) Conquistador (Knight) Mission (Temple, +2 science)
Siam Ramkhamhaeng Father Governs Children: 50% more food, culture and faith from city-state friends Naresuan's Elephant (Knight) Wat (University, +3 culture)
Ethiopia Haile Selassie Spirit of Adwa: +20% against civs with more cities Mehal Sefari (Rifleman, +25% in own land) Stele (Monument, +2 faith)
Celts Boudicca Druidic Lore: +1 faith per worked forest Pictish Warrior (Spearman, +20% abroad) Ceilidh Hall (Opera House, +3 happiness)
Carthage Dido Phoenician Heritage: free Lighthouse in every coastal city it founds, with no upkeep Quinquereme (Trireme) Cothon (Lighthouse, +25% naval production)
Poland Casimir III Solidarity: a free social policy each new era Winged Hussar (Lancer) Ducal Stable (Stable, no upkeep)
Netherlands William of Orange Dutch East India Company: +2 gold on sea routes; a luxury traded away keeps half its happiness Sea Beggar (Privateer, heals ships nearby) Polder (Water Mill, food from marsh and flood plains)
Polynesia Kamehameha Wayfinding: embark and cross the ocean from the start, +1 sight at sea Maori Warrior (Warrior, Haka: adjacent enemies -10%) Marae (Shrine, +2 culture)
Denmark Harald Bluetooth Viking Fury: one-move embark and landing, +1 move at sea Berserker (Longswordsman, no penalty attacking from sea or across rivers) Ring Fortress (Walls, +10 XP for land units)

Rules changes behind these:

  • New combat condition vs_more_cities.
  • New unit abilities homeland, foreign_lands, haka and amphibious.
  • New civ specials, each read through the existing civOf(p).ability.effects.special pattern.
  • canEmbark and canCrossOcean are now exported from movement.ts. The bots' planners use them, so Polynesian bots know they can settle overseas early.

Other changes:

  • Portraits come from tools/portraits.mjs via node tools/pictures.mjs, which adds 40 PNGs. The existing pictures are unchanged.
  • Fix: the effects coverage sweep (tests/sweep.ts) placed six city-states 12 columns apart on a 50-wide map. It crashed already on main and now spaces them 8 apart.

I checked the emblems and busts in static previews while drawing them. I didn't capture the lobby in a browser here, because the 3D page wouldn't render headless. The civ picker is an auto-fill grid, so the extra civs just wrap into more rows.

Checklist

  • npm run build passes: tsc --noEmit, check:boundaries, vite build and check:bundle all pass. The wasm was built with --no-opt because the wasm-opt download was blocked here.
  • npm run test:headless: I ran only the Blockilization headless tests (build, chat, mp, saves), and they pass. The rules suite (tests/effects.ts) passes 269/269, including a new test for each ability. tests/effects-coverage.ts reports 0 effects never read.
  • The game imports only from @platform / @platform/client.
  • Names follow the existing civs: historical civilizations and leaders, as with Egypt, Rome and the rest.
  • Assets are generated in the repo (voxel busts in tools/portraits.mjs, SVG glyphs in client/icons.ts).

America, Spain, Siam, Ethiopia, the Celts, Carthage, Poland, the
Netherlands, Polynesia and Denmark join the game, thirty in all. Each has
its own ability, unique unit and unique building in Civ V's spirit, a
voxel leader bust with its three moods, an emblem, a bot personality, a
true start on the Earth map and a win achievement.

New rules behind them: +20% against civs with more cities, natural
wonders doubled with gold for finding them, half again from city-state
friends, a free coastal Lighthouse, a free policy each era, +2 gold on
sea routes and half happiness from luxuries traded away, embarking and
crossing the ocean from the start (bots know it too), one-move landings
with +1 move at sea, and the unit abilities Homeland, Foreign lands,
Haka and Amphibious. Each has a test.

The effects coverage sweep placed six city-states past the edge of its
map and crashed; they now fit.
