PR Evaluation Report

Summary

This PR integrates PostHog into a Vue.js movies app by adding posthog-js as a dependency, initializing it in main.js, and adding custom event captures across multiple components (login, logout, search, media selection, trailer playback). Error tracking is implemented via app.config.errorHandler. However, the integration is missing user identification (identify/reset), a reverse proxy, and contains a likely runtime error from using the undocumented posthog.logger property.

Files changed Lines added Lines removed
10 +114 -4

Confidence score: 5/5 🧙

  • No posthog.identify() call: The app has a login system (useAuth composable with username), but never calls posthog.identify() after login. All events remain anonymous and cannot be linked to users. [CRITICAL]
  • No posthog.reset() on logout: The logout handler captures a user_logged_out event but never calls posthog.reset(), so the next user on the same browser inherits the previous session identity. [CRITICAL]
  • posthog.logger is not a documented SDK property: SearchView.vue accesses posthog.logger and calls .info() / .error() on it. The SDK reference documents posthog.captureLog() as the correct API. Accessing .logger will likely return undefined, causing a TypeError at runtime when a user performs a search. [MEDIUM]
  • No reverse proxy configured: Client-side PostHog requests go directly to us.i.posthog.com, making them susceptible to ad blockers. [MEDIUM]

File changes

Filename Score Description
src/main.js 4/5 PostHog initialization with env var checks, error handler, and defaults config. Clean implementation with dev-mode error for missing vars.
src/views/SearchView.vue 2/5 Search tracking with search_submitted event and properties. Uses undocumented posthog.logger API that will likely cause runtime errors.
src/views/LoginView.vue 2/5 Captures user_logged_in but missing posthog.identify() call with the available username.
src/components/NavBar.vue 2/5 Captures user_logged_out but missing posthog.reset() after logout.
src/components/media/MediaCard.vue 4/5 Clean media_selected event with useful properties (media_id, media_type, selection_surface).
src/components/media/MediaHero.vue 4/5 trailer_started event capture with media_id property.
src/views/MediaDetailView.vue 4/5 trailer_started event with both media_id and media_type.
.env.example 5/5 Documents both required env vars.
.gitignore 5/5 Correctly excludes .env file.
package.json 5/5 posthog-js added as dependency.

App sanity check ⚠️

Criteria Result Description
App builds and runs Yes Syntax is valid; app will build. Runtime errors possible from posthog.logger usage.
Preserves existing env vars & configs Yes Only additions, no modifications to existing config.
No syntax or type errors Yes No syntax errors in changed files.
Correct imports/exports Yes posthog-js imported correctly in all client-side components.
Minimal, focused changes Yes All changes relate to PostHog integration.
Pre-existing issues None No pre-existing issues observed.

Issues

  • posthog.logger runtime error: SearchView.vue accesses posthog.logger which is not a documented SDK property. The SDK exposes posthog.captureLog() instead. Calling .info() or .error() on undefined will throw TypeError when a user performs a search. Replace with posthog.captureLog({ body: 'media search requested', level: 'info', attributes: {...} }). [MEDIUM]
  • Dev-mode throw new Error: When env vars are missing, main.js throws in dev mode, crashing the app entirely rather than degrading gracefully. A console.warn would be less disruptive. [LOW]

Other completed criteria

  • Environment variables documented in .env.example
  • Build configuration valid (posthog-js added to package.json dependencies)
  • .env added to .gitignore to prevent secret leakage

PostHog implementation ⚠️

Criteria Result Description
PostHog SDKs installed Yes posthog-js ^1.441.2 added to package.json
PostHog client initialized Yes posthog.init() in main.js with api_host, defaults: '2026-08-30', and logs config
capture() Yes Multiple meaningful capture calls: user_logged_in, user_logged_out, media_selected, trailer_started, search_submitted
identify() No Never called despite app having login with username available
Error tracking Yes app.config.errorHandler calls posthog.captureException(error) — correct Vue pattern
Reverse proxy No Not configured; events go directly to PostHog host

Issues

  • Missing posthog.identify(): The app has a login system with useAuth composable that provides a user object with username. After successful login in LoginView.vue, posthog.identify(username) should be called to associate events with the logged-in user. Without this, all events are anonymous and cannot be attributed to specific users. [CRITICAL]
  • Missing posthog.reset() on logout: The NavBar.vue logout handler captures user_logged_out but never calls posthog.reset(). Per PostHog docs, reset must be called on logout to prevent the next user from inheriting the previous user's identity. Add posthog.reset() after the logout event capture. [CRITICAL]
  • No reverse proxy: Client-side tracking is susceptible to ad blockers without a reverse proxy. The docs recommend setting one up via Cloudflare, Vercel rewrites, or PostHog's managed service. [MEDIUM]

Other completed criteria

  • API key loaded from VITE_POSTHOG_PROJECT_TOKEN environment variable (not hardcoded)
  • API host loaded from VITE_POSTHOG_HOST environment variable
  • defaults: '2026-08-30' correctly set per current docs
  • Defensive isPostHogConfigured guard used consistently across all components

PostHog insights and events ⚠️

Filename PostHog events Description
src/main.js captureException Global error handler captures unhandled Vue exceptions
src/views/LoginView.vue user_logged_in Captured after successful login (missing identify call)
src/components/NavBar.vue user_logged_out Captured before logout executes (missing reset call)
src/components/media/MediaCard.vue media_selected Tracks media item clicks with media_id, media_type, selection_surface
src/components/media/MediaHero.vue trailer_started Tracks trailer playback with media_id
src/views/MediaDetailView.vue trailer_started Tracks trailer playback with media_id and media_type
src/views/SearchView.vue search_submitted Tracks searches with query_length and result_count

Issues

  • user_logged_in event lacks identity: The event fires but without an identify() call, PostHog cannot associate it with the user. This means funnels starting from login will not connect to subsequent identified user actions. [CRITICAL]
  • posthog.logger calls in SearchView will crash: The posthogLogger.info() and posthogLogger.error() calls use an undocumented API. These will throw runtime errors during search, preventing search_submitted events from firing in the error case. [MEDIUM]

Other completed criteria

  • Events represent real user actions (login, logout, search, media selection, trailer play)
  • Events enable product insights (login → search → select → play trailer funnel is possible)
  • Events include relevant properties (media_id, media_type, query_length, result_count, selection_surface)
  • No PII in event properties (no emails, names, or phone numbers in capture properties)
  • Event naming is consistent snake_case and descriptive
