PR Evaluation Report

Summary

This PR adds PostHog analytics to a React Router e-commerce shopper app. It creates a client provider component with lazy-loaded initialization, wraps the app with PostHogProvider and PostHogErrorBoundary, and adds well-structured capture events across the shopping flow (product catalog, cart, and checkout). No user identification or reverse proxy is configured.

Files changed Lines added Lines removed
8 +154 -7

Confidence score: 5/5 🧙

  • No identify() call: While the app has no authentication flow, the integration provides no guidance or placeholder for user identification. If auth is ever added, all prior events will remain anonymous and unlinked. [MEDIUM]
  • No reverse proxy configured: The Vite config has no proxy rewrites for PostHog, making client-side events susceptible to ad blockers. [MEDIUM]
  • Lazy-loaded PostHog SDK may miss early events: The provider uses a dynamic import("posthog-js") inside useEffect, meaning any events from the initial render or early user interactions before the SDK loads will be silently dropped. [MEDIUM]

File changes

Filename Score Description
.env.example 4/5 Documents both required env vars (token and host)
app/components/PostHogClientProvider.tsx 3/5 Custom provider with lazy loading, error boundary, and singleton pattern — but dynamic import risks missing early events
app/root.tsx 5/5 Clean wrapping of app with PostHogClientProvider
app/routes/cart.tsx 5/5 Well-structured cart events with enriched properties
app/routes/checkout.tsx 4/5 Good order_completed event; also uses posthog.logger for structured logging
app/routes/products..tsx 5/5 Product detail add-to-cart with source tracking
app/routes/products.tsx 5/5 Catalog add-to-cart with source tracking
package.json 5/5 Both posthog-js and @posthog/react added correctly

App sanity check ✅

Criteria Result Description
App builds and runs Yes No syntax errors; valid TSX throughout
Preserves existing env vars & configs Yes Existing CartProvider and routes preserved; only wrapped with PostHog provider
No syntax or type errors Yes All TypeScript types are correct; proper use of optional chaining
Correct imports/exports Yes posthog-js, @posthog/react imports are valid
Minimal, focused changes Yes All changes are PostHog-related
Pre-existing issues None Base app appears clean

Issues

No issues.

Other completed criteria

  • Environment variables documented in .env.example
  • Build configuration valid with correct package additions
  • Import ordering change in root.tsx is trivial alphabetical reorder

PostHog implementation ⚠️

Criteria Result Description
PostHog SDKs installed Yes posthog-js ^1.441.2 and @posthog/react ^1.11.3 in package.json
PostHog client initialized Yes posthog.init() with token, host, defaults: "2026-08-30", and logs config
capture() Yes 5 meaningful capture calls across cart, checkout, and product routes
identify() No No identify() call anywhere in the codebase
Error tracking Yes PostHogErrorBoundary wraps the entire app in the provider
Reverse proxy No No proxy configuration in Vite config or elsewhere

Issues

  • No user identification: The app has no posthog.identify() or posthog.reset() calls. While the app currently lacks authentication, there is no placeholder or setup for future identification. All events remain permanently anonymous, which limits PostHog's ability to build person profiles or connect cross-session behavior. [MEDIUM]
  • No reverse proxy: No Vite rewrites or middleware configured to proxy PostHog requests through the app's domain. Client-side events are vulnerable to ad blockers. [MEDIUM]
  • Dynamic import delays SDK initialization: Using void import("posthog-js").then(...) inside useEffect means PostHog isn't available until after the first render AND after the dynamic chunk loads. Any user interactions during this window (e.g., quick add-to-cart clicks) produce no events since posthog is null. A synchronous top-level import with posthog.init() (as documented for React) would be more reliable. [MEDIUM]

Other completed criteria

  • API key loaded from VITE_PUBLIC_POSTHOG_PROJECT_TOKEN environment variable
  • Host loaded from VITE_PUBLIC_POSTHOG_HOST environment variable
  • Uses defaults: "2026-08-30" as recommended
  • Helpful dev-mode error messages when env vars are missing
  • Singleton pattern prevents double-initialization

PostHog insights and events ✅

Filename PostHog events Description
PostHogClientProvider.tsx (initialization) SDK init with error boundary for exception tracking
products.tsx product_added_to_cart Tracks add-to-cart from catalog with product_id, category, price, quantity, source
products..tsx product_added_to_cart Tracks add-to-cart from product detail page with same properties + source differentiation
cart.tsx cart_item_removed, cart_quantity_updated, checkout_started Full cart interaction tracking with item and cart-level properties
checkout.tsx order_completed Order completion with subtotal, order_total, item_count, currency; also uses logger

Issues

No issues.

Other completed criteria

  • Events represent real e-commerce user actions forming a complete shopping funnel
  • Events enable product insights: product_added_to_cart → checkout_started → order_completed is a clear funnel
  • All events include enriched contextual properties (product_id, category, price, quantity, currency)
  • No PII in event properties — only product and cart metadata
  • Consistent snake_case naming convention throughout
  • source property differentiates between catalog and detail page add-to-cart events
