Problem

  • Teams following the Next.js error tracking guide get server exceptions with no session replay link.
  • A request identified by tracing headers is captured under a random person.
  • Edge middleware errors are dropped, and on Next.js 14 the guide installs a hook that never runs.
  • Source: an end-to-end test of the wizard, whose agent follows this page, on four Next.js apps.

Changes

  • Browser init turns on capture_exceptions: true and tracing_headers in code, instead of pointing to a settings toggle.
  • The onRequestError snippet takes identity from the tracing headers, then the project's own cookie (fresh sessions only). It sends $session_id and request properties with captureExceptionImmediate, in Node.js and edge.
  • One posthog-node client per process, on globalThis, started in register().
  • Notes: capture in every error.tsx, and which errors never reach onRequestError (after(), proxy.ts on 16, Next.js 14).

How did you test this code?

Test rationale: no automated test covers onboarding snippet text, so the snippet was tested by running the wizard against it.

  • oxfmt 0.57.0 is clean, and the rendered snippet passes node --check. Typecheck, lint-staged and the onboarding UI render were not run: the worktree had no Python venv, so the commit skipped the pre-commit hook.
  • The same text, served to the wizard through context-mill's docs cache: on the Next.js 16 and 15 Pages apps, every request error arrived linked to the browser user and session.

The Next.js error tracking onboarding now turns on capture_exceptions and
tracing_headers in code, captures in every error.tsx, and its onRequestError
snippet reads the tracing headers and then the PostHog cookie (with a
fresh-session check), sends $session_id and request properties with
captureExceptionImmediate in both runtimes, and keeps one posthog-node
client per process, started from register(). It also notes the errors that
never reach onRequestError: after() callbacks, proxy.ts on Next.js 16, and
Next.js 14, which has no onRequestError.

What the toolbar ships to customer pages, measured from the esbuild output (minified, post-tree-shake). The eager set is the entry plus everything statically imported from it — fetched before any feature runs; deferred chunks load lazily. The eager guardrail is 5.72 MiB. Each output file must also stay below 10 MB, where CloudFront stops compressing it. The module boundary is enforced separately by check-toolbar-graph.

P2 · Bound the delivery timeout and retries in the request error hook

When the ingestion endpoint stalls, onRequestError now awaits network delivery with the SDK's default 10-second timeout and three retries. Next.js awaits this hook before completing error handling, so failed requests hang for tens of seconds and risk exceeding serverless execution limits. Configure a short requestTimeout and bounded fetchRetryCount for this capture path.
