The sourcing research found that for LessWrong, the Alignment Forum, pre-2022 EA Forum posts, most personal blogs, books and podcasts there is no licence and asking is the only lawful route. It also found that asking WELL is the cheapest risk reduction available, and costs one email. Eight items, each in the template because leaving it out is a known failure. The three that matter most: Say what the thing IS. They are consenting to a context, not to a reuse. A dark and often funny game is a different proposition from a documentary, and saying so plainly is the difference between consent and a surprise. Describe where it appears, concretely. "On the screen shown when a player's run ends" is the fact that matters, and burying it is how someone ends up feeling misled by a technically accurate request. State the default OUT LOUD: no reply means no use. Never "if I don't hear back I'll assume it's fine." The gate already encodes this as asked_no_reply, which is not a servable basis. The template also offers, unprompted, everything a person can ask for later: correction, different attribution, initials, anonymity, a note that their views have changed, or removal. Offering it before being asked is the difference between a permission request and a notification. Notes cover the cases that trip: 80,000 Hours transcripts need TWO permissions because their terms are explicitly restrictive; the Embedded Agency pair is co-authored so both Garrabrant and Demski get asked; the list is grouped by author so one message covers two or three quotes; and a warm introduction makes the easy-no line matter more rather than less, since it arrives carrying social weight a cold email does not.
