buster-based images moved to archive.debian.net #194

Open

Description

@yoe

Hi,

In order to save time in my ci setup, I install a few things using apt, rather than relying on Alien modules (in my case, Alien::ffmpeg) to download and compile software, which takes significantly longer.

On the images for the oldest perl that I support, 5.28, this has recently stopped working, as the images are based on Debian 11 'buster', which no longer lives on deb.debian.org but instead has moved to archive.debian.net.

While the fix for this is trivial (just s/deb.debian.org/archive.debian.net/ over /etc/apt/sources.list), and I can do that from my CI script, I think it would be better if the docker images were to be updated to use the new URL. This should theoretically be fairly trivially a simple rebuild with no changes to the Dockerfile as the buster images currently should already have the new URL baked in, though I haven't tested this myself.

    Hello,

    I don't think we are going to do that for all images that are hosted on Dockerhub. If you look at #161, you'll see that we are already part of the "heavy-hitters" on Dockerhub. Rebuilding all old images is not something we do. See also #188 for a more detailed response.

    This means, unfortunately, that for the time being, as we don't have images on GHCR, you would need to change the sources.list files yourself before you can properly use them.

    Hello @yoe , I remember you from my old Debian maintainer days 👋 Thanks for the report!

    As @waterkip says, we currently only support the Perl releases on current-supported Debian releases (Trixie, Bookworm, and Bullseye.) FWIW, I also checked the current buildpack-deps:buster base and these do not have the archive.debian.net source since these also have been stopped being built/supported by the Docker official-images team since July 2024:

    % docker run --rm -it buildpack-deps:buster cat /etc/apt/sources.list

    You might also be interested in the debian/eol images (https://oci.dag.dev/?repo=debian/eol), even if only as a convenient place to copy sources.list contents from (COPY --from=debian/eol:buster-slim /etc/apt/sources.list...).

    As of #215 we will also drop buster support entirely, including removal of reference Dockerfiles in eol/.
