fix(cli): refuse event triggers whose integration the owner has not connected - #9206
superset automations create and update now refuse to save an event trigger whose integration the caller has not connected. The error says what to do.
Why / Context
Linear, Slack, Sentry, Notion, Microsoft Teams and Google connections are per user. A trigger only fires for an owner who connected that integration, by design (#7317). The desktop editor shows "Requires connection" for such a trigger. The CLI saved it with no check, so an automation created from the CLI or by an agent could silently never fire. That happened to a Linear automation.
How It Works
missingConnectionError.ts maps each trigger kind to its connector through the shared TRIGGER_KIND_CONNECTOR. It reads integration.connectionStatus, the same query the desktop editor uses.
If a needed connector is not connected, the command throws before any mutation:
Error: These triggers would never fire: you have not connected Microsoft Teams
Hint: Connect Microsoft Teams in Settings → Integrations. Then run this command again.
An expired connection gets "Reconnect … in Settings → Integrations" instead.
In update the check runs before setEnabled, so a refused call changes nothing.
Schedule, webhook and GitHub triggers are never refused. If the status query fails, the save goes ahead instead of blocking.
Manual QA Checklist
automations create with a Microsoft Teams trigger and no Teams connection, run from the source CLI against prod: refused with the message above, and no automation was created.
automations update re-saving an existing Linear trigger with a live Linear connection, against prod: saves as before.
Expired connection path. Only unit tests cover it.
Testing
bun test src/commands/automations (in packages/cli): 14 pass. The new tests fail when the connection check is removed.
bun run typecheck (in packages/cli): clean
biome check on the changed files: clean
Design Decisions
Error instead of warning: a trigger that can never fire is not worth saving, and an error makes an agent pass the fix on to the user. The desktop editor still allows the save, because it offers an inline Connect button.
Hint points to Settings → Integrations, not superset plugins connect: the plugins command is internal-only, and plugin connections are separate from trigger connections.
Summary by cubic
Fixes superset automations create and update silently saving event triggers that can never fire because the caller hasn't connected the trigger's integration. The CLI now checks integration.connectionStatus before saving and refuses with a message telling the user to connect or reconnect in Settings → Integrations.
Refusal happens before any mutation, so a blocked update changes nothing.
A trigger pinned to an account the caller doesn't own, or to an expired account, is refused even when another account on the same integration is live.
Schedule, webhook, and GitHub triggers are never refused; a failed status check does not block the save.
Written for commit edbc37a. Summary will update on new commits.

Bug Fixes
Automation creation and updates now check that required integrations are connected before proceeding.
When a required integration is disconnected or needs reauthentication, the CLI reports which connection needs attention and how to resolve it.
The CLI also identifies when a pinned connection belongs to another account or needs reauthorization. Triggers that do not require an integration connection are unaffected.
…onnected
Linear and the other user-scoped connectors only deliver an event to the
automations of the member who connected them. `automations create` and
`update` saved such a trigger without checking, so an automation made from
the CLI or by an agent could never fire and nothing said why. The desktop
editor already flags this as "Requires connection".
Check `integration.connectionStatus` before saving and fail with the fix:
connect (or reconnect) the integration in Settings → Integrations, then
rerun. Triggers that need no connection (schedule, webhook, GitHub) are
never refused, and a failed status check does not block the save.

Walkthrough
Automation creation and update now validate connections for resolved triggers before proceeding. The validator reports missing, expired, or foreign pinned connections. It skips checks when required inputs or connection status are absent.
The helper checks pinned and unpinned trigger connections and returns connector-specific errors for missing, expired, or foreign pinned connections. Tests cover connection states and status query failures.
Check connections in create and update packages/cli/src/commands/automations/create/command.ts, packages/cli/src/commands/automations/update/command.ts
Both commands call the connection assertion after resolving triggers and before proceeding.

### Issue 1
packages/cli/src/commands/automations/missingConnectionError.ts:21-23
The check accepts a trigger pinned to an expired account when another account of the same provider is connected. `connectionStatus` reports the provider as connected if any account is live, but `saveTriggerSet` keeps the supplied `connectionId`. Events from the other account cannot fire that trigger, so re-saving it still succeeds without warning.
Check an explicit `connectionId` against the returned accounts and their `needsReauth` state before accepting the trigger.
### Issue 2
packages/cli/src/commands/automations/missingConnectionError.test.ts:8-13
These tests only call `missingConnectionError`. Removing either command's call to `assertTriggersConnected`, or moving the update check after `setEnabled`, leaves every new test passing.
Add command-level tests that refuse an unconnected trigger and assert that `create`, `update`, and `setEnabled` were not called. This would protect both the command checks and the promise that a refused update changes nothing.
Note: If this suggestion doesn't match your team's coding style, reply to this and let me know. I'll remember it for next time!

Summary
The CLI now checks personal integration connections before saving event triggers.
The CLI stops automation saves when event integrations are missing.
Acknowledged choices: Kitenite explicitly excludes schedule, webhook, and GitHub triggers and allows saves when the status query fails.

Review verdict: minor issues. The CLI change is correct and CI is green. But agents can still save triggers that never fire through the MCP tools, and the wording for an expired connection is wrong.
MCP path not covered. The check is in packages/cli/src/commands/automations/missingConnectionError.ts:40 only. packages/mcp/src/tools/automations/create.ts and update.ts still save unconnected triggers. Share the helper with them, or enforce it on the server with a desktop opt-out.
Expired-connection message contradicts itself.missingConnectionError.ts:34-35 prints "you have not connected Linear", then "Your Linear connection expired". Use a separate headline for needsReauth.
Pinned accounts not checked.missingConnectionError.ts:21-23 checks per connector. A trigger pinned (connectionId) to an expired account passes when another account on the same connector is live.
Tests: nothing tests the fail-open path of assertTriggersConnected, or that the check in update runs before setEnabled.
Verified at ff19a7bb: 14 tests pass and typecheck is clean. I ran the real assertTriggersConnected with a stubbed API for all six paths, and the fail-open path end to end from a cloud workspace. I could not verify refusal against the real API, because a cloud workspace cannot call connectionStatus.

Do not skip connection validation for trigger updates when no organization ID is set.
assertTriggersConnected returns early when organizationId is absent. In update, that branch has no organization check. A trigger update with no retargeting can reach automation.update.mutate with event triggers whose integration is not connected. The create command throws in this case, so the two commands behave differently. The config type allows an absent organization ID, and the inspected auth path does not block it. This is an edge case, because login normally stores an organization ID.
Reject trigger replacement when no organization is set, as create does:
This also refuses schedule- and webhook-only trigger replacements when no organization is set. Those updates previously succeeded. Narrow the guard to connector-backed trigger kinds if that behavior must stay.

A trigger pinned to an expired account passed while another account on the
same connector was live, and a pin to an account the caller does not own
passed too. Check the pinned account itself. An expired connection now says
so in the headline instead of "you have not connected".
Also covers the fail-open path of assertTriggersConnected.
When an invalid replacement trigger makes assertTriggersConnected reject, assert that neither setEnabled nor automation.update.mutate was called. The current helper tests do not exercise either mutation, so they would not detect validation moving after setEnabled.

Report a missing integration before a foreign pin.
If a pinned trigger has no entry in status for its connector, problemFor returns "foreignPin". The error tells the user to drop the pin or choose an existing account. Neither action connects the missing integration. If the user drops the pin, the next attempt instead reports "missing". Return "missing" when the connector has no status entry; reserve "foreignPin" for a pin absent from an existing connector’s accounts. The CLI accepts optional pins, and the status query can omit connectors with no visible accounts. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Report distinct problems on triggers for the same connector.
If two Linear triggers have different invalid pins, problems.has(connector) skips the second trigger after recording the first. The user can follow the reported fix and still have the save refused on the next attempt. Keep deduplication for identical messages, but retain distinct problems or identify each affected trigger. The CLI accepts a trigger array with multiple entries for one connector. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
