test(i18n): catch locale dict dumps and check explicit ids against English - #9191
#8953 shipped 11 Devs strings whose msgstr in all 16 catalogs was a Python dict of every locale, and the catalog integrity test passed. #9017 fixed the text; this makes the same slip fail CI.
The test now flags braces in a translation's plain text that its source does not have. It parses each message with Lingui's own compileMessageOrThrow, whose text hook sees every plain-text piece at every depth, so a dict dump inside one plural branch is caught too. A translation that does not parse also counts, so the test names its id.
Explicit-id messages (serverError.*) are checked against their English text instead of the id, so a dropped {plugin} or {entryPath} there no longer passes.
A small example test pins the checks: a whole-text dict dump, a dict dump inside one plural branch, a plural that lost its last }, and a dropped {name} behind the explicit id serverError.plugins.marketplaceBuiltinRemove are all rejected.
@lingui/message-utils is already a dev dependency of packages/i18n, so nothing new is added.
How I tested it
packages/i18n: bun run test passes (168/168). All 16 catalog tests stay green, so the parser check raises no false alarms on the real catalogs.
Red first, one break at a time: with the text hook never flagging braces, the dict dump passes; with a parse error counted as fine, the plural without its last } passes; with the English lookup returning the id, the dropped {name} passes; with the earlier block-skipping scan, the dict dump inside a plural branch passes. The example test fails in each case. Before feat(devs): live working state, an Activity tab, and translation fixes #9017, the catalog test was red on all 176 dumps.
Biome passes on the changed file, and tsc passes in packages/i18n.

Bug Fixes
Translation catalog checks now catch unmatched or unexpected braces while allowing valid ICU expressions and placeholders, including in dictionary-dump text.
Integrity errors compare translations against the English source text, including entries with explicit IDs that use the source translation or fall back to the message text.
Checks now detect missing placeholders in translations associated with explicit IDs, helping identify inconsistencies between translated messages and their English source.
…glish
ParadevAI#8953 shipped 11 Devs strings whose msgstr in all 16 catalogs was a
Python dict of every locale, and no check noticed; ParadevAI#9017 fixed the text.
The integrity test now flags braces a translation adds that its source
does not have, so the same slip fails CI. It was red on all 176 dumps
before that fix.
It also checks explicit-id messages (serverError.*) against their
English text instead of the id, so a dropped {plugin} or {entryPath}
there no longer passes.
A small example test pins the guard itself: a dict dump and a dropped
placeholder are rejected, and a nested plural still passes.

Walkthrough
The catalog integrity test now resolves English source text from the source catalog and compares locale translations against it. It detects stray or malformed braces and adds checks for dictionary-dump text, missing placeholders, and ICU messages.
Changes: Translation Catalog Integrity
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Source comparison and brace validation packages/i18n/test/catalog-integrity.test.ts
The test uses source catalog msgstr, falling back to msgid, as English source text. It compiles messages to detect stray braces and treats compilation errors as stray braces. Added assertions cover dictionary-dump braces, missing placeholders for explicit-ID messages, and malformed or plural ICU messages.
Missing placeholders may go undetected if the English translation also loses them. Fix or accept this limited check gap before merging.

### Issue 1
packages/i18n/test/catalog-integrity.test.ts:130-138
These examples still pass if two key changes break. The dropped-placeholder example calls `integrityError` directly, so it does not test the English lookup. The plural example has nested placeholders on both sides. Replacing `outsideIcu` with `stripIcu` leaves braces in both strings, which disables the new brace check.
Add an explicit-id fixture that goes through the English lookup, and assert that `outsideIcu` removes the whole nested plural. That would make the examples catch regressions in both changes.
Note: If this suggestion doesn't match your team's coding style, reply to this and let me know. I'll remember it for next time!

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.
Summary
The PR strengthens translation checks by rejecting added braces outside ICU blocks and comparing explicit IDs against their English text.
Catalog checks catch extra braces and compare keyed messages with English text.

The examples now go through the English lookup for an explicit id and
assert that the balanced scan drops a whole nested plural. Each fails if
its check regresses: a lookup that returns the id passes the dropped
{name}, and the old stripIcu scan leaves "other {# in {name}}}" behind.
stripIcu removes this complete select block, so removing {choice} from every translated branch leaves no placeholders to compare. The ICU structure still matches, and the integrity check returns no error. Parse ICU branches and compare their placeholders. This is a test-coverage improvement, not a current production failure.

Update the catalog integrity check around stripIcu and placeholders to inspect
placeholders within ICU branches instead of removing the entire select, plural,
or selectordinal block. Compare branch placeholders across translations so
removing a placeholder from any branch is detected.
Reject translation placeholders that the source lacks.
The brace check removes every {name} token before it tests for stray braces. The placeholder loop checks only the placeholders in the source. A translation can therefore add a placeholder that the source does not have. For source Delete account, the translation Supprimer le compte {name} passes both checks. The caller supplies no name, so Lingui renders that token as empty text. The check should flag the extra placeholder. Add this case to the existing rejection test.

Update the placeholder validation in integrityError to reject placeholders
present in the translation but absent from the source, reporting the extra
placeholder. Add this case to the existing rejection test so a translation such

Use the balanced scan for placeholder checks.
The new example checks outsideIcu, but integrityError still uses this regex through placeholders. The regex stops at the first nested }}, leaving later branches in the result.
For the English entry {matchCount, plural, one {{0}} other {{1}}}, a valid translation with only other {{1}} is rejected as missing {1}. Use a balanced scan here too, and test the case through integrityError. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update `placeholders`, used by `integrityError`, to use a balanced scan rather
than the nested-ICU regex so it excludes the entire ICU expression, including
all branches. Add an `integrityError` test where the English plural entry has a
valid translation containing only `other {{1}}`, and verify it is not rejected
as missing `{1}`.

Use msgid as the source for ordinary messages.
If the English msgstr drops {name}, this lookup also stops checking for {name} in every other locale. English is excluded from the locale loop, so the test does not catch that change either. The previous comparison against msgid caught the missing placeholder in other locales.
Use the English msgstr only for explicit IDs, and check ordinary English entries against their msgid. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The hand-written scan skipped whole ICU blocks, so a dict dump inside one
plural branch passed. compileMessageOrThrow hands every plain-text piece,
at every depth, to a hook; a brace there means broken text. A translation
that does not parse counts as broken too, so the test names its id.

Check formatted arguments as well as text.
For source Hello and translation Bonjour {price, number}, this check returns no error. The compiler passes only text tokens to the callback, and the other checks do not inspect number arguments. The previous brace scan rejected this translation. At runtime, the missing price renders as NaN. Compare formatted argument tokens against the source too. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
