Fixes #9099

Summary

  • GitHub HTTPS remotes with userinfo (https://user@github.com/..., https://user:token@github.com/...) are now recognized. Before this change, repo resolution failed with Repository at <path> has no GitHub remote.
  • Same fix in the shared parseGitHubRemote and in the two desktop copies of the pattern (normalizeGitHubRepoUrl, normalizeGitHubUrl).

Why / Context

Git, gh and GitHub accept userinfo in an HTTPS remote. Our HTTPS regex required github.com right after https://, so it returned null for these remotes. getGitHubRemotes then skipped them, and resolveGithubRepo threw. This also broke PR lookup and project setup.

How It Works

The HTTPS pattern gets an optional (?:[^@/]+@)? before the host. Because [^@/] cannot contain /, hosts like https://evil.com/@github.com/... and https://github.com.evil.com/... are still rejected. The returned URL is still built from owner and name only, so the username or token is never stored or shown.

Testing

  • New packages/shared/src/github-remote.test.ts (the regression test from the issue), plus a userinfo case in pull-request-url.test.ts.
  • Bun was not installed on the machine I worked on, so I did not run the suites, typecheck or lint locally. CI will run them. I checked the new regex with node: it matches both userinfo forms and a plain URL, and it rejects the two lookalike hosts above.

Summary by cubic

Accepts GitHub HTTPS remotes with a username or token (https://user@github.com/..., https://user:token@github.com/...) so repo resolution no longer fails with "has no GitHub remote." The username or token is dropped from the canonical URL and never stored.

  • The optional userinfo is allowed in parseGitHubRemote and the two desktop copies of the pattern (normalizeGitHubRepoUrl, normalizeGitHubUrl).
  • ?, #, and backslash are excluded from userinfo and the owner/repo captures, so lookalike URLs with @github.com in the query, fragment, or after a backslash, and paths like https://github.com/acme?next/foo, are rejected.

Written for commit 1f8ff67. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • HTTPS GitHub repository URLs containing credentials are now recognized and normalized without retaining credential information. URLs without credentials continue to work as before.
    • URLs from other sites that include a GitHub-looking address in their query are not treated as GitHub repository URLs.
    • GitHub URLs containing queries, fragments, or backslashes in repository details are rejected.

An origin like https://user@github.com/owner/repo.git (or user:token@)
is valid for git, gh and GitHub, but our HTTPS remote patterns required
github.com right after https://, so the remote was dropped and repo
resolution failed with "has no GitHub remote".

Allow an optional userinfo part in the shared parser and in the two
desktop copies of the same pattern. The canonical URL is still rebuilt
from owner and name, so the username or token is never stored.

Walkthrough

GitHub HTTPS URL parsing now accepts optional user information before github.com in shared and desktop utilities. The shared parser omits user information from returned repository URLs. Tests cover credential handling and rejection of URLs with query, fragment, or backslash characters.

Changes: GitHub HTTPS remote parsing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared remote parsing
packages/shared/src/github-remote.ts, packages/shared/src/github-remote.test.ts
parseGitHubRemote accepts HTTPS remotes with user information and returns repository details without user information in the normalized URL. Tests cover username-only and username-and-password forms, and reject URLs with queries, fragments, or backslashes.
Desktop URL normalization
apps/desktop/src/lib/trpc/routers/changes/utils/pull-request-url.ts, apps/desktop/src/lib/trpc/routers/changes/utils/pull-request-url.test.ts, apps/desktop/src/lib/trpc/routers/workspaces/utils/github/repo-context.ts
Desktop URL patterns accept user information before github.com. Tests cover credential removal and reject a non-GitHub URL containing a GitHub address in its query.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains what changed, why it was needed, how credentials are excluded from canonical URLs, the related issue, and the testing performed. It does not reproduce the template headings or checklist, but it provides the required information and is mostly complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#9099] requires HTTPS GitHub remotes with a username to resolve to the owner and repository. The shared parseGitHubRemote now accepts optional userinfo before github.com and returns a credential-free canonical URL. The shared regression test covers username and token forms. The desktop normalizers apply the same behavior for repository and pull-request handling.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed files support [#9099]. The regex updates implement userinfo support and reject query, fragment, backslash, and lookalike-host inputs. The added tests verify credential removal and rejection behavior. No unrelated change appears in the whole pull-request diff.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 5 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Apply the same userinfo character class as the shared parser so a URL
with @github.com in its query, fragment, or after a backslash is not
parsed as a GitHub remote.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Reject URL delimiters in all owner and repository captures.

The three HTTPS patterns accept ?, #, and \ inside owner or repository captures. They then return malformed canonical URLs. For example, https://github.com/acme?next/foo produces a URL whose pathname is only /acme, so extractNwoFromUrl can pass the wrong repository to GitHub.

Exclude these delimiters in all three patterns.

A query, fragment, or backslash in the path made the HTTPS patterns
return a malformed canonical URL, such as https://github.com/acme?next/foo.
