What & why

The "Workspace Setup" tab ends at a shell prompt whether setup succeeded or failed, so you have to close it by hand after every good run. This PR adds an opt-in setting that closes the tab when setup exits 0 and leaves it open when setup fails, so failures stay visible.

  • Setting: "Close Workspace Setup tab when setup succeeds" under Settings → Experimental, next to "Wait for workspace setup before starting agents". It is off by default. It is stored in local-db (migration 0060) and is in the CLI settings registry as closeSetupOnSuccess.
  • Report the result: the desktop sends closeSetupOnSuccess with workspaces.create. The new input field is optional, so older hosts ignore it. When it is on, the host appends a private OSC 777 marker to the setup command with &&: setup && printf '\033]777;superset-setup-succeeded\007'. This is the same shape as the existing 777;superset-shell-ready marker. The echoed command line contains the literal text \033, not an ESC byte, so the echo cannot match.
  • Close the tab: the host scans only that terminal's output for the marker (setup-succeeded-marker.ts). On a match, it closes the setup pane through the existing pane-layout bridge, the same path as superset panes close. That path also kills the session, so the desktop does not adopt the live shell into a new tab later. A fast setup can finish before the desktop writes the tab, so a missing pane is retried (30 × 1 s, close-setup-pane.ts).
  • Left alone:
    • setup fails: no marker is printed, so the tab stays open with the error;
    • an agent is chained into the setup terminal (wait-for-setup): the agent's tab must stay open;
    • no desktop app is attached to the host: no marker is appended.

Kept out of scope, as agreed on the issue: a failed badge in the sidebar and a config.json key.

Closes #8038

How I tested it

I ran the dev desktop app from this branch with CDP (RENDERER_REMOTE_DEBUG_PORT), signed in as the local dev admin. I used a test repo whose .superset/config.json setup echoes, sleeps, and fails when a flag file exists. I created each workspace through the new-workspace composer with "No agent".

  1. Setting off (baseline): setup succeeds and the Workspace Setup tab stays open at a prompt.
  2. Turned the setting on in Settings → Experimental: settings.getCloseSetupOnSuccess returns true.
  3. Setup succeeds: the tab closes. terminal.list for the workspace is empty and "Background processes" shows "Nothing running".
  4. Setup fails (flag file present): the tab stays open with the error, and the marker is not printed.
  5. Navigated to another workspace while setup ran (the workspace is not mounted): during setup the workspace had 1 terminal and 1 tab, afterwards 0 and 0. When I went back, the tab was not re-adopted.

The wait-for-setup + agent case is covered by a unit test only, not end to end.

Screenshots: to be added.

  • bun run lint: clean. bun run typecheck: 40/40. bun run check:i18n: passes, with translations for every locale.
  • Tests: the full host-service suite (2681 pass), the CLI settings tests, the i18n tests, and the related desktop tests. New tests cover the marker scanner (including a marker split across chunks and the echoed command line), the setup command builder (including the chained-agent case), and the close retry.

Checklist

  • PR title follows conventional commits (type(scope): subject)
  • bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass (CI fails on lint warnings too)
  • "Allow edits from maintainers" is checked on fork PRs
  • I have signed the CLA (the bot asks on your first PR)

Summary by cubic

Adds an opt-in Experimental setting, "Close Workspace Setup tab when setup succeeds", so a successful workspace setup no longer leaves the tab sitting at a shell prompt. When setup fails or the setting is off, behavior is unchanged and the tab stays open.

How it works

  • The setting lives under Settings → Experimental, defaults to off, and is stored in local-db via migration 0060.
  • The desktop sends closeSetupOnSuccess with workspaces.create; older hosts ignore the optional field.
  • When enabled, the host appends a marker command to the setup with &&, so the marker only prints on exit 0, and the host closes the pane when it sees it. Multi-line commands and commands with # comments are wrapped in a shell group so the marker isn't swallowed; newline commands are staged as a script so they aren't submitted line by line.
  • The close intent is stored on the terminal session row (host migration 0039), restored after a host restart, and the pane closer is registered once at host start.
  • Closing the pane also ends the session; the close is retried for 30 seconds because a fast setup can finish before the desktop writes the tab.
  • The close is skipped when an agent is chained into the setup terminal or when no desktop app is attached.

Written for commit b1ade97. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an experimental setting to automatically close the Workspace Setup tab after setup succeeds. The tab stays open if setup fails, so errors remain visible.
    • The setting is off by default and can be changed in Experimental Settings. It applies when creating workspaces and is available through settings search.
    • The preference is also available in the CLI settings registry, and the setting’s label and description are translated into supported languages.

Walkthrough

An opt-in setting controls whether the Workspace Setup pane closes after setup succeeds. The desktop passes the setting through workspace creation. The host service detects a success marker in terminal output and retries closing the matching pane.

Changes: Workspace Setup pane closing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Setting storage and controls
packages/local-db/drizzle/*, packages/local-db/src/schema/schema.ts, apps/desktop/src/shared/constants.ts, apps/desktop/src/lib/trpc/routers/settings/index.ts, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/settings/experimental/components/ExperimentalSettings/components/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/settings/utils/settings-search/settings-search.ts, packages/cli/src/lib/settings/registry.ts, packages/i18n/locales/*/messages.po
The setting defaults to false and is stored in the settings table. The settings router exposes read and write procedures. The experimental settings UI provides a searchable switch with optimistic updates. Locale files add the setting label and description.
Workspace creation request
apps/desktop/src/renderer/stores/workspace-creates/useWorkspaceCreates.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/workspaces/workspaces.ts
When enabled, the desktop includes closeSetupOnSuccess in worktree-create requests. The workspace creation route passes the value to setup-terminal startup.
Terminal success detection

A command emits a setup-success marker. Terminal sessions persist the close-on-success setting, scan output chunks, and invoke the optional callback when the marker is detected. Adoption restores the scanner for existing sessions.
Setup command and pane closure
packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/workspace-creation/shared/setup-terminal.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/workspace-creation/shared/close-setup-pane.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/workspace-creation/shared/setup-terminal.test.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/workspace-creation/shared/close-setup-pane.test.ts, packages/host-service/src/app.ts
When enabled and no chained command is supplied, setup command construction appends the marker. The registered callback retries pane lookup and closure for the matching terminal. The host service registers the callback when a browser bridge is configured.

Explanation

The description includes the required What & why, How I tested it, and Checklist sections. It explains the behavior, implementation, scope, test coverage, and reported validation results. Screenshots are noted as pending, and the maintainer-edit checkbox is unchecked, but these do not make the description incomplete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#8038] Requirement: an opt-in option that closes the setup pane when the joined setup command exits 0, and leaves it open on non-zero exit. The issue allows a config key or a desktop setting. Evidence: (1) The desktop setting closeSetupOnSuccess is added under Settings → Experimental, defaults to false (DEFAULT_CLOSE_SETUP_ON_SUCCESS), is stored in local-db (migration 0060), and is sent with workspaces.create. (2) When enabled, appendSetupSucceededMarker appends a private OSC 777 marker with && to the setup command. The marker prints only on exit 0. Multi-line and #-comment commands are grouped so the marker is not swallowed. (3) The host scanner (createSetupSucceededScanner) detects the marker in the terminal output. The host then calls closeSetupPane, which closes the pane matching terminalId through the existing pane-layout bridge. (4) Non-zero exit prints no marker, so the pane stays open. The close is skipped when an agent is chained into setup or no desktop app is attached. The marker flag is gated by closeOnSetupSuccess, so default setups keep the prior queueing path (stageMultiline is passed only when the option is on). Unit tests cover marker matching, failed commands, chained agents, and close retries. The PR also reports an end-to-end run for success and failure. The suggested failed-state sidebar badge is non-mandatory ('ideally') and is excluded by the PR. Requirements are met at the reviewed head.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed areas connect to #8038's requested behavior. Desktop: the setting component, settings router procedures, settings-search entry, useWorkspaceCreates payload field, shared constant, and localized strings expose and persist the opt-in. CLI: the settings registry entry closeSetupOnSuccess exposes the same setting. Host service: the optional workspaces.create input, setup-terminal gating (shouldCloseOnSuccess), setup-succeeded marker module, terminal session scanner and persistence, closeSetupPane retry, and the pane closer registration in app.ts implement the close path. Schema changes (local-db 0060, host-service 0039, and their snapshots and journals) store the setting and the per-session close intent. The terminal.ts change that stages multi-line commands as scripts is gated by closeOnSetupSuccess, so it does not alter default setup behavior. Translation entries cover the new UI strings. No unrelated feature or unrelated configuration key is introduced. The failed-state sidebar badge and config.json key named in the PR as excluded are not present.

[Medium impact] The change affects desktop workspace setup and its terminal panes when users opt in.

The PR appears safe to merge, with non-blocking gaps for multiline commands and setup runs that survive a host restart.

Findings

  1. P2 Command endings break automatic closing ▶
  2. P2 Restart loses automatic closing ▶
Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/workspace-creation/shared/setup-terminal.ts:150
Appending ` && ` directly can break valid setup commands. A trailing newline puts `&&` at the start of a new line, causing invalid shell syntax. An inline comment, such as `bun install # dependencies`, comments out the success marker instead. The tab then stays open despite the setting.

Preserve command boundaries when adding the success check, and add tests for trailing newlines and comments.

### Issue 2
packages/host-service/src/terminal/terminal.ts:3337-3342
When the host restarts during setup, the terminal survives but its close-on-success watch does not. `setupSucceededWatch` depends on the callback supplied during workspace creation. Reconnection adopts the terminal without that callback, so the host ignores its later success marker and leaves the tab open.

Save the close-on-success intent with the terminal and restore the watch when adopting it.

---

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Summary

Adds an opt-in setting to close successful Workspace Setup tabs.

  • Desktop users can choose to close the Workspace Setup tab after setup succeeds.
  • Successful standalone setup runs close their own terminal pane.

Add an opt-in Experimental setting, "Close Workspace Setup tab when setup
succeeds". When it is on, the host appends a private OSC 777 marker to the
setup command with `&&`, so it prints only on exit 0. The host scans that
terminal's output for the marker, then closes the setup pane through the
existing pane-layout bridge, which also ends the session. A failed setup
prints no marker, so the tab stays open with the error.

The close is skipped when an agent is chained into the setup terminal
(wait-for-setup) and when no desktop app is attached to the host. A missing
pane is retried, because a fast setup can finish before the desktop writes
the tab.

Refs ParadevAI#8038
…gs and restarts

- Group a multi-line setup or one with a `# comment` before appending the
success marker, so neither swallows it. The group opens on the first line
(`{ ` or fish `begin; `) and closes on its own line. A command with a
newline is staged as a script, because a typed newline submits the first
line at once and an echo retype would run it twice.
- Store the close-on-success intent on the terminal session row
(host migration 0039) and restore the watch when the session is adopted,
so a host restart during setup still closes the tab. The pane closer is
registered once at host start instead of per request.
- Write the setting to the row getSettings() reads, like setLanguage.
- Reuse each catalog's existing term for "Workspace Setup" in the label.

Use a session-bound setup-success signal.

A configured setup command can print the fixed marker and then fail. The scanner treats those bytes as success and invokes the pane-close path. Generate an unpredictable per-session token, or authenticate the marker producer, and use the same persisted token in the wrapper and scanner, including adopted sessions. Keep the pane-closure logic unchanged.
