User description

on top of #488.

the prune only held back days with no complete result, but a day with a result that hasn't finalized is still re-derived. day D's night starts the evening before, so once that evening was pruned a re-derive scored half the night, overwrote the good row, then finalized it.

now a day counts as pending until it's finalized, and the hold sits at the start of its night search (previous noon) instead of its own midnight. still capped by _maxRawHoldDays. also fixed the _finalizationSec comment: it's 48 h past the day's last record, so ~72 h after the day starts.

Summary by Sourcery

Protect unfinalized day results during raw-data pruning while retaining bounded, midnight-aligned cleanup.

Bug Fixes:

  • Prevent raw-data pruning from causing unfinalized days to be re-derived from incomplete nights and overwriting complete results.

Enhancements:

  • Base raw retention holds on day finalization and preserve the preceding evening required for night derivation while keeping the hold bounded and aligned to local midnights.
  • Track the highest applied raw-prune cutoff and adjust device charts to include the oldest retained day.

Tests:

  • Add coverage for finalized-day pruning, preceding-evening protection, bounded retention holds, forward-only prune cursors, and device chart bounds.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Raw data is retained for every day that has not been finalized, preventing pending data from being pruned based only on whether a derived result exists.
    • Pruning now respects a bounded retention window and local-day boundaries.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Raw-data pruning now identifies pending days by finalization status. It holds deletion at the oldest pending day’s derive-window start, subject to a 14-day maximum hold and local-midnight rounding.

Changes

Raw retention

Layer / File(s) Summary
Finalization-aware pruning
lib/compute/derivation_engine.dart
The pruning cutoff now uses finalized day IDs. It treats every non-finalized raw day as pending and uses the oldest pending day’s previous-noon derive-window start, bounded by the 14-day maximum hold and rounded down to local midnight. Comments now describe finalization and the data edge relative to the day’s last record.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: mistral-vibe, droptabl

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to dcc8c

Raw data can remain stored for nearly a day beyond the configured retention cap in some cases. This is bounded, but correct the cutoff rounding before merging to preserve the cap.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to dcc8c

The change better protects unfinished results without adding deletion authority. Cleanup remains transactional, but retention is bounded at whole-day granularity and cannot restore data already deleted.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The inspected cleanup affects local decoded RR, decoded one-hertz, samples, events, selected band events, and raw-archive thinning. These existing sinks inherit the changed cutoff; no additional deletion sink was introduced.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The public helper returns a cutoff without database side effects. Private pruning orchestration obtains timestamps, raw-day labels, and finalized identities from LocalDb rather than accepting caller-supplied deletion targets.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Transactional deletion and cursor advancement prevent a failed transaction from recording cleanup progress without its associated deletions. The static running latch and awaited work provide same-isolate ordering; separate-isolate or process exclusion was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define the retention ceiling explicitly as a whole-day policy or an elapsed-time maximum. If an exact privacy ceiling is required, reconcile midnight alignment with that requirement rather than treating the 14-day floor as an exact deletion deadline.

Reviewer's Guide

The PR makes raw retention finalization-aware: pruning holds substrate until pending days are finalized, cuts only at local midnight while preserving the prior-noon night-search window, and records a monotonic prune boundary. Re-derivation paths detect truncated windows and preserve existing full-night results, with corresponding chart behavior and regression tests updated.

Change Details Files
Raw pruning now waits for finalization and preserves the full derivation window of pending days.
  • Use finalized day IDs, rather than merely derived results, to identify pending work.
  • Move the hold barrier to the previous-noon start of the oldest pending day’s night search.
  • Keep the hold bounded by the maximum raw-hold duration and normalize all prune cutoffs to local midnight.
  • Persist a monotonic prune cursor transactionally with deletion.
lib/compute/derivation_engine.dart
lib/data/db.dart
Re-derivation is prevented from replacing valid results with data from a prune-truncated night.
  • Exclude recent days whose derivation windows precede the recorded prune boundary from rescan.
  • Decline derivation when pruning truncated the window, while allowing imports and sufficiently late manual/confirmed sleep onsets.
  • Apply the protection across algorithm bumps, forced derives, overrides, and rescans.
lib/compute/derivation_engine.dart
Retention and chart-boundary behavior now treats pruning as whole-day deletion.
  • Mark the oldest retained day as unbounded unless the entire calendar day predates the oldest retained record.
  • Update finalization and pruning documentation to reflect the last-record-based timing and finalized-state gate.
lib/compute/derivation_engine.dart
lib/data/local_repository_impl.dart
Add regression coverage for finalization-aware pruning, truncated-window protection, cursor monotonicity, and chart boundaries.

Keep the rounded cutoff at or after the 14-day floor.

When a pending day makes the barrier reach the 14-day floor, rounding that floor down to local midnight can retain rows older than 14 days. At local noon, the cutoff can retain rows that are 14 days and 12 hours old; the overrun can approach one local day. Round the floor up to the next local midnight when the returned cutoff would cross it. This keeps the cutoff on a whole-day boundary.

Suggested fix
-    return _localDayStartOf(barrier < cutoffSec ? barrier : cutoffSec);
+    final cutoff = _localDayStartOf(barrier < cutoffSec ? barrier : cutoffSec);

+        DateTime.fromMillisecondsSinceEpoch(maxHoldFloor * 1000),
+      );
+      return _localNextDayLabelToSec(floorDay);
+    }
+    return cutoff;
