This PR lays the groundwork for supporting multiple Lucene versions in the same release. It doesn't add any new Lucene versions and still releases only the Lucene 10.2 jar, but it creates the infrastructure for adding new versions in the future, adds backward compatibility tests, and makes sure the jar can still be loaded on JDK 21, where it builds indexes on the CPU only.

The main code change is the replacement of the reflection-based LuceneProvider with the new CuVSCodecs class as the main entry point into the cuVS-Lucene ecosystem. LuceneProvider is now deprecated but will still be supported with Lucene 10.2.

The biggest structural change is that each supported Lucene version will get a separate Maven module with its version-specific pieces. This PR splits java/cuvs-lucene/src into java/cuvs-lucene/src with the shared code and java/cuvs-lucene/lucene-10.2/src with the Lucene 10.2-specific pieces. Every version-specific module will have its own LuceneCompat class, which isolates the calls whose signature or location differs between Lucene releases, so that the shared code compiles against every supported version. The artifact is now published as cuvs-lucene-10.2, and the old cuvs-lucene coordinates are relocated to it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Lucene 10.2 support with version-specific Java artifacts. Runtime checks now report when an artifact is used with an incompatible Lucene version.
    • Added a unified codec factory for accelerated HNSW, quantized HNSW, and GPU search codecs.
    • Added JDK 21 support for CPU-based accelerated HNSW; GPU acceleration requires JDK 22 or newer.
  • Documentation
    • Updated Java installation, codec usage, compatibility, and migration guidance for the new artifact versions and factory API.

The pull request adds Lucene 10.2 versioned artifacts, the CuVSCodecs factory API, Lucene compatibility checks, deferred codec failures, JDK 21 testing, back-compatibility tests, and updated documentation and build workflows.

Changes: Versioned Lucene build and CI

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build and CI updates
.github/workflows/*, build.sh, ci/*, dependencies.yaml
Build and test workflows now support nested Lucene module targets, JDK 21 testing, versioned artifact restoration, and Maven --fail-at-end execution.
Maven module structure
java/cuvs-lucene/pom.xml, java/cuvs-lucene/lucene-10.2/*, java/cuvs-lucene/relocation/*
The project now builds a Lucene 10.2 artifact through an aggregator and provides relocation from the legacy artifact coordinates.
Compatibility and codec runtime
java/cuvs-lucene/src/main/java/com/nvidia/cuvs/lucene/*
CuVSCodecs, LuceneCompat, LuceneVersionGuard, and CuVSFilterCodec provide release-specific codec creation, compatibility checks, direct Lucene format access, and deferred unavailable-resource errors.
Back-compatibility validation
java/cuvs-lucene/src/test/backcompat/*, java/cuvs-lucene/src/test/java/com/nvidia/cuvs/lucene/TestBackCompat*.java
Tests and utilities generate deterministic index archives, validate released indexes, test upgrades, and verify codec registration and unavailable-component behavior.
Factory API adoption
examples/java/cuvs-lucene/*, java/cuvs-lucene/bench/*, java/cuvs-lucene/src/test/*
Examples, benchmarks, and tests now use CuVSCodecs factory methods instead of constructing concrete codec classes directly.
Documentation and API references
fern/*, java/cuvs-lucene/README.md, java/cuvs-lucene/src/test/resources/backcompat/README.md
Documentation now covers versioned artifacts, JDK 21 CPU fallback, JDK 22 GPU requirements, factory methods, Lucene mismatch handling, and updated API source references.

java/cuvs-lucene/src/test/backcompat/GenerateReleasedIndices.java: 1

104-109: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Delete the temporary index directory after zipping.

write creates a temp directory with Files.createTempDirectory("backcompat") and never deletes it. Each run leaves one directory per generated archive. The leak is small, because this is a manual developer tool. The fix is a cleanup in a finally block.

Proposed fix
     Path indexDir = Files.createTempDirectory("backcompat");
-    writeIndex(indexDir, codec);
-    zip(indexDir, outDir.resolve(fileName));
+    try {
+      writeIndex(indexDir, codec);
+      zip(indexDir, outDir.resolve(fileName));
+    } finally {
+      try (var paths = Files.walk(indexDir)) {
+        paths.sorted(java.util.Comparator.reverseOrder()).forEach(p -> p.toFile().delete());
+      }

Validate zip entry names before extraction.

targetDir.resolve(entry.getName()) accepts names such as ../x. The input is a checked-in test fixture, so the risk is low. A bad or tampered archive could still write outside the temp directory. Normalize the path and check that it stays inside targetDir.

Proposed fix
-        Files.copy(in, targetDir.resolve(entry.getName()));

Until 26.10 the artifact was called `cuvs-lucene`; those coordinates now relocate to `cuvs-lucene-10.2`.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Correct the relocation cutoff.

Line 57 says the cuvs-lucene coordinates ended with 26.10. The release guidance in fern/pages/installation/java.md and the PR objective says releases before 26.12 used those coordinates. Use the same cutoff here so readers can identify which releases require the migration.

As per the documentation path instructions, “Version numbers, parameter types, and terminology match code.”
