Single-partition CAGRA search computes the filtering rate from the filter bitset when the caller does not set one, and MULTI_CTA enlarges itopk_size for selective filters accordingly. The multi-partition search skipped this, so a selective per-partition filter searched with the unadjusted itopk_size and could return fewer than k neighbors although every partition held more than k rows passing the filter. cuvs-lucene then routes the query back to per-segment search, which made TestMultiSegmentGPUFilterConcurrency flaky. Derive the rate from the per-partition bitsets, sizing the shared plan for the most selective partition that accepts any row. Also limit topK in TestCuVSGaps.testVectorSearchWithAlternatingDocuments to the number of documents that have vectors.

This code is copy of the single-cta branch, right? Could you please put this in a separate helper function instead?

Good catch — done. I added a small detail::clamp_filtering_rate helper in cagra.cuh and used it in the single-partition bitset path, the multi-partition path, and the udf_filter path, which had the same clamp; how each path derives the rate stays where it is, since the multi-partition one takes a max over per-partition counts.

Workstream C of the flaky-CI sweep (#2783). The cuvs-lucene "missing results" flakes were the most frequent group in the 5-week window (~20 hits, amd64 and arm64). The hits after #2612 are all TestMultiSegmentGPUFilterConcurrency.filteredSearchesTakeTheMultiPartitionGpuPath failing with expected:<24> but was:<23>: a filtered multi-partition CAGRA search returns fewer than k hits, so the query leaves the GPU path (test, fallback).
- Root cause: the multi-partition
cagra::searchoverload never derivedfiltering_ratefrom the partition bitsets, so it stayed at the default-1and MULTI_CTA never enlargeditopk_sizefor a selective filter. Single-partition bitset search does this (cagra.cuh). - Fix: compute the rate per partition, size the shared plan for the most selective partition that still accepts a row, and apply the same 0.999 cap as the single-partition path.
- Evidence (reproducer, verification, on #2785): short filtered multi-partition queries went from 9/18,432 (run 38062855918) to 0/73,728 (run 38065997981). Replaying the failing CI seeds went from 9/36 failures to 0/128.
- The
TestCuVSGapschange is a separate, deterministic test bug (see the inline comment). - Out of scope: SINGLE_CTA never adjusts
itopk_sizefor the filtering rate, in single-partition search either. AUTO only picks SINGLE_CTA here when there are at least 2x SM-count (query, partition) CTAs.

This is the actual fix. Before, this branch passed params straight through, so filtering_rate stayed at its default of -1 (cagra.hpp says it is "automatically calculated when possible"). The rate only matters in adjust_search_params (search_plan.cuh). For MULTI_CTA with 0 < rate < 1, that function sets itopk = topk/(1-rate) + (itopk-topk)/sqrt(1-rate), rounded up to a multiple of 32. With the rate left at -1, a filter that keeps ~4% of each partition ran with itopk_size 32 instead of ~352 (see the #2783 comment). The search then sometimes found fewer than k rows that pass the filter.
The block mirrors the single-partition bitset path (cagra.cuh), and it is skipped when the caller sets filtering_rate explicitly.

Every partition shares one plan, built from the same params (MULTI_CTA plan), so I need a single rate. I take the max over partitions that have a bitset, and I skip two cases:
- Partitions without a bitset have rate 0, because an empty view means accept-all.
- Partitions whose bitset accepts no rows return nothing whatever the
itopk_size. If they counted, the rate would hit the 0.999 cap and inflate the plan for nothing.
Question for reviewers: Is sizing for the most selective non-empty partition the right policy? The per-partition MULTI_CTA workspace is num_partitions * max_queries * num_cta_per_query * itopk_size (here), so one very selective partition makes every partition search with a much larger itopk_size. The alternatives I see are a row-weighted mean, which is cheaper but under-sizes the selective partition (the failure mode fixed here), or a per-partition itopk_size. That would need per-partition plans or kernel changes.

The view is rebuilt with length min(n_rows, v.size()), so only this partition's rows are counted. If a caller passes a bitset longer than the partition, the padding bits would otherwise lower the rate.
Question for reviewers: bitset_view::count(res) launches a popcount and then calls update_host + sync_stream, so this adds one host-synchronous round trip per filtered partition on every search call when filtering_rate < 0. The single-partition path pays the same cost once (cagra.cuh). Is that acceptable here, or should I count all partitions into one device buffer and sync once? Callers like cuvs-lucene could also pass the rate explicitly, since they already know each filter's cardinality.

Same clamp as the single-partition path (cagra.cuh). That clamp dates from #509, which added the automatic itopk_size adjustment. Because the formula divides by 1 - rate, the 0.999 cap bounds the adjusted itopk_size at about 1000 * topk + 31.6 * (itopk - topk).
Question for reviewers: Should 0.0 / 0.999 become one named constant (or a small helper that returns the clamped rate from a set-bit count and n_rows), shared by both paths? I copied them to keep this PR minimal.

Regression test with the shape of the Lucene failure: 4 partitions x 500 rows, each keeping 1 row in 24 (~21 rows, more than k=10), and MULTI_CTA with itopk_size = k (setup). In CI on #2785, with the rate adjustment off, 9-13 of 500 queries came back short at recall 0.92. With it on, 0/500 were short at recall 1.0 (#2783 comment). The existing AnnCagraMultiPartitionTest cases still pass.

This is a separate test bug that came up in the same triage. Only even-numbered documents get a vector, so for a small datasetSize the random topK can exceed the number of vectors. Seed BBE2A1CCC7772A7F fails every time (59 vs 53). This is the same fix #2709 made in TestCuVSAcceleratedHNSWGaps (main).
Filtered multi-partition CAGRA search never derived
filtering_ratefrom the per-partition bitsets, unlike single-partition search. So MULTI_CTA did not enlargeitopk_sizefor selective filters, and could return fewer than k neighbors even when every partition held more than k rows passing the filter. cuvs-lucene then falls back to per-segment search, which madeTestMultiSegmentGPUFilterConcurrency.filteredSearchesTakeTheMultiPartitionGpuPathflaky (#2736): 5 CI failures (expected:<24> but was:<23>) since 2026-09-26. The older missing-result failures inTestCuVSGaps.testVectorSearchWithFilterAndAlternatingDocumentsandTestCuVSDeletedDocumentsall predate #2612 (2026-09-17) and have not recurred, so this PR does not target them. The rate is now computed per partition, and the shared plan is sized for the most selective partition that accepts any row. A new C++ test covers this case: before the fix, 9-13 of 500 queries returned < k neighbors at recall 0.92; after the fix, 0 queries were short and recall was 1.0.
Also caps topK in
TestCuVSGaps.testVectorSearchWithAlternatingDocumentsat the number of documents with vectors. It failed deterministically for seeds that index fewer vectors than topK, the same issue #2709 fixed for the HNSW gaps test.Closes #2736. Reproduction and verification: #2785 (see #2783). Replaying the failing CI seeds of
TestMultiSegmentGPUFilterConcurrencyfailed 9/36 runs before the fix and 0/128 after; with random seeds, 1/80 before and 0/160 after.
