fix: isolate NOOA interactive usage per invocation - #453

The Deep Agents adapter summed usage_metadata from the AI messages that reached graph state through the updates stream. Three cases came out wrong: - Deep Agents adds SummarizationMiddleware to every agent and subagent. Its summary call returns only text, so the summary model's message and usage never enter graph state, and an invocation that summarized under-reported input, output and total tokens. - When the invocation raised, including GraphRecursionError, the adapter returned no messages, so usage was None even though model calls had finished. - A count was summed over the calls that reported it and returned as known. ChatOpenAI also turns an omitted Chat Completions count into 0 and derives a missing total, so a partial provider report came out as measured zeros. The adapter now records usage from LangChain's chat-model callbacks, which fire for every chat-model call that runs in the adapter process: the main agent, declarative subagents and summarization. Agent Protocol subagents run remotely and are not included. A new recorder is created for each invocation, so earlier turns are never counted again. It outlives an exception, so a failed invocation still reports the fields that every counted call reported. Each token count and the cost are known only when every counted call in the invocation reported them, and an explicit zero stays a known zero. A request the provider rejects with a 4xx status (other than 408) contributes no usage. A 5xx response, timeout, cancellation or unfinished call leaves the invocation's counts and cost unknown, because the provider may have done work without reporting usage. OpenAI SDK retries happen inside one LangChain call, so a 5xx the SDK retries to success is not visible to the recorder, and only the final response's reported usage counts. When a response carries OpenAI-shaped raw usage, the raw counts decide what was reported: an omitted count stays unknown, the provider's total is used when present, and a derived total counts only when input and output were both reported. The graph tests run the real Deep Agents graph and ChatOpenAI against a scripted Chat Completions endpoint for summarization, parallel task subagents, 400, 408, 503 and timeout failures, the recursion limit, partial reports and explicit zeros. Separate ChatOpenAI.with_retry tests cover 429 then success and 503 then success. The existing usage tests now produce their messages through a LangChain chat-model call so the callbacks fire. NOOA 0.0.10 emits token_usage events only for CompletionClient. ResponsesClient returns usage on each response but does not feed the task token accumulator, so Fabric reported input, output and total tokens as zero for Responses client runs. When the selected model is a ResponsesClient, wrap its synchronous and asynchronous calls and collect each returned usage report in an invocation-scoped ContextVar. Sum provider-reported input, cached-input, output and total tokens. If any returned report omits a counter, leave that dimension unknown. Preserve explicit zeros and mark input tokens as including cached tokens. The CompletionClient path is unchanged. Tests drive the real ResponsesClient directly with queued LiteLLM responses while leaving NOOA's accumulator unpatched. They cover multi-call sums, explicit zeros, missing usage, realistic missing cached-token details, and a defensive summing case for an omitted output count. The Responses usage tests drove only acall, and each one started a fresh runtime. The adapter also wraps the synchronous call, and a persistent runtime serves many invocations with the same wrapped client, so neither path was pinned down. The BenchAgent double now also drains a queue of synchronous replies through ResponsesClient.call, and a new test checks that a sync call's counters reach the invocation usage. A second test invokes one runtime twice with different replies and checks each result's usage on its own, so usage from the first invocation cannot carry over into the second. The interactive NOOA adapter returned no token usage, so run results for CodingAgent and other registered InteractiveAgent targets had no input, output, or total counts even though NOOA's model clients return them on every call. Each invocation now owns the calls that it and the tasks it starts make, through a context variable that asyncio tasks inherit. The adapter wraps the model clients it builds and sums the usage of the owned calls, including on failed invocations. A call that returns after its invocation ended is dropped, so it never counts toward a later invocation. When the last turn starts NOOA's history summary, the adapter waits for it up to 120 seconds or the invocation deadline, whichever is sooner. Usage is unknown if a summary, model call or queue job that the invocation started is still running at return; the adapter never cancels that work. The adapter picks the parser from the client type it built. LiteLLM zero-fills missing Chat Completions prompt, completion and total counts, so those zeros are unknown; a reported cached-token 0 stays 0. Responses API counts are kept as returned. A count that any call omits stays unknown. Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>

LangChain carries cache reads per model call in usage_metadata.input_token_details.cache_read, and OpenAI raw usage carries them in prompt_tokens_details.cached_tokens, but the adapter never reported cached_input_tokens. Sum cached input per call with the same rule as the other counts: one call without a cache count leaves the sum unknown, and a reported 0 stays 0. Raw OpenAI usage is read first because ChatOpenAI renames the cache key for priority and flex service tiers. Report input_tokens_include_cache=True whenever input tokens are known. LangChain's UsageMetadata.input_tokens counts every input token type; langchain-anthropic adds cache reads and writes back into it, and OpenAI's prompt_tokens already includes cached tokens. The adapter drops a model call that the provider rejects with a 4xx status other than 408, because the provider spent no tokens on it. When every call was rejected, or no call started, the call list was empty and the usage was reported as unknown, although the invocation provably spent no tokens. The adapter now reports 0 for every token count and the cost in that case. Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>
Deep Agents routes a subagent spec with graph_id to its async subagent middleware, which starts and updates tasks on a remote Agent Protocol server. Those model calls never reach the adapter's callbacks, so the reported counts left them out while appearing complete. The adapter blocked such subagents only when a tools policy was configured. When the configured subagents include one with graph_id, the adapter now reports the invocation's token counts and cost as unknown. The local sums stay in output.usage. Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>
The usage notes said that after a 5xx response, timeout, or cancelled call the provider may have done work. The reason the counts stay unknown is narrower: the provider may have billed the call without reporting usage. The README, the recorder docstring, and a test comment now say that. …gent The adapter reports 0 when its callbacks observed no billed model call. That 0 holds for the invocation only when every model call runs through those callbacks. Deep Agents runs declarative subagents and summarization inside the graph, where the run config's callbacks reach them, but an Agent Protocol subagent (graph_id) runs on a remote server that the callbacks never see. The adapter already reports unknown usage for a runtime with such a subagent; this test pins that for an invocation whose only observed call was rejected, and the docstring and README state the condition. 1221-1224: 🎯 Functional CorrectnessThe documented
total_tokensrule matches core normalization. The concern does not hold forresult.model_usage.total_tokens.Core normalization sets the normalized total to input plus output.
usage_normalization.rs:457assignsobservations[TOTAL] = add(observations[INPUT], observations[OUTPUT]). The field doc atusage_normalization.rs:32-33says "Normalized input plus output, not the provider's independent raw total."model_usage.rs:322-336asserts that a rawtotal_tokensof 999, with input 100 and output 5, yields a normalized total of 105 while the raw 999 stays inusage.total_tokens.model_usage.rs:348and:629assert that the total is null when the input count is unknown or overflows. The paragraph's statement that the total requires known input plus output therefore describes the core behavior, and the paragraph's statement that the independent raw total remains inresult.usagealso matches. The reducer fixtures describe the raw aggregate, not
model_usage.reducer-cases.jsoncontains the casespartial_output_independent_total(line 58) andmixed_input_conventions(line 188). The TypeScript reducer copies its reported aggregate intoresult.usage, which is the raw total that the paragraph says stays independent (usage.ts:189-192). A reducer-level independent total is consistent with that documentation. The comment compares the reducer's raw total with the core normalized total, and these are different fields. The core conformance loop at
model_usage.rs:281-295readstests/fixtures/usage_accounting/conformance.json, notreducer-cases.json. The comment's claim that core tests use the reducer fixtures is therefore not supported.I did not inspect the
expectedvalues of the two reducer cases (305 and 204). This does not affect the verdict, because those values would concern the raw reducer total, which the documentation already separates frommodel_usage. The doc text does not need to change.

Overview
NOOA InteractiveAgent can start model work that finishes after its dispatcher invocation returns. Reading shared counters later can assign that work to the wrong invocation.
Give each invocation its own collector scope. Calls and background work keep the invocation that started them, while returned snapshots stay fixed and incomplete work leaves an explicit gap.
Dependencies: #441 supplies the NOOA model-response collector and includes #442 shared accounting. The diff against
mainincludes unmerged prerequisites.Details
Use the model clients and raw-response collector supplied by #441. Read managed JSON HTTP reports before LiteLLM fills omitted fields. Shared accounting in #442 normalizes the evidence.
Copied task contexts retain the initiating owner. Detect queue jobs and history summaries started by the invocation even before their first model call. If they remain unfinished, preserve observations without claiming complete totals. Scheduling is unchanged; background jobs are not cancelled to manufacture completeness.
A pre-existing job without an invocation owner leaves coverage unverified if it overlaps the current invocation. Its tokens are not assigned to that invocation. Custom targets that make no managed call also remain unknown because their factories can create other clients.
Streaming and unmanaged transports retain #441's coverage limits. Independently reported cache and total fields remain available; provider cost is not inferred from tokens or HTTP status.
Validation
The TypeScript adapter checks remain blocked by the shared dependency audit tracked in #484.
Regression tests cover copied invocation contexts, late calls, pending background work and calls with no invocation owner. They check that an already-running unowned call leaves a coverage gap rather than assigning its tokens to the new invocation.
Where should the reviewer start?
Start with the invocation scope in
adapters/python/nooa/src/nemo_fabric_adapters/nooa/adapter.py. Then review copied-context, late-call and unfinished-background-work cases intests/adapters/test_nooa_usage_accounting.py.Related Issues: (use one of the action keywords Closes / Fixes / Resolves / Relates to)
