Overview

When NOOA BenchAgent reports a task as failed, Fabric drops the usage already collected for it. This leaves failed-task tokens out of run totals.

This change keeps that usage on the failed result for both client types. The adapter contract already asks adapters to keep available usage on unsuccessful results. Counting rules and successful results are unchanged.

Details

  • Preserve the already collected usage when BenchAgent returns success: false, including when an unrecovered task exception produces that result.
  • Keep the collected usage when the adapter hits an error after a model call starts, such as an exception that escapes BenchAgent or a malformed result.
  • Responses calls retain fix: report NOOA BenchAgent usage from model responses #441's counting rules: omitted counts stay unknown and reported zeros remain zero. Completion-client counting is unchanged.
  • Usage stays per invocation. The next task on the same runtime reports only its own calls.
  • Failures before any model call, such as invalid input or a Relay setup failure, still carry no usage.

Validation

  • Python 3.12 with the nooa extra: 78 NOOA tests passed, covering the BenchAgent adapter, the interactive adapter, Relay compatibility and the Harbor example.
  • New tests, one per client, run a failed task and then a successful one on the same runtime. The failed result carries its own usage and the next result carries only its own. Both fail without this change.
  • Other new tests raise after a model call for each client and keep the usage. They fail without this change. A test that raises before any call gets no usage.
  • Full Python suite on Python 3.14, where the NOOA tests skip: 2199 passed, 114 skipped and 27 failed. Each failure also fails on main on this machine, passes on a rerun, or passes when this commit runs in the main checkout's environment.
  • Ruff and all pre-commit hooks passed on all files. The Harbor end-to-end test skips on this machine.

Where should the reviewer start?

Start with BenchRuntime.invoke and _usage_after_error in adapters/python/nooa/src/nemo_fabric_adapters/nooa/bench_adapter.py, and check that a failed result carries the same usage a successful task would return.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added usage tracking for Responses API benchmark runs, including input, output, total, and cached input tokens.
    • Usage is aggregated across multiple model calls and reported for both successful and failed tasks.
    • Usage remains isolated between invocations and runtime sessions.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Preserved usage details when tasks fail after making model calls.
    • Missing or incomplete usage counters are handled safely, leaving usage unknown when it cannot be determined.
  • Documentation

    • Updated Task Mapping guidance to explain usage reporting for completion and Responses API clients.

NOOA 0.0.10 emits token_usage events only for CompletionClient.
ResponsesClient returns usage on each response but does not feed the task
token accumulator, so Fabric reported input, output and total tokens as
zero for Responses client runs.

When the selected model is a ResponsesClient, wrap its synchronous and
asynchronous calls and collect each returned usage report in an
invocation-scoped ContextVar. Sum provider-reported input, cached-input,
output and total tokens. If any returned report omits a counter, leave
that dimension unknown. Preserve explicit zeros and mark input tokens as
including cached tokens.

The CompletionClient path is unchanged. Tests drive the real
ResponsesClient directly with queued LiteLLM responses while leaving
NOOA's accumulator unpatched. They cover multi-call sums, explicit
zeros, missing usage, realistic missing cached-token details, and a
defensive summing case for an omitted output count.

The Responses usage tests drove only acall, and each one started a fresh
runtime. The adapter also wraps the synchronous call, and a persistent
runtime serves many invocations with the same wrapped client, so neither
path was pinned down.

The BenchAgent double now also drains a queue of synchronous replies
through ResponsesClient.call, and a new test checks that a sync call's
counters reach the invocation usage. A second test invokes one runtime
twice with different replies and checks each result's usage on its own,
so usage from the first invocation cannot carry over into the second.

Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>
When BenchAgent reported a task as failed, the adapter computed the
invocation's usage and then returned a failed result without it. The
tokens a failed task spent dropped out of run totals, so cost per
successful task read too low. The adapter contract asks adapters to keep
available usage on unsuccessful results.

Attach the same usage to the failed result for both the completion and
Responses API clients. Counting rules and successful results are
unchanged, and each invocation still reports only its own calls.

The review concern cannot be decided from the available repository evidence. The required NOOA 0.0.10 client source was not returned, and bench_adapter.py alone cannot establish whether other model entrypoints exist or whether ResponsesClient.acall delegates to self.call.

Walkthrough

BenchAdapter now collects usage from synchronous and asynchronous Responses API calls, aggregates token counters, and reports usage for successful and failed tasks. Completion clients continue to use task-token usage. Tests cover missing and partial counters, zero values, and per-invocation isolation.

No Relay bypass is established.

NOOA 0.0.10 implements MIDDLEWARE_LLM_CALL as an event-manager middleware chain. It does not patch ResponsesClient.call or ResponsesClient.acall on the class. The instance wrappers therefore do not support the claimed Relay interception failure.

The adapter collected usage only after BenchAgent returned. When the
task raised after a model call, or returned a malformed result, the
failed result lost the tokens already spent.

Mark the start of each model call on the selected client, for both the
completion and Responses API clients. After an invocation error, keep
the collected usage once a model call has started, and leave it unknown
before then. A usage collection error keeps the original failure result.
The subprocess fixture model gains the call methods that NOOA clients
have.
