The playerbots goals tests have three package-api: exempt lines. They run a shipped Runtime Script offline through runtime_script, and they scan Core source through test_scan. Neither root is on the Package API, so each line is a gap in it.

This PR adds crate::package_test, a Package API root that exists only in a Module test build. It has two parts:

  • ask_offline(event, actor, target, scripts) runs the scripts on a fresh Runtime Script Host and returns the Script Answer, read as script_binding::ask reads it. It discards Staged Effects. Any Script Diagnostic comes back as an error, so a broken shipped script fails its test. EntityView and RuntimeScript come along as its argument types.
  • read_scanned, code_of and shape_of re-export the source-scan helpers Core's Architecture Tests use.

The lint already had one gated root, package_fixture, legal only in a file that starts with the debug_reducers gate. I turned that into a short table of gated roots. package_test needs a first non-blank line of #![cfg(test)]. An ordinary build compiles every other Package file without the root, so the lint refuses the path there, and no exemption clears it. Five lint tests cover the refusal, the gated file, the wrong gate for each root, the exemption and the message. The Package API doc, the changelog and CONTEXT.md describe the root. The API version stays at 1.

Pair: LyraCoreProject/packages#74 moves the goals tests to the root. Merge Core first, then the packages PR.

Checks run locally, with the official Packages linked through check-core-tip.sh:

  • cargo test -p lyracore-module --lib --test package_api_lint -- package_test goals::tests package_api_lint_tests passes: 87 lib tests, 41 lint tests.
  • Three deliberate breaks made four goals tests fail, then I reverted them. I removed the stop_attack call in current_melee_target, removed the corpse delete in cascade_delete_character, and changed the shipped flee script's answer.

Full builds, clippy and the suites run in CI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Package test builds now provide tools to run shipped scripts in a fresh runtime and retrieve their answers or diagnostics. These tools are available only in files gated for tests.
  • Documentation
    • Updated Package API guidance to explain the test-only API and the separate build conditions for test and debug package APIs.

Package unit tests ran a shipped Runtime Script offline and scanned Core
source through runtime_script and test_scan, two roots off the Package
API. crate::package_test now gives them ask_offline, which runs scripts
on a fresh Runtime Script Host and returns the Script Answer, and the
read_scanned, code_of and shape_of scan helpers. The root exists only
in a test build.

The lint generalises the debug-only root into gated roots: a root is on
the surface only in a Package file whose first non-blank line is its
gate. package_test needs #![cfg(test)], and no exemption clears it.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds a test-only Package API root with offline script execution and source-inspection helpers. The Package API lint enforces the root’s #![cfg(test)] file gate and reports access that does not meet it.

Changes

Test-only Package API

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gated Package API lint and contract
CONTEXT.md, docs/package-api.md, module/build.rs, CHANGELOG.md
The lint recognizes package_fixture and package_test as roots gated by their respective file conditions. It rejects access to a gated root when the file gate does not match, even when an exemption applies. The documentation describes the package_test API and its test-file restriction.
Offline script helpers
module/src/lib.rs, module/src/package_test.rs
Test builds expose package_test. Its offline helper runs scripts on a fresh host, discards staged effects, and returns an answer or newline-joined diagnostics. Tests cover an answer and a script error.

The new test-only Package API works as described. However, registry discovery still scans test-only Package files. If one of those files contains a registry marker, normal builds can fail to compile. Excluding test-gated files from discovery is a small fix and is worth making before merge.

Code review: 8533c63 against main

No issue is linked, so the PR description is the spec. I checked the code statically and did not build it or run tests.

Standards

No hard violations.

  • Low. Middle Man, module/build.rs debug_only_file. It is now a one-line wrapper around file_gate, and its only caller is registry_file_enabled. By the CODING_STANDARDS deletion test it should go. Inline it: debug_reducers || file_gate(source) != Some(DEBUG_REDUCERS_FILE_CFG).
  • Low. Name shadowing, out_of_surface_paths. let file_gate = file_gate(source); shadows the function it calls. This is legal but reads oddly. gate would be clearer.
  • Nit. CONTEXT.md, Package API entry. The new sentence leaves one 124-column line in a paragraph that otherwise wraps near 100. Rewrap the paragraph.
  • Judgement calls I checked and would leave alone:
    • The unnamed (&str, &str) tuple in PACKAGE_API_GATED_ROOTS. root_gate hides it.
    • Option<&str> as the gate type. A newtype would enforce nothing.
    • The cfg_attr(not(has_packages), ...) header, which matches package_fixture.rs.
    • The order of trim and find in file_gate. The behaviour is unchanged.

Spec

  • Medium. Missing doc line: inline test modules are refused. The usual idiom is a #[cfg(test)] mod tests block inside an ordinary Package file. The lint refuses that idiom (a_test_root_is_refused_outside_a_test_only_file pins it), so authors must put these tests in a separate file that starts with #[cfg(test)]. docs/package-api.md and the CHANGELOG state the positive rule only. Add one sentence: "An inline #[cfg(test)] mod tests does not qualify; put the tests in their own #[cfg(test)] file."
  • Low. registry_file_enabled honours the debug gate only. The spec says package_test needs a first non-blank line of #[cfg(test)]. Registry discovery still treats such a file as always enabled. A game_hook! or other marker in a test-only Package file would then register in a non-test build and fail to compile. Markers in test files are unlikely, so a doc note or a follow-up is enough.
  • Note. ask_offline does not reproduce production exactly. It runs scripts in the caller's order and skips dispatch_order, which applies priority and the enabled filter. Production ask logs diagnostics and still returns the answer, but ask_offline returns Err. The spec states the second difference. The first is worth one clause in the doc table.
  • Scope. The "Prefer a pure function" advice in docs/package-api.md is not in the spec. It is reasonable guidance, so keep it.
  • Verified:
    • Each call gets a fresh host (RuntimeScriptHost::new(), not the thread-local host).
    • The re-exported helpers exist as pub(crate) in test_scan.rs.
    • No existing test asserts the old debug-root message wording.
    • Keeping API version 1 follows the doc's "grows by addition" rule.
    • The table logic for gate per root and for "no exemption clears it" is correct, and the five new lint tests cover the paths the spec names.

Summary:

  • Standards: 3 findings. The worst is the leftover debug_only_file wrapper.
  • Spec: 2 findings and 1 note. The worst is the undocumented refusal of inline #[cfg(test)] mod tests.

Exclude test-only files from ordinary registry discovery.

registry_file_enabled filters only debug-reducer files. A #![cfg(test)] Package file can therefore be scanned, and its marker path is emitted into package_registries.rs without a test gate. Rust removes the marked item from an ordinary build, so the generated reference can fail compilation.
