Combat, cast, chat and aura Relays visited every viewer on a Shard, and aura presentation cloned and scanned the full aura cache. Cell audiences and a target aura index reduce that work while retaining the final visibility checks in each World Session writer.

The audiences and aura reads carry their source Shard. Late source deletes cannot remove a destination entity. Reconnect reconciles only the replaced Shard, removes vanished objects, clears vanished pets and refreshes aura presentation. Callback registration and snapshot setup run together on the SDK pump. Recovery parks the fresh pump at subscription apply, joins the old pump, publishes the replacement cache, installs every relay callback, then resumes. An old callback cannot overwrite a completed Transfer, and fresh deltas wait for their callbacks.

Unregister also invalidates the Viewer. Queued work checks that lifetime when the writer runs it, preventing old source packets from reaching a replacement World Session.

At 2,000 Characters, distributed combat queued 336,124 jobs, compared with 4,000,000 for the former Shard broadcast. The dense case still queued 4,000,000 jobs. With 64,000 auras, 50 partial aura events produced 8,483 viewer syncs.

Local owner events, including rest, breath, trade, duel and resurrect updates, retain their source Shard during transfers. If a reconnect hook panics, setup stops the fresh pump before partially installed Relays can run.

Verified with 1,368 Gateway tests, including shard overlap, aura isolation, reconnect reconciliation, paused callback publication ordering and a shared send queue across Transfer. The opt-in release measurement covers 500, 1,000 and 2,000 viewers in distributed and dense populations, plus 32 auras per target. It measures Relay selection and encoding only; it does not establish realm capacity or end-to-end latency.

Review fixes by GPT-6 Astra through Codex, independently reviewed by GPT-5.6 Sol through Codex.

WorldView maintains shard-aware spatial state, aura indexing, deferred dispatch, viewer invalidation, and resident-state reconciliation.
Cell-based event dispatch
gateway/src/stdb/subscriptions.rs, gateway/src/stdb/world_view.rs, docs/architecture.md
Entity, movement, combat, delayed damage, and chat relays use shard-aware viewer dispatch. Documentation identifies the indexed source cell for each event type.
Indexed aura synchronization
gateway/src/stdb/subscriptions.rs
Aura insertion, updates, deletion, stealth checks, movement-speed aggregation, and reconnect snapshots use shard-scoped indexed aura state.
Relay validation and scaling
gateway/src/stdb/world_view/cell_audience_tests.rs, gateway/src/stdb/world_view/relay_bench.rs
Tests cover audience selection, aura indexing, transfer isolation, reconnect cleanup, recentering, destruction handling, and distant-viewer exclusion. An ignored benchmark measures relay workloads.

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d1b34

This change improves shard-scoped relay delivery and reconnect handling, but late source-shard private, rest, or breath events may still reach a player after transfer, and stalled pump retirement can impede recovery. These correctness and availability risks should be addressed before merge.

Protect the timed aura_sync call from dead-code elimination

The Rust 1.93.0 toolchain supports std::hint::black_box. Because aura_sync only builds and returns an Outbound, discarding the result lets release builds remove the work. Pass the target GUID and returned Outbound through black_box so sync measures the encoding cost.

A synthetic realm of N viewers, 4N creatures and 5N auras, no sockets and
no database, that times a burst of combat, cast, impact and aura relay work
at 500, 1000 and 2000 players. Ignored by default; run it with
--ignored --nocapture in release.

Combat, melee stance, cast, impact, emote, chat and aura rows enqueued one
job per viewer on the shard and let the job's gate reject the row, so each
event cost the shard's population and the total grew with its square. The
Module already stamps the actor's cell on the event rows; the gateway now
anchors each relay on that cell (or the actor's indexed cell) and asks the
cell index for the viewers whose box covers it. The per-viewer gate stays
the final filter. A yell widens the span to its 300 yd range.

The aura cache is indexed by target on the gateway, keyed by (shard, id),
so the array sync, the run-speed fold, the stealth count on the pump and
the peer CREATE's stealth check read one unit's auras instead of scanning
the shard.

Bound the delayed damage log scheduling instead of one thread per viewer per shot.

combat_event_outbound runs once per candidate viewer. Each ranged hit with impact_delay_ms > 0 therefore spawns one OS thread per viewer that only sleeps and then enqueues one packet. With the viewer counts this PR measures (500–2,000), a sustained Auto Shot exchange creates thousands of concurrent sleeping threads, each with its own stack, and pays a thread-create cost per shot per viewer.

A single timer thread or a shared delay queue keyed by fire time would produce the same ordering guarantee at constant thread cost. The enqueue call itself is cheap, so only the sleep needs to move.

Add the "fewer than the shard" assertion to the melee test.

This test only compares candidates ∩ gate against shard ∩ gate. Both sets stay equal if melee_audience regresses to returning every viewer on the shard, so the test cannot detect a loss of cell scoping. The combat, aura, and cast tests all guard against this with a skipped_someone accumulator.

Scope rest and breath relays to the callback shard.

arm_shard registers these callbacks per shard, but both handlers use the global session_of_owner map. A delayed source-shard row can therefore select the owner's active destination-shard replacement, and enqueue accepts it. Capture shard in both registrations and use viewer_of_owner_on_shard(shard, OwnerGuid(row.character_guid)) in both handlers.

Send the fresh Resume during unwinding.

The watchdog parks the fresh pump before post_install. If hook dispatch or an on_reconnect hook panics, no catch_unwind handles it, so the watchdog thread unwinds before PumpCommand::Resume is sent. The parked pump still passes is_healthy(), and the terminated watchdog cannot repair it. Keep the Resume send in an unwind-safe drop guard.

Commit 3ae1c0d also corrects the test-only index statistics comment and adds an assertion that the melee audience excludes distant viewers. All three focused tests passed.

The delayed ranged-damage branch is unreachable with current Module producers: ranged launches carry zero damage, and a later Module impact event supplies the damage log. A separate tested fix removes that obsolete branch; adding a timer would preserve code that no current producer uses. The AOI measurements do not claim savings from removing that branch.

Commit d1b34d4 addresses the outside-diff rest/breath finding and the hook-unwind nit. Rest, breath, resurrect, trade, duel and group-member mirror updates now retain their source gameplay Shard. These callbacks are registered only on world Shards; distinct Realm-core whisper and group delivery keeps its existing routing. Packet-level transfer coverage verifies that late source rows cannot reach a destination World Session.

If a reconnect hook panics, the fresh setup guard sends Stop. It sends Resume only after all hooks return. Resuming partially installed callbacks would violate the snapshot boundary. The panic still propagates; this change does not claim watchdog recovery. The real pump-loop regression covers both normal completion and unwind.

Full Gateway suite: 1,368 passed, two ignored. Independent review found no remaining defect in this delta.

Scope local private-event callbacks by shard.

These callbacks discard shard. Their handlers use global session_of_owner, so a late source-shard delta after transfer can queue a stale whisper, system message, or group event for the destination viewer.

Pass shard through these local registrations and use viewer_of_owner_on_shard. Keep the realm-core callback path unscoped because it is the explicit cross-shard source.

shard, and change their owner lookup to viewer_of_owner_on_shard. Leave the
realm-core callback path using the existing unscoped session_of_owner lookup for
intentional cross-shard events.

Kept the addressed-message routing after tracing all three producers and obtaining an independent review. The proposed blanket fence would break cross-Shard party chat.

  • gateway/src/world/party.rs mirrors the full Realm-core roster to each World Shard. module/src/chat.rs::apply_party_chat emits a GroupEvent for every mirrored member, and group::push_event deliberately accepts recipients with no local Character row. A party line produced on Shard A for a member on Shard B must reach B. Restricting this callback to A would drop it.
  • Normal sharded whispers use Realm-core; the world producer is the unsharded fallback. Both carry immutable, addressed chat.
  • System Messages are validated for an online Character when committed. Their outbound builder only renders the committed text; it does not read or apply source Shard state. Delivery can follow the addressed Character after a Transfer.

wire_insert_live drops subscription-apply replay, and every handler checks the recipient GUID. Viewer retirement still drops jobs selected against an old Viewer. These properties prevent stale snapshot replay and delivery to another Character while preserving addressed messages. No code change is needed for this finding. The combined candidate containing all audit fixes passed all package and private runtime checks.

The separately tested removal of the obsolete ranged-damage scheduling branch is now open as #431. Current ranged launches carry zero damage; authoritative damage still comes from the Module impact event.
