Project Proposal Clarify exactly who the application is for and what accessibility problem the first version will solve. Done when: target users, primary problem, and initial accessibility scope are documented.

Problem Statement

Traditional navigation for pedestrians are generally optimize for distance and travel time. However for different cases like people with certain disabilities, those route may not be usable. Because a route can have multiply physical barriers such as;

  • Stairs
  • Narrow pathways
  • Temporary construction
  • Missing curb ramps
  • Unavailable elevators
  • Uneven or unstable surfaces
  • Blocked sidewalks
  • unavailable elevators
  • Steep slopes

Accessible Path will address this problem helping users find pedestrian routes that consider mobility-related accessibility requirements, and not relying only on distance or travel time.

Core Problem

How pedestrian system for navigation recommend a usable route between two location while considering physical accessibility barriers and mobility requirements of the user?

Example

Route A:

  • 400 meters
  • Contains stairs
  • Shortest route Route B:
  • 550 meters
  • use sidewalk
  • has curb ramps
  • avoid stairs
  • reaches an accessible entrance

Accessible Path would reconsider this constraint and recommend Route B. While traditional system may prefer Route A.

Primary Target Users

The initial target will be people withe mobility-related accessibility needs. The first version will Sandifer users such as:

  • Manual wheelchair users
  • Power wheelchair users
  • People using walkers
  • People using scratches or other mobility aids
  • People who have difficulty using stairs
  • People who need relatively level pedestrian routes. This peopled need mor detailed information about the physical characteristic of a pedestrian route.

Secondary Users

The system could eventually help:

  • older adults withe limited mobility
  • people recoverin from injuries
  • Parents using strollers
  • People transporting carts or equipment
  • visitor unfamiliar withe accessible entrance and routes

Accessibility scope

  • Stairs
  • ramps
  • Curb ramps
  • Accessible pedestrian paths
  • Sidewalk/path availability
  • significant slope
  • physical barriers that prevent passage

Properties may be added later if reliable date such

  • Surface type
  • Path width -Elevator availability
  • Automatic doors
  • temporary construction
  • Snow or temporary obstructions

Definicion of Done
