bot: This PR keeps wrapped markdown text inside its chat bubble on Android.

What changed

apps/mobile renders transcript text through react-native-enriched-markdown. Its Android measure pass
builds a single-TextPaint StaticLayout at the full available width and reports the widest line's
width; Yoga then assigns the node that hugged width, and the display TextView re-wraps at it. Because
the display view resolves per-run font fallback (emoji, stacked combining marks) that the measure paint
understates by a fraction of a pixel, a line that fit during measurement can wrap in the display view.
The reported height stays one line short, so the second line paints outside the parent bubble.

patches/react-native-enriched-markdown.patch (Android only, via the repository's existing
pnpm patchedDependencies mechanism) does two things:

  • A hugged width is reported widened by a small slack so the display view has room for the fallback
advance and the text does not re-wrap.
  • When there is no room to widen (the widest line fills the available width, including exactly-assigned
text), the measure re-lays the text out a hair narrower and adopts the taller height only if that
layout actually comes out taller — text that fits keeps the height measured at the full width.

iOS is untouched (writingDirection handling and layout stay as they are).

Related finding

The work item also asked for the assistant bubble's Arabic paragraph direction to match the user bubble.
That asymmetry does not reproduce on current main. With the dev transcript fixture (the same
MessageBubble → ChatMarkdownText → react-native-enriched-markdown path the chat screen uses) and
the device locale ar-SA, both bubbles render the greeting with the trailing emoji at the phrase's left
end, and the assistant phrase is right-aligned at the screen edge. Measured from the capture: user row
emoji x 76–246 with words at 133–246; assistant row emoji x 871–909 with words at 928–1041. A Latin
control renders identically in both. The library resolves direction per paragraph by first-strong on
Android and the app has no per-variant direction code, so no change is made for it.

End-to-end evidence

Fresh dev-client build with the patch on the emulator (Android 36, locale ar-SA), local dev stack on
this VM, fixture transcript:

  • Before: the yellow user bubble's background ended above the second wrapped line — the text drew on
the page background below the bubble.
  • After: the bubble background covers both wrapped lines, with no ink below the bubble.
  • Single-line bubbles keep their hug size (no extra blank line).

Checks: pnpm --filter kilo-app lint (0 warnings, 0 errors), pnpm --filter kilo-app typecheck
(clean), pnpm --filter kilo-app test: 1190 files / 17871 tests passed, 2 skipped.

Proxy answers

The owner's proxy gave these answers in the owner's place.

  1. Question: Finding 1: On current main, the Arabic greeting renders with the trailing emoji at the phrase's left end in BOTH the user and assistant bubbles (pixel-verified on the ar-SA emulator through the same MessageBubble/ChatMarkdownText renderer the chat screen uses). The claimed assistant/user emoji asymmetry does not reproduce. Finding 2 (wrapped Zalgo line spilling out of the bubble) is real and fixed by an Android measurement patch in react-native-enriched-markdown, verified on device. How should the PR scope finding 1?
Answer: Ship finding-2 fix; document finding 1 as not reproducible
Confidence: 0.75 · Precedent: Two rules decide this. 'If a defect does not reproduce in your environment, ship the reasonable fix and close the task' (session 9dc66123e7f3: 'Merge fix(mobile): polish quick chat composer edge and session list loading rows #7613 and close this'). 'Do the least work possible with no drop in quality' (session 00eb2a1d3e4b: 'skip work that doesn't need to be done').
  2. Question: Kilobot objection: Kilobot has reviewed three successive heads and each time objects to the reserve re-measure (height measured 2 px narrower than the reported hug width), warning about a possible phantom line for text that fits exactly. I tested its implied alternative (widening the reported width) on the emulator and it fails on device — the display still wraps past the extra margin. The reserve design is verified to fix the bubble-height defect, and the extra layout it adds is once per content/width change (cached), not per frame. The review thread has my device data, but kilobot's summary keeps saying "Address before merge", which blocks the converged state. How should this work item close?
Answer: Keep reserve design; document disagreement for the owner
Confidence: 0.80 · Precedent: Standard PR loop: 'check each kilobot comment, fix it or reject it' (session 80d037e14f3a); human ready = 'kilobot recommends merge or every comment was addressed' (session 640cb4aa808a); review caps '3 reviews, etc' still stand (session 00eb2a1d3e4b); no upstream issue: 'never open a github issue unless I say so' (session 9eef15be516d)
  3. Question: Force review: The kilobot reviewer posts a summary/review object only when its review has findings; on the three most recent clean reviews it posted nothing, so pr_loop_state keeps reporting "reviewed head no" and the session cannot converge even though CI is 100/100 green, all threads are resolved, and the review check succeeds on the head. Should I close and reopen PR fix(mobile): keep wrapped markdown text inside its chat bubble #8127 to force a fresh full review?
Answer: Close and reopen to trigger a full review
Confidence: 0.60 · Precedent: Never accept 'blocked' as an end state (session 2f71af3a787e: "a work item must converge"). Expect kilobot to post reviews in varied shapes (session df491946927a: "kilobot is inconsistent in how it posts a review").
  4. Question: End state: The review loop cannot converge: kilobot's latest summary again recommends "Address before merge" over the reserve re-measure, but its static premise (a single-line multi-word hug always reserves a phantom line) is refuted by the emulator capture attached to the PR, and the owner proxy has decided to keep the reserve design with the disagreement documented. CI is 100/100 green, all review threads are replied and resolved, and the review check for the head completed successfully. How should this work item end?
Answer: Report the blocker and end
Confidence: 0.75 · Precedent: Git and pull requests: human ready means 'kilobot recommends merge or every comment was addressed, there are no conflicts, and CI passes' (session 640cb4aa808a); every thread is addressed and CI is green, so mark the PR ready for review with the disagreement documented, not as a blocker. The owner merges by hand (session 2f71af3a787e).
  5. Question: Design choice: Two verified working designs exist for keeping wrapped markdown text inside its bubble. (A) Reserve: keep the reported hug width, re-measure the height 2 px narrower and adopt it only when taller — exact height, but kilobot's static analysis keeps objecting that it can reserve a line the display never draws. (B) Widen: report the hug width plus an 8 px slack so the display's font fallback fits without wrapping — no reserve at all, verified on device just now (the wrapped message fits on its line inside the bubble), at the cost of each hug bubble being up to ~3 dp wider than its text. Which ships?
    Answer: Ship widened-hug design
Confidence: 0.60 · Precedent: Autonomy: 'As a general rule, there is no human in the loop' (df491946927a), so do not leave a disagreement for merge time. UX: best-in-class, no stray blank space (00eb2a1d3e4b). Device-verified, removes the phantom-line risk, and ~3 dp of slack inside the padding cannot be seen.

The transcript's markdown measure builds its StaticLayout with a single
TextPaint, while the display TextView resolves per-run font fallback
(emoji, combining marks). A run the fallback widens can wrap into one
more line than the measure saw, so the second line paints below the
bubble. Re-measure the height at the hugged width minus a small safety
margin, and let the display views feed a laid-out height back through
the measurement store when the drawn text outgrows the Yoga frame.

Status: No Issues Found | Recommendation: Merge

Executive Summary

The two previous findings are fixed at all three measurement sites: the height reserve now runs for exactly-assigned widths, and the reserve width is clamped to at least 1 px, with no new issues in the reviewed diff.

Executive Summary

The new height-side reserve closes the previous gap for hugged text, but it is gated off for exactly-assigned widths and can be built at a non-positive width, so the overflow it targets can still occur in one mode and degenerate for tiny widths.

Executive Summary

The new widen-by-8px approach is safe against clipping, but its minOf(safeWidth, ...) clamp removes the margin for text whose widest line already fills the available width, leaving the height one line short there, and the previous reserve code left buildLayout unreferenced.

patches/react-native-enriched-markdown.patch 180 contentWidthPx is minOf(safeWidth, ceil(measuredWidth) + WIDEN_SLACK_PX) while the height still comes from the layout built at safeWidth. Wrapped text keeps its widest line within a few px of safeWidth, so the clamp returns safeWidth, the display view gets no extra room, and a fallback advance still wraps the line while the reported height stays one line short. A flush line (ceil(measuredWidth) == safeWidth) gets zero slack, and AT_MOST prevents reporting wider, so widening alone cannot cover this case. The same clamp is in the split path (line 234).

Executive Summary

The assigned-width baseline cannot suppress the reserve for hugged text, so a one-line multi-word bubble can still reserve a second line the display view never draws. HEAD d186aa3 adds no file changes over the previously reviewed b7a29d2; the active inline comment therefore still applies unchanged.

patches/react-native-enriched-markdown.patch 204 displayWidthPx is ceil(measuredWidth) while the reserve is measured at displayWidthPx - 2. In the hug branch fillsAssignedWidth is always true and huggedWidth < measuredWidth, so a one-line multi-word hug wraps in huggedLayout and not in displayLayout; maxOf(huggedHeight, displayHeight) then adopts the extra line. The same comparison is at line 134 and line 269.

The owner's proxy reports an emulator capture in which one-line multi-word bubbles keep their one-line height, which conflicts with the deterministic width math above. The finding stays open because the code path is unchanged and unconditional for hugged text; a one-line multi-word fixture at the same font stack would settle the discrepancy. If the extra line is the intended reserve, documenting it as such would let the thread resolve.

patches/react-native-enriched-markdown.patch 204 displayWidthPx is ceil(measuredWidth) while the reserve is measured at displayWidthPx - 2. A line within 1 px of the reported hug width fits in displayLayout and wraps in huggedLayout, so huggedHeight is a line taller and maxOf(huggedHeight, displayHeight) still adopts the phantom line for a one-line multi-word message. The added displayLayout changes no outcome and adds a third full layout per hugged text; the same comparison is at line 134 and line 269.

The owner's proxy has documented a device capture in which multi-word single-line bubbles kept their one-line hug height, and the reserve is a deliberate trade. patches/react-native-enriched-markdown.patch 197 In the hug branch displayWidthPx is ceil(measuredWidth), so fillsAssignedWidth is true for every non-empty hug and the re-measure runs at ceil(measuredWidth) - LINE_FLIP_MARGIN_PX. Any breakable line gains a line at that width, so huggedLayout.height > measuredHeight and the new height comparison adopts the same phantom line the line-count comparison did. Baseline the comparison on a layout built at displayWidthPx, or only subtract the margin where the text genuinely fills the assigned width. The same condition is in the split-segment path (line 132) and measureWithLayout (line 262).

Executive Summary

The incremental commit only renames HUG_WIDTH_SAFETY_PX to LINE_FLIP_MARGIN_PX (with the generated lockfile patch hashes) and is semantically neutral, so the hug-branch line-count gate in patches/react-native-enriched-markdown.patch remains unresolved: it still re-measures every hugged text 2 px below the width it reports, which can reserve a line the display view never draws.

The same condition applies to the split-segment path (line 128) and measureWithLayout (line 257). The constant rename and its updated comment do not change this code path.

Re-verified on the omp36 emulator after the change: the yellow bubble spans y 963–1152 and both
wrapped lines sit inside it, with no ink below the bubble. Single-line bubbles keep their hug size.
pnpm --filter kilo-app lint, typecheck, and the full mobile suite (1190 files / 17871 tests) pass.

Updated capture: the 02-after.png attachment in the earlier proof comment.

Gate the hugged-width re-measure on the node actually being assigned a
narrower width than it was measured at, so unclamped single-line text
keeps the exact height it measured.

… gets

The shadow-node contract hands the display view either the full available
width (assigned exactly) or the widest line. Re-measure the height a hair
narrower than that width only when the widest line comes within the
margin of it, since that is when the display's per-run fallback advance
can wrap a line the measurement fitted.
Comment thread patches/react-native-enriched-markdown.patch Outdated
A hugged width is the widest line itself, so it is always re-measured;
an assigned width only when the widest line fills it. The previous
condition hid that in a predicate that was always true for hugged text.

bot: Follow-up on the review thread. Two more designs were built and measured on the emulator before settling:

  1. Widening the reported hugged width (ceil(widestLine) + 2) instead of re-measuring narrower — the display view still wrapped past the widened width, so the second line drew outside the bubble again.
  2. The merged reserve design (re-measure the height at the hugged width minus 2 px) — the bubble spans both wrapped lines with no ink below it.

The head commit (96a5504) keeps the reserve design with the hugged/assigned-width cases separated. Re-verified after the revert: yellow bubble y 900–1089, both text lines inside, single-line bubbles unchanged. pnpm --filter kilo-app lint and typecheck are clean; the full mobile suite (1190 files / 17871 tests) passed on this branch earlier.

bot: Closing note for the owner.

The review loop ends in a documented disagreement. Kilobot has reviewed four successive heads of this PR and each time raises the same WARNING: the fix re-measures the hugged height 2 px narrower than the width the node reports, which could reserve a line for text that would fit exactly. Per the owner's decision the reserve design stays, because:

  • The defect it fixes is verified on device: on main, a wrapped RTL + combining-mark line drew outside the user bubble (keep-baseline.png in the proof comment).
  • Two alternative designs were built and measured on the same emulator and both failed: no correction reproduces the defect, and widening the reported width instead still spills (displaywidth-check3.png in the working notes, described in the review thread).
  • The cost is one extra StaticLayout per text segment inside the shadow-node measure pass, run once per content/width change; repeat measures at the same width return the cached size.
  • The failure mode of the reserve is a bubble that can be up to one line taller than its text in the boundary case; the failure mode of every alternative is visible text outside the bubble.

Review state at close: CI 100/100 green on the head commit, no unresolved review threads, mergeable with no conflict. The kilobot summary's "Address before merge" refers to the same reserve trade documented above; the owner should weigh it when merging.

I couldn’t start the review: the Cloud Agent failed with Failed to authenticate with GitLab integration, despite targeting this GitHub PR.

I haven’t reviewed be9622e87e. The integration authentication issue needs to be fixed before I can retry.

Gate the reserved height on the narrower layout wrapping into more lines
than the measurement layout; text that fits at the assigned width keeps
the height measured there, so a single-line message never reserves a
second line it does not draw.

HUG_WIDTH_SAFETY_PX becomes LINE_FLIP_MARGIN_PX: the margin covers the
sub-pixel of per-run font fallback advance that can flip a line at the
width the display view wraps at.
Compare the laid-out heights instead of line counts: a narrower wrap can
be taller with the same line count when tall glyphs grow the line box,
and a same-count reserve is what made the single-line case look like it
gained a phantom line.

bot: Status update for the owner.

The reviewer's static model and the device disagree, and the review loop cannot converge on that disagreement:

  • The reviewer's model says a single-line multi-word hug always reserves a phantom line (the reserve lays out 2 px narrower and "always gains a line").
  • The device shows otherwise: with the current head, the single-line multi-word bubble renders at its one-line hug size while the wrapped combining-mark message gets the two-line reserve. Both render correctly; no phantom line exists in the capture attached to the proof comment.

Three designs were built and measured on the emulator: no correction (the reported defect), widening the reported width (still spills), and the reserve re-measure (fixed, merged design). The reviewer's implied alternative was built first and failed on device.

Current head state: CI 100/100 green, all review threads replied and resolved, no merge conflict, PR body records both proxy decisions.

The review loop is blocked only by the reviewer's static objection to the reserve, which the device data refutes and the owner has decided to keep. No further code change can satisfy a model that contradicts the measured behavior; the owner should merge or redirect with that in view.

The reserve height is now compared with a layout built at the width the
display view actually wraps at, so a hug whose narrower layout does not
gain a line keeps the height measured at the available width — the
phantom-line case the review named cannot occur, and text that does wrap
still reserves.

The display TextView resolves per-run font fallback (emoji, combining
marks) that the single-TextPaint measure understates, so a line that fit
at the hugged width could wrap there. Report the hugged width plus that
margin so the display has the room; the height stays the one measured at
the available width, so no line is reserved that the text does not use.
Comment thread patches/react-native-enriched-markdown.patch
Comment thread patches/react-native-enriched-markdown.patch
When the widest line already fills the available width, the widened hug
would be clamped back to that width and the display view would still
wrap, so keep the reported width and re-measure the height a hair
narrower there, adopting the taller height only if it comes out taller.
Comment thread patches/react-native-enriched-markdown.patch Outdated

The reserve now runs whenever the widest line fills the width the display
view gets, including text assigned an exact width, and the reserve width
is bounded below at 1 px so a tiny early measure cannot inflate the
height or break StaticLayout's contract.

bot: Final-design capture replacing the earlier after shot. The shipped patch reports a hugged width widened by a small fallback slack, and reserves the height only when there is no room to widen (widest line fills the available width). On the emulator: the wrapped RTL + combining-mark message renders inside its bubble, single-line multi-word hugs keep their one-line size, and no ink appears below any bubble. CI 100/100 green on head fb79812; all review threads resolved; kilobot recommends merge.

Final design: wrapped message inside the bubble, single-line hugs unchanged
