Change

The login screen loses the typed email when its mount dies, and the email-code step gave no visible feedback when a code was refused. Two fixes in the mobile sign-in flow:

  1. The typed email survives a remount. LoginScreen now writes the module-level login drafts back to SecureStore when it unmounts, so whatever mount follows restores the email the user had typed. Previously the drafts were persisted only when the language sheet reloaded the app, so any other screen teardown (a device rotation that recreates the activity) restored an empty field.

  2. Email-code verification reports refusals inline. verifyEmailCode in use-native-auth.ts now returns a result object ({ ok: true } | { ok: false; message }) instead of showing a toast. EmailOtpForm renders the localized refusal (authErrors.invalidCode, tooManyAttempts, codeInProgress, signInTimedOut — all keys already exist in every catalog) as destructive text above the verify button. The message clears when the user edits the code, resends, goes back, or requests a new code. The button already showed a spinner and disabled while verifying; that stays.

Types: BusyAction and the new EmailCodeVerifyResult are exported by name from use-native-auth.ts, replacing ReturnType<typeof useNativeAuth>['busy'] at the two consumers.

Follow-up review hardening: a completed sign-in on any provider path now retires the login drafts. The published auth token (device code, email code, Apple, Google, passkey all publish through the auth context) clears the module drafts and disarms the unmount persistence, so a previous account's address can never reappear on the next login mount.

Evidence

  • Mounted tests (real useNativeAuth): wrong-code refusal renders inline and clears on edit; correct code signs in silently; step-up refusals surface as inline result messages, no toast. login-screen mounted tests pin the unmount persistence contract, including a sign-in that publishes its token without the device-auth path. All 33 login-screen + mounted login flow tests pass on the final head; mobile tsc --noEmit clean.
  • Server contract exercised on the local backend: correct code → token; wrong code → 401 INVALID_CODE.
  • Android emulator end-to-end run of the fixed flow: screenshots attached below after PR creation.
  • pnpm typecheck, pnpm lint, pnpm format clean in apps/mobile.

Proxy answers

The owner's proxy gave these answers in the owner's place.

  1. Question: Code-step failure feedback: the verify button already shows a spinner and disables while busy (loading={busy==='otp-verify'}), and refusals currently go through a toast, which the explorer missed. The plan switches verify refusals to a localized inline destructive text inside the OTP form (reusing authErrors.invalidCode / tooManyAttempts / codeInProgress / signInTimedOut keys — no new copy). Is that the right surface?
Answer: Inline destructive text above the verify button (Recommended)
Confidence: 0.80 · Precedent: UX rule 'remove redundant copy' (session a247f3c19b1e: asked to remove redundant copy); the brief asks for a localized inline error, and existing keys keep i18n intact (session dcb3f9170164: 'the mobile app always must respect i18n')
  2. Question: verifyEmailCode currently returns Promise and toasts. To surface inline errors the plan changes its contract to return a result object ({ok:true}|{ok:false, message}). Only caller is IdleAuth. Acceptable to change this internal hook contract?
Answer: Result object, inline only (Recommended)
Confidence: 0.85 · Precedent: Replace old paths instead of keeping them (session ad6a3f589364: 'alongside? why not instead?'); pass data as typed values (session 55c9c80332a7)
  3. Question: Rotation reset: RN's Expo-prebuilt Android manifest sets configChanges (keyboard|keyboardHidden|orientation|screenSize|uiMode), so a plain rotation normally does NOT recreate the activity or remount the login route. The explorer saw the email gone after rotating with the sheet open. Plan: reproduce on the emulator first, observe whether the JS tree survives, and fix the demonstrated mechanism. If the field merely loses value on a genuine remount, seed the field's defaultValue from the restored draft (already partially wired). OK to proceed evidence-first instead of adding SecureStore writes per keystroke?
Answer: Reproduce first, then fix the actual mechanism (Recommended)
Confidence: 0.65 · Precedent: Least work with no drop in quality (session 7f3470e0ba6f: 'do the least amount of work possible, with no drop in quality'). If it does not reproduce, still ship the reasonable fix of seeding the field from the restored draft (session 9dc66123e7f3: chose 'Merge fix(mobile): polish quick chat composer edge and session list loading rows #7613 and close this')
  4. Question: Correct-code no-op (finding 3): I could not find a client path that sends a stale challenge — requestEmailCode always overwrites challengeRef, and the server deletes prior rows when minting a new code, so a stale id gives a fast 401 INVALID_CODE, not 7s of silence. The silence most likely was an invisible toast (the same gap finding 2 fixes) or an admission/timeout stall. Plan: fix feedback first, then reproduce the exact scenario E2E; if the first correct code still fails with INVALID_CODE, add a one-shot stale-challenge fallback (retry without challengeId) at that point.
Answer: Inline error first; protocol change only if E2E reproduces it (Recommended)
Confidence: 0.70 · Precedent: Bug reports need a reproduction (session 7f3470e0ba6f: 'only bug reports technically need to care about repro'); skip speculative work (session 00eb2a1d3e4b: 'skip work that doesn't need to be done')
  5. Question: Ledger mismatch: The work item's PR (fix(mobile): keep the login email across rotation and show code-step feedback #8046) is fully converged by direct GitHub API evidence: the kilobot review app's check-run "Kilo Code Review" on the current head 00069da concluded success (id 118700339780), the kilobot summary comment at 14:59:02Z postdates the head push at 14:56:27Z and reads "No Issues Found | Recommendation: Merge" covering HEAD 00069da, CI is 100 passed / 0 failed, no merge conflict, no unresolved threads. But the session gate reports "Kilobot has not finished a review of the head commit" because pr_loop_state reads only the first 100 check-runs per commit and each push now creates ~105, so the review check lands on page 2 and the tool reports "reviewed head no" — a pagination false negative that waiting or new pushes cannot fix (verified: total_count=105, review check on page 2 for heads f2a415e, 8f40df4, 00069da). How should the session end?
Answer: Fix the class of the bug: make pr_loop_state paginate through all check-runs for the head commit, not just the first 100, and push that fix directly to main in the workflow repo. Then rerun the gate and end ready. If the fix cannot reach this session's tooling in time, end ready on the recorded API evidence (check-run id, page-2 listing, summary after the push) and note the gate bug in the session evidence. Do not stop as blocked, and do not merge automatically.
Confidence: 0.60 · Precedent: Autonomy: 'Never accept blocked or failed as an end state; treat a blocked item as a workflow bug' (2f71af3a787e: 'a work item must converge') and 'fix class of issue preventing progress' (7f3470e0ba6f); workflow repo: 'push directly to main' (2f71af3a787e)
  6. Question: Gate deadlock: The gate's "Kilobot has not finished a review of the head commit" clause cannot be satisfied in this session, and I have exhausted the levers: (1) the fix is already on iscekic/kilo-workflow main (86dd27298), so there is nothing to push; (2) the deployed gate on this VM (/opt/kwf, static ESM import in the running host, PID 3176) predates the fix, and editing files cannot affect the loaded module; (3) restarting the host or the VM records the session as crashed and deletes the VM (work-vm-startup.sh rebooted=1 path), losing the ready claim; (4) pr_loop_state and drain_session_end have both been re-run — pr_loop_state reads the same unpaged query the gate uses, so it will always report "reviewed head no" for any head with >100 check-runs. Verified evidence on GitHub: Kilo Code Review check-run 118700339780 success on head 00069da (page 2 of 105), kilobot summary 14:59:02Z after the 14:56:27Z push reading "No Issues Found | Recommendation: Merge" covering HEAD 00069da, CI 100/0/0, no conflicts, no unresolved threads. Proxy answer 5 authorized ending ready on this evidence, but the gate implementation itself still refuses. How should I proceed?
    Answer: Override the gate (Recommended)
Confidence: 0.60 · Precedent: Never accept 'blocked' as an end state: session 2f71af3a787e, 'a work item must converge'. Do the least work with no drop in quality: session 00eb2a1d3e4b, 'do not redo work that was already done'. The class fix is already on kilo-workflow main and will reach the fleet through the periodic pull. Override only the ready claim, using the recorded evidence: Kilo Code Review success on head 00069da, kilobot 'Recommendation: Merge', CI green, no conflicts, no open threads. Mark the PR ready for review and assign it to me. Do not enable auto-merge.
  7. Question: Override lever: The proxy's latest answer says "Override the gate", but the drain_session_end tool on this host is the gate's implementation and has no override input: it re-checks GitHub through the same stale unpaged read and refuses regardless of the recorded proxy decision. There is no host-side flag, no config, and no tool argument that marks a claim as proxy-overridden (checked /opt/kwf/src/work-host.ts and work-end.ts — decideEnd has no override path). All six proxy answers are in the PR body, the PR is assigned to the owner, and the evidence is recorded. What is the concrete lever to execute the override decision?
    Answer: Stop retrying, yield (Recommended)
Confidence: 0.60 · Precedent: Deploy forward-only: 'killing everything on fleet deploy - every item can resume from last complete step' (61b0bf81a8cc); auto-propagation via periodic git pull and restart (df491946927a). The paged-read fix on kilo-workflow main reaches this host, the item resumes, and the gate passes, so it converges without manual owner-side closure.

…feedback

The login screen now writes the module-level drafts back to SecureStore when
it unmounts, so a rotation that recreates the activity restores the typed
email instead of blanking the field.

Email-code verification returns a result object instead of toasting: a wrong,
spent, or contested code renders its localized message inline above the
verify button, cleared by editing the code, resending, going back, or
requesting a new code.

Code Review Summary

Status: No Issues Found | Recommendation: Merge

Executive Summary

No code changed since the previous review at 8f40df485 (HEAD 00069da59 only contains an empty review-state commit); the published-token watch still clears the module drafts and disarms unmount persistence for every provider sign-in, and the attempt counter keeps late OTP refusals from re-appearing, so the previously raised findings remain resolved and no new issues or resource leaks were introduced.

Status: No Issues Found | Recommendation: Merge

Executive Summary

No code changed since the previous review at f2a415e; the published-token watch now clears the module drafts and suppresses unmount persistence for every provider sign-in, and the attempt counter keeps late OTP refusals from re-appearing, so the previously raised findings are resolved.

Previous review (commit f2a415e)

Status: No Issues Found | Recommendation: Merge

Executive Summary

The follow-up commit moves clearLoginDrafts() into the published-token watch, so every provider's sign-in drops the module drafts while the unmount guard keeps the persistence off; the prior stale-email finding is resolved and the change introduces no new issues.

Previous review (commit 81d7bb8)

Status: 1 Issue Found | Recommendation: Address before merge

Executive Summary

The token watch correctly keeps the signed-in mount from persisting the drafts, but neither path clears the in-memory email draft for non-device sign-ins, so a later login mount can still write the previous account's address to SecureStore.

apps/mobile/src/components/login-screen.tsx 87 Watching token suppresses the unmount write for every provider, but clearLoginDrafts() still runs only in the device-auth persistToken path. After an email-code, Apple, Google, or passkey sign-in the module draft keeps the typed email; on the next login mount (post sign-out) restoreLoginDrafts() returns empty so the draft is never overwritten, and the language globe's beforeReload or a rotation unmount then persists the previous account's address for the following mount to pre-fill. Clear the drafts when the published token appears.

apps/mobile/src/components/login-screen.tsx 113 The new signedInRef guard is set only in persistToken (device-auth approved). Email-code, Apple, Google, and passkey sign-ins call signIn from useNativeAuth/auth-context directly, which neither sets the ref nor clears the module draft, so the unmount cleanup still writes the typed email to SecureStore and the next login mount restores the previous account's address.

Review guidance: REVIEW.md from base branch main

@iscekic iscekic added the merge:human Substantive functional risk requires human review. label Oct 19, 2026
Two review fixes:

- A verify refusal that settles after the user edited the code, resent, or
went back no longer re-appears: each user step bumps an attempt counter and
only the attempt it belongs to may write its message.
- The unmount draft persistence stays off once the mount completed a sign-in,
so a typed email from an abandoned attempt cannot survive into the next
  login.

bot: End-to-end proof of the fixed code step on the Android emulator (local dev backend, local fake account drain-e2e2@example.com, non-production):

  1. Wrong code (000000) + "Verify code" → the localized refusal "That code is incorrect. Please try again." renders inline above the verify button; no toast needed.
  2. Correct code + "Verify code" → busy state (branded loading surface) while the token request settles; the server answered 200 on the first correct attempt — no resend was needed.
  3. Signed-in home after the first correct code (consent screen passed, optional analytics left off).

bot: Rotation proof on the same emulator run: with rotate-test@example.com typed on the login screen, the device was forced to landscape and back to portrait — the typed email stays in the field (screenshot taken after returning to portrait).

Typed email still present on the login screen after rotating to landscape and back

A completed sign-in previously only disarmed the unmount draft
persistence on the device-code path. Email-code, Apple, Google, and
passkey sign-ins publish their session token through the auth context
directly, so a typed address could survive into the next login mount
and pre-fill the previous account's field. The guard now watches the
published token, which every provider path sets.
Comment thread apps/mobile/src/components/login-screen.tsx
The token watch only suppressed the unmount write; the module email
draft stayed populated after an email-code, Apple, Google, or passkey
sign-in, so a later sign-out plus rotation or language reload could
persist the previous account's address again. The watch now clears the
drafts itself, which also makes it the single draft-clearing point for
all provider paths.

bot: Fixed in 14ef8fe. The published-token watch now calls clearLoginDrafts() itself when the token appears, so the module email draft is dropped for every provider path (device code, email code, Apple, Google, passkey), not just suppressed at unmount. The redundant clear inside the device-auth persistToken was removed, making the watch the single draft-clearing point. Regression suites pass (41 tests across login-screen and the mounted email flow).
