Summary

  • add reviewed release/X.Y.Z publication to GitHub and WordPress.org
  • replace push-to-master metadata sync with wordpress-org/<topic>
  • add version and release-artifact verification
  • commit a Node 10-compatible lockfile so release installs are reproducible
  • exclude release tooling/tests from the plugin package
  • open a master to develop back-sync PR after successful releases

Verification

  • changed workflows pass actionlint
  • release-tool tests pass
  • the legacy Node 10/Gulp package builds successfully
  • the resulting 1.3.2 ZIP passes the new artifact verifier
  • git diff --check passes

The existing Gulp build still reports its five historical JSHint warnings without failing. Merging this setup PR does not publish a release or WordPress.org update.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Release Process

    • Release versions and packages are checked before publication, including version consistency and required package contents.
    • Releases can be published to GitHub and WordPress.org through a verified workflow, followed by a back-sync pull request to develop.
    • Readme and asset updates are limited to designated publication pull requests.
  • Documentation

    • Updated contribution and deployment guidance to distinguish routine changes, releases, and WordPress.org updates.
  • Maintenance

    • PHP checks validate Composer configuration and lint PHP files; PHPUnit tests are no longer run in this workflow.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds release validation and ZIP checks, pull request gates for master, automated GitHub and WordPress.org release publication, and a workflow for synchronizing WordPress.org readme and assets. It also changes PHP CI checks and updates deployment documentation.

Changes

Release and publication

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release validation and packaging
.github/release-profile.json, bin/*, gulpfile.js, package.json, tests/release-tools.test.js, .gitignore
Adds release metadata, version validation, and ZIP content checks. The build excludes bin/ and tests/. Package scripts and tests cover the release tools.
PHP syntax CI
.github/workflows/phpunit-tests.yml
Replaces PHPUnit setup and execution with composer.json validation and PHP syntax checks.
Master pull request routing and publication gate
.github/workflows/pr-target-check.yml, .github/workflows/publication-gate.yml
Retargets unauthorized or out-of-scope pull requests to develop. The publication gate classifies release and metadata branches, checks paths and symlinks, and validates release artifacts.
Release publication and back-sync
.github/workflows/release.yml, readme.md
Authorizes merged release pull requests, builds and verifies the package, publishes it to GitHub and WordPress.org, then creates or reuses a master-to-develop pull request. The documentation describes the workflow and branch guidance.
WordPress.org readme and asset synchronization
.github/workflows/deploy-readme-assets.yml
Validates eligible merged metadata pull requests and synchronizes the readme and assets to WordPress.org. Supports retry dispatches.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 2e7e7

No actionable merge-blocking issue is established. The publication safeguards and the two reported workflow corrections support merging after normal checks; merging this setup does not itself publish a release or metadata update.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in bin/validate-release-version.js: Adds the Node.js script setup and synchronous file-reading and pattern-matching helpers; match throws when its pattern is absent.
  • observed — Modified behavior in bin/validate-release-version.js: Adds numeric comparison of the first three dot-separated version components, returning the first nonzero component difference or zero when all three match.
  • observed — Modified behavior in bin/validate-release-version.js: Adds changelog-heading date validation: parses month, day, and year captures, applies Gregorian leap-year rules, and rejects missing headings or dates outside the resulting month length.
  • observed — Modified behavior in bin/validate-release-version.js: Adds validateReleaseVersion: rejects versions outside digit-only X.Y.Z format and, when a previous version is supplied, rejects versions that compare less than or equal to it. It reads the package version, plugin header version, and README stable tag and throws if any differs from the requested version. It also requires a matching dated README changelog heading with a valid calendar date, then returns the version map.
