ChatGPT Pro can now ask native clarification questions without ask-pro treating the question preamble as a final answer. The shell returns AWAITING_ANSWERS with every question and its numbered choices; the calling agent resumes the same conversation with --answers JSON containing choices or free text.

The handoff supports one to three questions and multiline Other answers. If ChatGPT expires its cards despite a pause request, saved answers are sent through the existing composer in the same chat. Pending answers survive failures before submission, uncertain sends are not replayed automatically, and answer resumes reject changes to Temporary Chat mode.

Validation: 350 tests; build, lint, formatting, official plugin validator and package dry run passed. Live one-, two- and three-question canaries passed, including an installed-plugin canary and delayed-answer recovery. The requested Review Suite fast review is clean after fixing expired-card response capture and pre-send retry handling. PR CI passed on Ubuntu, macOS and Windows at eae972a.

Walkthrough

The change adds native clarification-question handoff and resumption. The browser detects question cards, stores their content, and accepts validated answers through --answers. Session status and CLI output expose pending questions. The browser also captures replies in the current search-unit message layout.

Native clarification-question handoff

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect and answer question cards
src/browser/actions/questions.ts, src/browser/actions/assistantResponse.ts, src/browser/constants.ts, src/browser/index.ts, tests/browser/assistantResponse.test.ts
The browser reads question cards, checks supplied answers, and submits choices or free text. Response capture reports pending questions. Selectors include current search-unit messages, and the browser is preserved when questions are reported.
Persist questions and resume sessions
src/ask-pro/questions.ts, src/ask-pro/session.ts, src/ask-pro/browserRunner.ts, src/browser/reattach.ts, tests/ask-pro/browserRunner.test.ts, tests/browser/reattach.test.ts
The runner saves question requests and validates answers, including request ID, answer count, and answer format. Reattachment submits answers and updates session state. Errors before submission leave the session awaiting answers; errors after submission starts are recorded as WAIT_TIMED_OUT.
Expose question state and answer workflow
bin/ask-pro-cli.ts, tests/ask-pro/cli.test.ts, README.md, AGENTS.md, CHANGELOG.md, docs/manual-tests.md, docs/windows-work.md, skills/ask-pro/SKILL.md
The CLI accepts answers from a UTF-8 file or piped stdin and displays pending question details and a resume command. It checks the saved Temporary Chat mode when a mode is explicitly specified. Documentation and tests cover the answer workflow and additional question rounds.

A malformed answers file can give confusing guidance, but the file is rejected. The established issue does not block merging.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Treat a missing evaluation value as a failure.

If evaluation.result.value is undefined, Line 207 throws a TypeError when it reads value.started. This can happen when the page navigates during the evaluation. The TypeError has an unclear message, and submissionState.started stays true. Validate the shape first. If the value is missing, throw a clear error.

Proposed fix
-  const value = evaluation.result.value as {
+  const value = evaluation.result.value as
+    | {
     questions: AssistantQuestion[] | null;
     started: boolean;
     error?: string;
-  };
+    }
+    | undefined;
+ if (!value || typeof value !== "object")
+    throw new Error("Cannot answer ChatGPT's questions: no result from the page.");
