Resolver endpoints with the same readable label could collapse into one benchmark row, lose their individual answer evidence, and leave saved recommendations ambiguous. Configured candidates now retain a stable CandidateId through C#, PowerShell, CLI reports, scoring, comparisons and saved selection. Score schema 3 preserves those identities and still reads schema 1/2 snapshots. Private DNSSEC anchor changes withhold comparison conclusions when local validation is enabled. Current-schema reuse requires the candidate ID and captured execution metadata; incomplete snapshots fail clearly. Use the probe/benchmark workflows to capture reusable selections.

This also fixes an mDNS shutdown race observed in Windows CI: a receive scheduled as UdpClient closes now reports disposal through the existing drain path. Linux discovery retains the full ordered resolver search list, including correct replacement by the last search or domain directive.

Qualification adds an independent BIND lab for private anchors, signed aliases, NSEC/NSEC3 denial, atomic UPDATE prerequisites and TSIG AXFR/IXFR over IPv4/IPv6. Native DoQ/HTTP/3 jobs exercise trust rejection, deadlines, cancellation, reuse and disposal on Windows, Linux and macOS. A private Linux network/mount lab exercises actual resolver discovery, IPv6, search suffixes and multicast rediscovery after adapter changes. Production dependencies are unchanged; BIND, Python and ASP.NET Core are test-only inputs.

Read-only native macOS LAN discovery observes IPv4/IPv6 non-local peers through the actual packaged core, with independent UDP and Bonjour evidence. Broader physical adapter/link/VPN qualification and macOS scoped resolver routing remain explicit gaps in PLAN.md. The isolated lab and same-host adapter tests retain their own proof boundaries. Public package publication and signing are separate release steps.

Validation: full modern suites, focused regression/owner checks, legacy reference-graph compilation, independent BIND/native macOS exchanges and the actual unsigned PowerShell module ZIP. Hosted platform jobs are required before merge.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Benchmark and probe results distinguish resolver configurations by stable identity, even when they share a display name. Recommendations, comparisons, and saved results use these identities for clearer matching.
    • Probe summaries identify candidates that returned differing answers, and PowerShell output includes candidate identities.
    • Saved score snapshots use schema version 3; earlier schema versions remain readable.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Multicast browsing on a selected network interface is more reliable, and receiving on a disposed socket reports the disposal correctly.
    • Linux DNS discovery now honors the complete ordered search list, with the last search or domain directive taking precedence.
  • Quality Improvements
    • Added automated qualification for authoritative DNS, encrypted DNS transports, and isolated Linux network behavior, with evidence captured across supported test platforms.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds stable resolver candidate IDs across benchmark and probe workflows, reports, comparisons, and saved selection. It adds BIND, native encrypted DNS, and isolated Linux network qualification. It also changes Linux resolver search-list handling and multicast receive behavior.

Changes: Resolver Candidate Identity

Layer / File(s) Summary
Derive and attach candidate identities
DnsClientX/ResolverCandidateIdentity.cs, DnsClientX/ResolverExecutionTarget.cs, DnsClientX/ResolverQueryAttemptResult.cs, DnsClientX/ResolverQueryExecutor.cs, DnsClientX/ResolverHealthWorkflow.cs, DnsClientX/DnsTransportCapabilities.cs
Resolver execution keys produce stable candidate IDs. Query results carry those IDs, benchmark runs allow matching display labels, and unsupported-transport counts and warnings distinguish candidates.
Carry identity through scoring and reports
DnsClientX/Resolver*Observation.cs, DnsClientX/Resolver*Evaluation*.cs, DnsClientX/Resolver*Report*.cs, DnsClientX/Resolver*Scorer.cs
Benchmark and probe evaluations and reports carry candidate IDs for results, recommendations, answer observations, and variants.
Persist, compare, and select candidates
DnsClientX/ResolverScore*.cs, DnsClientX/ResolverSelectionResult.cs, DnsClientX.Tests/ResolverSavedEndpointContractTests.cs, DnsClientX.Tests/ResolverScoreComparisonContractTests.cs, DnsClientX.Tests/CliResolverSelectionTests.cs, DnsClientX.Tests/DnsSecProviderRequestTests.cs, DnsClientX.Tests/ResolveDnsRequestTests.cs, DnsClientX.Tests/ResolverExecutionTargetResolverTests.cs
Score snapshots use schema version 3. Comparison and selection use candidate IDs when present, with label-based fallback for schema versions 1 and 2. Tests cover same-label endpoints and legacy snapshots.
Expose candidate IDs in reports and interfaces
DnsClientX/ResolverReportTextFormatter.cs, DnsClientX.PowerShell/CmdletTestDns*.cs, DnsClientX.Tests/Resolver*Tests.cs, DnsClientX.Tests/CliWorkflowJsonTests.cs, Module/Tests/BenchmarkConnectionMode.Tests.ps1, README.md, PLAN.md
Text, machine-readable, and PowerShell outputs include candidate IDs. Tests cover formatting, endpoint identity, saved recommendations, and schema compatibility.

DNS and Network Qualification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Qualify BIND authoritative behavior
.github/workflows/qualify-authoritative-network.yml, scripts/qualification/qualify-bind.py, DnsClientX.Tests/BindAuthoritativeTests.cs, scripts/qualification/README.md
A temporary BIND lab supports tests for DNSSEC validation, authenticated updates, and transfers over IPv4 and IPv6. The workflow runs the qualification on Ubuntu and macOS for .NET 8 and .NET 10.
Qualify native encrypted DNS
.github/workflows/qualify-quic-pool.yml, DnsClientX.Tests/NativeEncryptedDnsFixture.cs, DnsClientX.Tests/NativeEncryptedDnsTests.cs, DnsClientX.Tests/DnsClientX.Tests.csproj, DnsClientX.Tests/TestUtilities.cs, scripts/qualification/README.md
Tests exercise DoQ and HTTP/3 DNS queries, including trust validation, connection reuse, timeout, cancellation, and disposal. The workflow adds macOS and runs encrypted-DNS test filters.
Qualify isolated Linux networking
.github/workflows/qualify-authoritative-network.yml, scripts/qualification/qualify-linux-network.py, DnsClientX.Tests/IsolatedLinuxNetworkTests.cs, scripts/qualification/README.md
A private network and mount namespace supports tests for resolver search behavior, IPv6 discovery, resolver refresh, and interface-specific multicast browsing. The workflow records namespace and test artifacts.
Handle multicast socket disposal and routing
DnsClientX/ProtocolDnsWire/DnsWireResolveMulticast.Receive.cs, DnsClientX.Tests/DnsMulticastCorrelationTests.cs, DnsClientX.Tests/DnsServiceBrowseMulticastTests.cs
The receive path retains one socket reference and throws ObjectDisposedException when that reference is absent. Tests cover disposed clients and browsing through selected interfaces.

Linux Resolver Search Configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Apply resolv.conf search-list precedence
DnsClientX/SystemInformation.cs, DnsClientX.Tests/ParseResolvConfTests.cs, README.md, PLAN.md
Each later search or domain directive replaces the prior search list. On Linux, a nonempty resolv.conf search list takes precedence over interface suffixes.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 3c115

The change preserves resolver identity and updates Linux search-list behavior. The earlier Ubuntu BIND qualification startup issue is no longer present in the reviewed-head run, leaving no identified merge-blocking risk.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3c115

Resolver selection gains stronger endpoint identity checks, and the inspected search-domain and multicast changes preserve existing security controls. No introduced security concern was substantiated. Assurance remains limited for interrupted snapshot writes, broader network qualification and deployment-specific behavior.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected sensitive outcomes are resolver queries made by consuming applications and root-authority actions within qualification runners. A party able to replace a trusted score file can still supply a self-consistent endpoint and identity; the candidate hash checks consistency, not the writer's authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The changed Linux suffix source remains operating-system resolver configuration rather than DNS answer data. Fully qualified names bypass suffix expansion. For expanded candidates, the inspected consumer creates a query snapshot, rejects policy matches it cannot faithfully apply, and preserves policy-required DNSSEC flags.
  • observed — The inspected qualification workflows use pull-request triggers and request read-only repository contents permission. They run on hosted OS runners; no package-publication or signing authority is requested in these workflow definitions.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Snapshot storage retains direct-write persistence without transactional replacement or concurrency coordination. Selected queries retain caller-supplied DNSSEC validation settings. Both implementations are unchanged from the full PR base, so their recovery and policy-ownership limits are not attributed to this PR.

ResolverCandidateIdentity.GroupKey to normalize candidate IDs consistently with
ResolverBenchmarkScorer.NormalizeCandidate, and apply the same normalization to
the evaluated entry’s lookup key so IDs with surrounding whitespace resolve
successfully.
- Line 27: Update the grouping in ResolverBenchmarkReportBuilder to compare
nonempty candidate IDs case-sensitively while retaining case-insensitive
comparison only for legacy labels. Apply the same comparison rule to candidate
and answer keys in ResolverScoreComparer so distinct externally supplied IDs are
not merged or treated as equal.

Review comments at @DnsClientX/ResolverScoreSelector.cs:
- Around line 42-43: Update the resolver score selection flow around
`RecommendedCandidateId` so `RecommendedTarget` is used as a lookup fallback
only for schema 1 and 2 snapshots. For schema 3, reject snapshots missing
candidate identity or execution `Context` rather than resolving by label.
