Also fixes the underlying gap: git has never tracked a version bump past 2.9.3, while PyPI has published through 2.9.4 — every prior release was cut from an uncommitted local edit. This is the first version bump that's actually landing in git.

Version wasn't actually bumped by the packaging fix despite the commit message claiming it. Also: git has never recorded a version past 2.9.3 even though PyPI has 2.9.0-2.9.4 published — closing that drift here.
