Citerra is an environment for academic research and writing. It brings a document editor, a per-document source library, citation management, a reader for PDFs and a source-grounded assistant into one workspace, so research and writing continue without switching tools or losing context.
Citerra covers the research-writing process from the first source to the exported document.
- Write: LaTeX or a rich text surface with real pages, chosen per document. Journal and thesis templates, compile errors explained in plain words, and version history with a diff before restoring. Export as LaTeX, PDF, Word, Markdown or HTML.
- Research: Search the literature from inside the document and save a result to its library in one click. Open a source in the reader, mark passages, comment, and ask it a question answered with the page. Reading aids list a paper's sections, key sentences, defined terms and cited works. Figures and tables are answered from the figure itself, recordings are transcribed on upload, and scanned sources go through OCR.
- Cite: Sources, tags and metadata in one searchable library per document, fed by PDF, BibTeX, RIS, DOI, search results and reference managers. Insert citations from a picker, and the bibliography follows any CSL style. Select a claim and the library answers with the passage that supports it, and with the original where that passage is itself citing someone.
- Draft with the assistant: The assistant reads the paper and its library before it writes, and searches the literature when the library cannot answer. Every claim links to the passage it came from. Every edit arrives as a tracked change, accepted or rejected one at a time. It never invents a reference.
- Verify: A reviewer's report over the paper or one section, covering coverage, structure, argument, clarity and evidence. A citation check that tests every uncited statement against the library. Submission checks against a venue's length limit, display items and reference format.
- Work together: Co-authors in the same file with live cursors, comments and tracked changes. A library shared across a group, and organization-wide projects, roles and invitations.
- Beyond the tab: A browser extension that saves the page being read into a document's library, Word and Google Docs add-ins, two-way Git sync, and a Citerra MCP server so the writer's own agents reach the same library under the same scope.
Four principles decide how the features fit together.
- The document is the unit of work: An organization holds projects, a project holds documents, and a document is a self-contained workspace. Its editor, search, library, citations and assistant are scoped to it alone.
- Grounded and scoped assistance: The assistant retrieves only from the active document's library. No source reaches another document, project or organization, by design.
- One state, everywhere: Every module works on the same document state, so a citation the assistant adds appears in the bibliography immediately. Changes reach every co-author and device live, and every compile, save and named version is kept for thirty days.
- Hosted in the EU: Documents, sources and metadata are stored in Ireland and compiled in Frankfurt. Content is never used to train a model, and an organization can export everything it holds.
