Closes #330

Done — issue #330 is resolved, committed, and pushed on branch fix/330-address-parse-error-classification.

What changed (packages/core-ts/src/address/parse.ts): parse() now classifies failures instead of collapsing everything into INVALID_CHECKSUM/UNKNOWN_PREFIX. Validation order is:

S-prefixed input → REJECTED_SEED_KEY (rejected up front so seed material is never treated as an address)
input containing * → FEDERATION_ADDRESS_NOT_SUPPORTED
unknown prefix → UNKNOWN_PREFIX (unchanged behavior for garbage input like INVALID_ADDRESS)
wrong length → INVALID_LENGTH (56 for G/C, 69 for M)
non-Base32 characters (0, 1, 8, 9, symbols, spaces) → INVALID_BASE32
only then checksum validation → INVALID_CHECKSUM
Tests (parse.test.ts): added an "error classification" suite covering every code — seed keys (upper/lower), federation addresses, truncated/oversized G/C/M addresses, an M-prefixed string of G length, five non-Base32 character variants, bad-checksum G/C/M addresses, and unknown prefixes — asserting both the specific code and that input is preserved. Existing weak tests (seed, federation, empty string, short "G") now assert exact codes.

Verification:

parse.test.ts: 44/44 pass
Full core-ts suite (incl. routing + spec conformance runners): 216/216 pass
tsc --noEmit in packages/core-ts: clean
ESLint could not run: @typescript-eslint/parser is missing from the lockfile — a pre-existing environment gap unrelated to this change

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Address validation now reports more specific errors for seed keys, unsupported federation addresses, unknown prefixes, incorrect lengths, invalid characters, and checksum failures.
    • Empty and short addresses are classified more consistently, making validation feedback clearer.

…hecksum failures (Boxkit-Labs#330)

parse() only ever threw INVALID_CHECKSUM or UNKNOWN_PREFIX, so seed keys,
federation addresses, wrong-length and non-Base32 inputs were all
misclassified as generic checksum failures. It now inspects prefix and
structure before checksum validation: S-prefix inputs are rejected as
REJECTED_SEED_KEY to prevent private key leakage, name*domain inputs as
FEDERATION_ADDRESS_NOT_SUPPORTED, wrong lengths as INVALID_LENGTH (56 for
G/C, 69 for M), and non-Base32 characters as INVALID_BASE32. Added
comprehensive test coverage for each error code.

📝 Walkthrough

The address parser now checks sensitive inputs, federation syntax, prefixes, lengths, and Base32 characters before checksum validation. It reports distinct error codes for these cases. Tests cover the classifications and reuse valid address fixtures.

The parser checks seed keys, federation addresses, prefixes, lengths, and Base32 characters before checksum validation. Tests assert the resulting error codes and cover valid G, C, and M address fixtures.

Explanation

Issue #330 requires specific classification for seed keys, federation addresses, invalid lengths, invalid Base32 input, checksum failures, and unknown prefixes, plus comprehensive tests. packages/core-ts/src/address/parse.ts checks these conditions before checksum validation and preserves the original input in each AddressParseError. parse.test.ts covers the required error codes, G/C/M length cases, invalid characters, seed keys, federation inputs, checksums, and unknown prefixes.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes are limited to address parsing validation and related tests in packages/core-ts/src/address/parse.ts and parse.test.ts. Shared fixtures and the test helper support the classification coverage. No unrelated change is shown.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Validate Base32 characters in the original input.

The character ı (U+0131) is not Base32, but toUpperCase() converts it to I. Replacing an I in VALID_G with ı therefore passes this check and detect, so parse accepts the input instead of reporting INVALID_BASE32. Check address against an explicit ASCII alphabet, including lowercase letters, before validating the normalized address. (unicode.org)
