Add OME-Zarrs to BigDataViewer windows opened by other tools #160

Open

Description

@stefanhahmann

Follow-up to #127. #150 covered BDV windows this plugin opened: the opener "BigDataViewer (add to active window)" adds to the active one, and an OME-Zarr dropped onto the viewer is added to that window.

Still open: the same for BDV windows opened elsewhere (e.g. Plugins › BigDataViewer › Open XML/HDF5, BigWarp, other plugins). Today, if such a window was active, "add to active window" opens a new BDV, and dropping onto it does nothing.

Potential solution: the public API of BDV core currently has no way to get from a ViewerPanel to the BdvHandle (or classic BigDataViewer) that owns it. bigdataviewer/bigdataviewer-core#227 suggests a possible way how to include this into the BDV core API. Alternative ways are also possible. Needs to be discussed with BDV maintainers.

Open questions

  • Java 8: we currently pin bigdataviewer-core 10.6.8 for Fiji-Stable, since this was the last BDV release compatible with java 8. Having this feature would perhaps mean, this plugin can only support Fiji-Latest any longer.
  • Possible alternative upstream: a BDV extension point for drop handlers. It's cleaner but a much bigger ask.
