feat(key-analytics): scan every non-empty logical database and honor dbIndex - #544
Conversation
…dbIndex Customer feedback (BetterDB 0.50.0): instances whose keys live outside db0 produced "No keys found in database, skipping analytics" on every scan, and the configured dbIndex was accepted but never applied to the connection. - Pass config.dbIndex through createAdapter() into the iovalkey `db` option, so connections (and the CLI client) actually SELECT the configured database. - collectKeyAnalytics now discovers non-empty logical databases via INFO keyspace and scans each one, visiting sibling databases through short-lived clients so the shared client never switches databases. Falls back to the old single-db scan when the keyspace section is unavailable, and keeps scanning the remaining databases when one fails. - The port returns one KeyAnalyticsResult per database; agent connections keep their single-db scan (normalized to the array shape) until the agent binary learns multi-db. - db is now a stored dimension: key_pattern_snapshots and hot_key_stats gain a `db` column (lazy-migrated, DEFAULT 0 backfill) across sqlite/turso and postgres; snapshots merge per (db, pattern) instead of folding databases together, hot/largest/composite keys carry the db of each key, and key identity (dedupe, composite ranking, rank deltas) includes the database. - Summary/patterns/trends/hot-keys/largest-keys/composite-keys endpoints accept a `db` filter; new GET /key-analytics/databases lists the databases with stored analytics. The Key Analytics page gets a database selector (shown only when more than one database has data) and per-row db badges. Covered by unit tests (multi-db discovery/scan, dbIndex pass-through, per-db snapshots and ranking, storage filters and migration) plus a live e2e against the valkey container reproducing the empty-db0 report.
…aw NUL byte The embedded \x00 made git treat the file as binary.
* fix(api): avoid int4 overflow in key analytics weighted avg memory query
SUM(avg_memory_bytes * sampled_key_count) multiplies two int4 columns,
which Postgres evaluates as int4 and can overflow to "integer out of
range" on large patterns. Cast avg_memory_bytes to bigint first.
* fix(api): harden multi-db key analytics scan and connection dbIndex handling
- collectKeyAnalytics: wrap the own-db scan in the same try/catch as the
scratch-client branch so a failure on the connection's own database no
longer aborts the loop and discards sibling results.
- collectKeyAnalytics: attach an error listener to each scratch client
(iovalkey otherwise logs raw errors via console.error), explicitly
SELECT after connecting so a SELECT iovalkey would silently swallow
(e.g. restricted ACL) surfaces as a caught per-db failure instead of
silently scanning db0, and skip a database when the SSH tunnel is down
instead of dialing the raw host.
- doConnect: explicitly SELECT when dbIndex > 0 so an invalid dbIndex
(out of range, or illegal in cluster mode) surfaces as a connection
error instead of silently running on db0.
- testConnection: thread dbIndex into the adapter it builds, so Test
Connection validates the same logical database the saved connection
will use.
- adoptChild: force dbIndex to 0 when adopting a connection as a cluster
member, matching addManagedChild, since SELECT > 0 is illegal in
cluster mode.
* fix(api): stable ordering and per-connection grouping for key pattern queries
- getKeyPatternSnapshots (sqlite + postgres): ORDER BY timestamp DESC had
no tiebreaker, so when one collection writes patterns x dbs rows at a
single timestamp, LIMIT truncated an arbitrary subset of them. Add
db ASC, pattern ASC as tiebreakers.
- getKeyPatternTrends (sqlite + postgres): GROUP BY timestamp merged rows
from different connections together when connectionId is not provided.
Group by (timestamp, connection_id) in that case so each connection
keeps its own series, same as before the multi-db change; keep plain
GROUP BY timestamp when a connectionId scopes the query.
* perf(api): index key_pattern_snapshots(connection_id, db)
The database selector polls SELECT DISTINCT db every 60s; back it with
a composite index on (connection_id, db) in both adapters. Added after
the db column's own migration/ALTER so it only runs once the column
exists.
* fix(web): scope hot-key baseline and pattern selection to the active db
- useBaselineHotKeys: accept a db option, pass it to getHotKeys and
include it in the query key; KeyAnalytics now passes the active
dbFilter so rank deltas compare the same logical database instead of
mixing dbs into one baseline.
- KeyAnalytics: the patterns table renders one row per (db, pattern) but
selection tracked only the pattern name, so selecting a pattern that
exists in more than one db highlighted/opened the wrong row. Selection
state now carries { db, pattern }, compared on both fields for the row
highlight and the detail lookup; the detail card title shows the db
when the connection has more than one.
- KeyAnalytics: reset the db filter to 'all' whenever the active
connection changes, so switching connections doesn't keep querying
with a stale numeric db filter while its database list reloads, or
silently snap back from 'all' if the remembered db happens to also
exist on the new connection.
* test(api): cover own-db failure isolation, scratch SELECT hardening, and stable snapshot ordering
- unified.adapter.spec.ts: a failing own-db scan no longer discards
sibling results; a scratch client whose SELECT is rejected (e.g.
restricted ACL) is treated as a failed scan instead of silently
tagging its keys with the wrong db; a sibling db is skipped rather
than dialing the raw host when the SSH tunnel is down.
- key-analytics-multi-db.spec.ts: snapshots tied on timestamp are
returned in a deterministic (db, pattern) order instead of an
arbitrary LIMIT-truncated subset; trends from different connections
stay separate series when no connectionId scopes the query.
* fix(api): disconnect the client when a post-connect step fails
doConnect's catch block only tore down the SSH tunnel, not the client
itself. The new dbIndex SELECT (and the pre-existing detectCapabilities
call) run after the socket has already connected and authenticated, so
a failure there left a live, authenticated session open on a direct
connection — e.g. every failed Test Connection attempt with an invalid
or cluster-illegal dbIndex built and abandoned its own adapter. Disconnect
and discard the client on any connect failure, not just a tunneled one.

The core multi-db scan looks sound: the shared client never switches db, other dbs go through short-lived clients with an explicit SELECT (so an ACL-blocked db fails on its own instead of silently scanning db0), clients are closed in finally, keyspace parsing keeps only non-empty dbs, the migrations are idempotent with a 0 backfill, and the new endpoint is licence-gated. Mostly side effects of dbIndex now actually being applied, which I think need addressing before merge (1 and 2 most of all). Note that only CLA / CodeRabbit / Bugbot reported on this PR, no build or test jobs; the touched specs pass locally (15 suites, 225 tests).

A busy db0 can take all 50 slots, so selecting db1 shows "no hot keys" although it has some, and the ranks come back with gaps (3, 7, 12). Rank per db, or keep a per-db top-N alongside the global one.proprietary/key-analytics/key-analytics.service.ts: +1 to Bugbot ongetKeyAnalyticsSummary: the latest timestamp is picked per pattern only, so when one db's scan fails (now counted as success) the sibling dbs' rows for that pattern drop out of the headline totals.
…follow-ups - Agent: tag COLLECT_KEY_ANALYTICS results with the connected logical db (--valkey-db) so agent analytics stop defaulting to db0; older agents without the field still default downstream. - Rank hot/largest/composite keys per logical database instead of one global top-N, so a quiet db is not crowded out by a busier sibling and per-db ranks stay contiguous; one shared capturedAt keeps the composite freshness guard atomic. - Share one dbScopedIdentity() helper for the (db, name) identity used by dedupe, composite ranking and the web UI, replacing three hand-rolled encodings with two different separators. - listKeyspaceDatabases: reuse the central INFO keyspace parser (getInfoParsed/MetricsParser) instead of a second regex. - Cluster adoption: rebuild the live adapter after forcing db0 so the fix applies immediately instead of on the next incidental reconnect.
…multi-db # Conflicts: # apps/api/src/storage/adapters/sqlite.adapter.ts
Grouping by pattern alone pinned one MAX(timestamp) per pattern, so a partial collection (one database scanned, a sibling's scan failed) moved that timestamp forward for only some databases and silently dropped the sibling's last row from the summary, undercounting the headline totals. Group by (pattern, db) and match rows on the (pattern, db, timestamp) triple in both sqlite and postgres; the triple pins its database, so the separate db re-filter is gone. Covered by a partial-collection regression test.

Bugbot's summary finding is fixed in 4f020b9: the latest-snapshot pin is now per (pattern, db) in both sqlite and postgres, with a partial-collection regression test. Master is merged in (one conflict in sqlite runMigrations, resolved keeping both the db-column migration and master's connection_id ordering change). |

…can budget Review feedback from Petar and CodeRabbit on the dbIndex side effects: - Connect no longer fails when SELECT on the configured dbIndex is rejected (index out of range, ACL without +select, pre-Valkey-9 cluster): it falls back to db0 with a prominent warning, so stored configs with a stray dbIndex — harmless before the field was honored — cannot take whole connections down on upgrade. getActiveDbIndex() exposes the actual database; testConnection stays strict and fails validation when the requested index is not active. - adoptChild no longer force-resets dbIndex to 0: whether SELECT works on a cluster node is the server's call (legal on Valkey 9 multi-db clusters), so the connect-time fallback decides at runtime instead of the registry clobbering the stored config. - Sampled scans share one sampleSize budget across logical databases, split proportionally to each database's key count (with a floor), so 16 populated databases no longer cost 16x the SCAN and per-key pipeline work per collection. Deep scans still visit everything by definition. - The patterns view scales its row limit with the database count, so db0 cannot fill the page and push sibling databases out of 'All databases'.
…t an OR chain The summary expanded one (pattern = ? AND db = ? AND timestamp = ?) term per kept pair, so bind parameters grew with patterns x databases and could exceed the engine's limit (32766 SQLite / 65535 Postgres) on pattern-heavy keyspaces, failing getKeyAnalyticsSummary outright. JOIN the latest rows against a grouped (pattern, db, MAX(timestamp)) subquery instead: constant parameter count, one round trip less, and the connection_id predicate stays on the outer rows. Regression-tested with an 11k-pattern keyspace that breaks the old shape.
Scaling the UI limit with the database count was a band-aid: rows still sort db0-first within a collection, so a pattern-heavy db0 (or more than four populated databases under the 400 cap) kept crowding later databases out of the All-databases view. Apply the limit per logical database in storage via a ROW_NUMBER() window partitioned by db (sqlite + postgres), keep the plain global limit when a db filter pins a single database, and drop the UI scaling. The result stays bounded at limit x populated databases, and no database can hide a sibling.

Thanks, this round fixes most of it: per-db hot-key ranking, no forced db0 on adoption, a shared proportional scan budget, the summary pinned per (pattern, db) via the grouped join, and now the per-db pattern limit in storage. Full CI is green. Two things I'd still fix before merge, plus two small follow-ups:
…of a full-history window The ROW_NUMBER() window had to number and sort the connection's entire snapshot history on every unfiltered patterns request — including the web's 60s poll — where the old ORDER BY timestamp DESC LIMIT scan stopped early via the index. Keep the per-database limit but restore early termination: enumerate the populated databases, then run one LIMITed scan per database (a JS loop on sqlite, a LATERAL join on postgres), each walking the upgraded (connection_id, db, timestamp DESC, pattern ASC) index in order with no sort step (verified with EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN: index SEARCH, no temp b-tree). The index upgrade drops this branch's unreleased two-column version.
…ect race, re-rank merged hot keys Second round of review feedback: - addConnection now rejects a dbIndex the server refuses to SELECT (same check and message as testConnection), so Save cannot silently persist a connection that monitors db0 while claiming db N. The connect-time fallback remains for connections that are already stored, where availability wins. - doConnect distinguishes a server-side SELECT rejection (ERR/NOPERM/...) from a transport error: iovalkey records the SELECT target when the command is sent and re-selects it on auto-reconnect, so a connection dropped mid-SELECT now fails the connect instead of marking activeDbIndex 0 while the client reconnects onto db N — which would have mislabeled and duplicated scans. On a genuine rejection the client is pinned back with SELECT 0 so a reconnect cannot silently retry the rejected index. - The All-databases hot-keys view re-ranks the merged list by the underlying signal (LFU frequency, then idle recency) and numbers rows by display position, instead of interleaving every database's rank 1, 1, 2, 2, ... with repeated top-10 highlights. Db-filtered views keep the stored per-db ranks. Largest keys were already re-ranked globally by memory server-side.

Thanks, the per-db LIMITed scans on the new (connection_id, db, timestamp DESC, pattern ASC) index fix the full-history window. One remaining full scan on the same path:
… scan Neither SQLite nor Postgres skip-scans DISTINCT over an index prefix, so the SELECT DISTINCT db that fed the per-db patterns queries and the 60s-polled database selector still walked every index entry for the connection — O(history) per request even though the per-db scans themselves terminate early. Replace all four sites (patterns enumeration and getKeyAnalyticsDatabases, sqlite + postgres) with a recursive-CTE loose index scan: one MIN(db) seek per populated database (verified with EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN: covering-index SEARCH with connection_id=? AND db>? per step), making the whole unfiltered patterns path bounded by the result size rather than the retention window.

Thanks for working through all of it: rejected dbIndex handled on save and on connect, per-db hot-key ranking with a merged re-rank, shared scan budget, per-(pattern, db) summary, and bounded per-db pattern queries with the loose index scan. LGTM.

Re-checked a9b4b50. The db label, the full-capture fetch, the per-db composite guard and the global hot-key re-rank all look right, and the CTE/clamp/sweep dedupe is behaviour-neutral. Three things left:
apps/api/src/mcp/mcp.controller.ts:414: The MCPinstance/:id/hot-keysendpoint still callsstorageClient.getHotKeys({ latest: true, limit })directly, bypassing the new global re-rank inKeyAnalyticsService.getHotKeys. Storage orders bycaptured_at DESC, rank ASCwith per-db ranks, so on a multi-db instance the MCP hot-keys tool still returns interleaved rank-1-of-every-db rows and truncates by per-db rank — the exact bug this commit fixes for the REST/UI path. Agents asking for the top 10 hot keys on a 16-db instance can get db15's coldest tracked key over db0's 2nd hottest.docs/prometheus-metrics.md: The label table (around lines 435–441) still listspatternandkey, typefor these families, and the keysize_bucket_keys row still says the per-pattern families "carry only apatternlabel". The cardinality row (170–171) also still describes P/K as patterns/keys rather than (pattern, db)/(key, type, db) series. The keyspace dashboard's legends will now show duplicate names across dbs unless{{db}}is added.

The new db label is the bare index (db="0"), but betterdb_keysize_bucket_keys (which the comment above says this matches) emits db="db0" from INFO keysizes. In Prometheus a on(db) / group_left join between the per-key or per-pattern families and the bucket family never matches. (OTLP happens to agree because perDb strips the prefix there.) Pick one form — probably normalise the bucket label to the bare index, or emit db<N> here — before the label ships.
- mcp: the instance/:id/hot-keys endpoint called storageClient.getHotKeys
directly, bypassing the global re-rank, so the agent tool still returned
interleaved per-db ranks and truncated by per-db rank on multi-db
instances. Route it through a shared rankHotKeys helper (extracted to
@betterdb/shared and reused by KeyAnalyticsService.getHotKeys) that
fetches the full capture, re-ranks globally, and renumbers before the limit.
- prometheus: emit the keysize bucket db label as the bare index ("0") to
match the per-pattern (pattern, db) and per-key (key, type, db) families,
so a PromQL join on db actually matches (was "db0").
- otel: perDb now accepts both the bare index and the raw "db0" form, so the
normalized keysize bucket still exports (the strict ^db\d+$ match would
have dropped the series).
- docs: update prometheus-metrics.md label table and cardinality contract
for the new db dimension and the bare-index bucket label.
- tests: cover the MCP global re-rank and the bare-index bucket label.
…nking/labels
- getCompositeKeys: fetch the whole capture and renumber globally so the
all-databases composite list is no longer interleaved by per-db rank or
truncated by the storage limit (the gap the hot/largest surfaces already fixed)
- prometheus: normalize the keyspace families (betterdb_db_keys /
_keys_expiring / _avg_ttl_seconds) to the bare logical-database index, so
every db-labelled family (keyspace, key-analytics, keysize) shares one form
and a PromQL join on `db` matches
- rankHotKeys: dedupe multi-snapshot reads by each key's HOTTEST observation
(first after sorting), not by max memory, and guard the slice against a
negative limit
- getCompositeKeys freshness guard: run the per-db newest-capture lookups in
parallel and precompute each db's newest composite in one pass (was N+1 +
repeated Math.max)
- dedupe: extract one compareHotness policy used by both buildHotKeyRows and
rankHotKeys; drop the duplicate shared memory-dedupe; collapse the three
10_000 fetch-cap constants into a single shared KEY_ANALYTICS_FETCH_CAP
- dashboard: add {{db}} to the key_pattern legend so multi-db series are
distinguishable
- docs: update the db-label examples to the bare index
- tests: cover the composite global renumber + fetch-cap and the hottest-wins
range dedupe
- getCompositeKeys: for an all-databases latest/oldest read, fetch each
database's OWN latest composite capture instead of relying on storage
`latest` (which pins one global MAX captured_at and drops a database whose
latest composite capture is older, e.g. under a partial scan)
- getCompositeKeys: dedupe a (db,key) that recurs across snapshots to its most
recent observation, matching getHotKeys/getLargestKeys, so a range read does
not spend the limit on duplicate rows
- getCompositeKeys: re-rank the merged set through the composite scorer with a
single global dimension-max so the cross-database order is a real comparable
composite score, not an arbitrary storage interleave (single-db reads keep
their stored per-db rank)
- getLargestKeys: guard the limit slice with Math.max(0, limit) so a negative
limit returns [] like its siblings, not all-but-N rows
- dashboard: use db{{db}} on the db_keys_expiring / db_avg_ttl_seconds legends
so they read "db0" (consistent with the other panels) after the bare-index
label change, not "0"
- tests: cover per-db-latest retention, global composite re-rank, and the
largest-keys negative-limit guard

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winReject non-numeric
dbvalues instead of silently widening the query.
safeIntreturnsundefinedfor a malformeddbsuch asdb=abc, or for a repeateddbparameter that arrives as an array. The endpoint then silently returns data for all databases.parseIntalso accepts trailing text, so1abcbecomes 1. A negative value such as-1is passed to storage. A caller who sends a baddbreceives wrong-scope data without an error.Add a dedicated
parseDbhelper. It must accept only a single string that matches^\d+$. Pass an absent value asundefined. ThrowBadRequestExceptionfor an invalid value.Proposed helper
+function parseDb(value: unknown): number | undefined { + if (value === undefined) return undefined; + if (typeof value !== 'string' || !/^\d+$/.test(value.trim())) { + throw new BadRequestException('db must be a non-negative integer'); + } + return parseInt(value, 10); +}Then replace each
safeInt(db)call withparseDb(db). ImportBadRequestExceptionfrom@nestjs/common.Based on learnings: validate that a query value is a single non-array string and reject empty or invalid values before numeric coercion.

Addresses bugbot/coderabbit findings on the composite rewrite: - getCompositeKeys now issues one db-pinned query per database for a connection-scoped latest/oldest read (enumerating databases via getKeyAnalyticsDatabases), so storage scopes MAX/MIN(captured_at) per db. This fixes two bugs: a db-filtered latest read no longer skips the freshness guard (it now runs on the single pinned db), and an `oldest` read no longer takes the minimum within the newest, cap-truncated window — it reads each database's true oldest capture via a pinned MIN query. - getHotKeys / getLargestKeys / getCompositeKeys default a missing limit to the collector's per-db top-N (50) instead of returning the whole fetch cap, so a direct service caller that omits a limit keeps the prior default. - tests: cover the db-filtered guard, the pinned oldest query, and per-db pinned latest across databases.

The composite read enumerated per-database targets via getKeyAnalyticsDatabases, which only reads key_pattern_snapshots. Composite rows live in hot_key_stats, so when the two tables diverge — e.g. pattern-only retention pruning, or a database that never wrote a pattern row — the per-db loop skipped that database and its stored composites disappeared. Add getHotKeyDatabases(connectionId) to the storage port (sqlite, postgres, memory) returning the distinct logical databases present in hot_key_stats, and have getCompositeKeys enumerate from it instead.

A customer on 0.50.0 reported two problems with instances that keep their keys outside db0:
Changes:
Known limit: agent connections still scan only their connected database; fixing that needs an agent protocol change.
Tested with unit suites across adapter/service/storage and an e2e against a live Valkey holding keys only in db13/db14, reproducing the report.
Note
Medium Risk
Touches connection SELECT semantics, heavier multi-DB SCAN work, storage schema/migrations, and Prometheus label shape changes that can break existing dashboards or queries.
Overview
Multi-database key analytics and honored
dbIndex— connections now SELECT the configured logical database on connect (with db0 fallback for bad indexes on live links, strict errors on test/save), and key analytics discovers every non-empty DB viaINFO keyspace, scans siblings without moving the shared client, and returns one result per database with a shared sample budget.dbis a first-class dimension end-to-end: snapshots and hot-key rows persist and query by logical database; summaries/trends aggregate per(pattern, db); APIs and the Key Analytics UI add optionaldbfilters, a database list endpoint, and badges; Prometheus/MCP export and rank hot/largest keys globally while labeling series with baredb("0"not"db0") so identical keys/patterns in different DBs do not collide.Storage/query behavior changes include per-database row limits on unfiltered pattern reads, optimized DB enumeration, and agent/cloud adapters tagging single-DB collects with
db. Minor: sharedclampTopNfor env top-N validation.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit edb7652. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.

Release note
Connections now honor their configured database index: clients SELECT it on connect, and Key Analytics scans every non-empty logical database. If a stored dbIndex is invalid for the server (out of range, ACL without +select, cluster mode before Valkey 9), the connection logs a warning and runs on db0 instead of failing — use Test Connection to validate an index explicitly. Hot/largest/composite keys are ranked per database, and sampled scans share one sample budget across databases.
