Enable Copilot Support for AgentOps Toolkit #25

Closed

Description

Objective

Define and enable how GitHub Copilot (VS Code and CLI) discovers and uses AgentOps Toolkit within repositories.

Scope

Covers the integration model and its implementation, including repo-local configuration, guidance, and potential future extensions (e.g., skills, marketplace assets).

Tasks

  • Define supported environments (VS Code, Copilot CLI)

  • Define integration model (repo-local instructions, extensibility for skills/marketplace)

  • Define repo structure (.github/instructions/*.instructions.md or equivalent)

  • Extend agentops init to:

    • detect existing .github configuration
    • generate guidance files (e.g., agentops.instructions.md)
    • avoid overwriting existing files
  • Ensure idempotent behavior (safe re-run)

  • Define and embed Copilot guidance:

    • when to use AgentOps Toolkit
    • how to invoke agentops CLI
    • expected workflows
  • Define developer workflow (install → init → use)

  • Validate behavior in:

    • VS Code Copilot
    • Copilot CLI

Acceptance Criteria

  • Integration model is clearly defined and extensible
  • Guidance is added without overwriting existing configuration
  • Instruction files are generated correctly and modular
  • Re-running init is safe and does not duplicate configuration
  • Copilot can infer correct CLI usage from guidance
  • Developer workflow is clear end-to-end

I've defined the folder to be used for importing skills - https://github.com/Azure/agentops/tree/main/plugins/agentops/skills
