Hotkey for only opening a directory - not basic confirm

I find my self using the "L" key to do navigation to get down the next folder, which works great, but if i end up on a file and hit L it opens the file, then loosing focus and having to close the new app. Would there be a way to have the logic be: Press L -> If folder open/drill down OR if file do nothing. Then alllow the enter key be the "open file" type action?

I might have missed it if there was a way to do this, but I could not see it in the config anywhere.
