TL;DR;

Sign up and wait for us to announce our participation in March 2027. We don’t even know whether GSoC will run in 2027, and we’re not sure we will participate, but here’s what to expect based on past timelines.

Note ⚠️: we get a lot of requests from GSoC participants. If you want a chance to participate in the program with us, follow those instructions. It’s crucial for us to keep this manageable. If you don’t follow this guidance and cause extra work for us, you’ll get a warning, a ban, or just we won’t select you for participation. See our GSoC AI policy for more info.

To know once we participate, we’ll announce on our This week in Wagtail newsletter, Mastodon account, LinkedIn page, Bluesky account, and at any Wagtail events we have in early 2027, and on the Wagtail Slack. And here :)

Timeline

• In early January, we’ll know whether GSoC is happening at all or not.
• In late January, we’ll be able to share whether Wagtail is applying to participate, or not.
• In late February, we’ll be able to share whether we’ve been accepted to participate.
• In mid-March – we’ll have a list of provisional project ideas and start the contributor application period.

2027 projects

At this stage all I can say for sure is we’ll want to have two to four GSoC contributors, with four to ten mentors, representing a good diversity of genders, backgrounds, countries. We’ll be looking for women / non-binary contributors in particular.

As far as hot topics for projects, we forecast: accessibility, sustainability, AI, performance, deployments, code health, security.

Hi! I am interested in working with this organization . I have some experience with Python/Django and JavaScript, and I have previously contributed to open source projects (including a security fix during GSSoC 2026). Could you direct me to any relevant documentation or files to get started?
