i've noticed a trend of past gsoc projects being from existing issues, would it be safe to assume if we're able to take up some complex issue and able to pinpoint the reason for it and via some slight experiments showcase the fixes in the proposal, would that be a good way to build our proposal!?!

@Nightwing-77 yep, this is definitely a good way to do. You could pick one issue that seems particularly gnarly, or propose tackling a group of issues around a specific theme. For example we have lots of feature requests for our sitemap support.

I think this would be a good fit for the smaller project sizes in particular (90h, 175h).

Hi @thibaudcolas,

I have been exploring the wagtail-newsletter repo, and I found several issues that are interesting to me for a 175-hour GSoC project.

There are several "future concepts" that were planned but not yet implemented, and I would like to work on some of those:

• Simple SMTP backend (#46): The current implementation only works with Mailchimp, which can be limiting for small organizations. Implementing SMTP would allow for free and cheaper options.

• Configure multiple campaign backends (#61)

• Default template name {app_label}/{model_name}_newsletter.html (#60)

• Load the campaign panel asynchronously (#43)

I would like to know if this project is a priority for Wagtail at this time, and if this scope seems realistic for a medium-sized project.

Yes I think there’s a good scope for a medium project there. It’s not super high priority but I could see ourselves making it work!
