I am getting this during execution of a script using dspace-rest-python:

Could not retrieve short-lived token

I'm not sure if it's logging that should be set to debug level, or if it's an error.

that means the short-lived bitstream download token was missing or the response was invalid... I could certainly do some better error logging here as it doesn't currently show status, or any response text, etc. If the session is valid, and the user is authorized to view the bitstream, the short-lived tokens should be retrieved OK.

Thanks @kshepherd. I was using the download_bitstream method to download bitstreams from a DSpace 7.6.3 repository as an unauthenticated user. It was several hundred items, so perhaps those ones had restrictive policies and this would be expected.

As far as user experience I think the message should be updated to say permission denied or whatever, or reduced to INFO severity. In the DSpace user interface you can often see a PDF exists for an item, but can't download it.

yes, from the point of view of a large script, i'd want to be able to easily log all the failed download IDs / URLs / reasons so i could investigate, or requeue, or something... so i agree at least a useful INFO message (which also will clarify whether it's a regular authZ rejection or some actual failure)
