Sovereign infrastructure for AI agents, built in Europe
I'm Raf Lefever, a distributed-systems engineer in Leuven, Belgium, with three decades on the BEAM and the systems around it. Macula is what I build: an open peer-to-peer mesh in Erlang and Rust that runs over QUIC, does its own discovery and routing, and needs no US cloud anywhere in the data path.
What's live today
- A station fleet across Europe: Frankfurt, Paris, Milan, Stockholm, Helsinki, Nuremberg, Amsterdam. Anyone can join from a laptop behind NAT.
@macula-io/mcpon npm: an MCP server that gives Claude Code, Cursor, opencode and any other agent harness shared memory, identity and messaging across a team's agents.macula-cli: one Go binary to call, publish, watch and diagnose the mesh from scripts.- SDKs in Erlang, Go, Rust, PHP, TypeScript and .NET, all built against the same wire protocol.
- Hecate services running on the mesh: shared memory, a knowledge graph, agent identity, an agora.
All of it is open source under Apache-2.0 and MIT.
Where your money goes
- The station fleet. A handful of small boxes at Hetzner and Linode, paid monthly out of my own pocket. This is the first thing sponsorship covers.
- Time on the SDKs, the CLI and the MCP server: releases, docs, answering issues.
- Nothing else. No ads, no VC, no exit. Macula is meant to end up in commons ownership, a foundation or a cooperative, not on a cap table.
Why it matters
Every agent-memory product on the market today is a US SaaS. If your agents' shared memory, identity and coordination should stay in Europe and under your control, that infrastructure has to exist as a commons. Sponsoring it is how it stays up.
Every euro keeps a station online. Thank you.
