These are similar to (exactly the same?) as with python 3.12
And I haven't been able to get it to build with 3.10 or 3.11.

I'm guessing that both the build issues and the errors are due to python/numpy/some_other_libs version issues:
It won't build with the new version, and it won't quite run with the older versions ....
That is -- there is presumably some combination of python version and numpy version that will both build and pass the tests.
@socolofs: I was hoping to tag a version / do a release before doing any more packaging updates, to save it. in its current state, but if its current state is semi-broken, maybe there is no point?
But if you know what versions of things last worked, you could pin those here and then we can do a release with those versions, and then move on.
