Some questions

• how are push notifications supposed to work? I can't figure out how to turn them on
• Is this a webapp, on my phone it gave me an option to install but on pc in devtools it says no manifest detected. And if it is notifications don't work on my phone as well and the icon is very blury
• Even when I have the webmail tab open and focused new emails take a min to show up, can we not use push notifications on stalwart, it would be great if we could make updates instant like gmail

Good questions, let me go through them:

Push notifications: Not implemented yet. The app uses JMAP EventSource for server-sent events, but browser push notifications (via service worker) aren't wired up. It's on the roadmap.

PWA / installable app: There's no web manifest right now, which explains the blurry icon and the missing install prompt on desktop. Adding proper PWA support (manifest + service worker) is planned.

Real-time updates: The app does use JMAP push (EventSource/SSE) so new emails should appear without manual refresh. If there's a delay of a full minute, something might be off with your EventSource connection. Could you check the Network tab in devtools for an eventsource request and see if it's connected?

I checked the devtools and it isn't using eventsource though its just sending a /get requestion in intervals

The session request does give a eventsource url though
but theres no request to it or errors in console

Coming back to this with a correction, because your devtools evidence was right and my earlier reply was wrong.

The client does not consume the EventSource endpoint today. The session advertises it, but EventSource can't send an Authorization header, so the client falls back to a 15 second state poll. That's what you saw: interval requests, no eventsource entry. I should have checked before answering in March; sorry about that.

Where this is going: v1.5.3 (today) fixed a bug where the poll silently died after creating or deleting a folder, so the polling path is at least reliable now. Real push is the 1.8.0 track: JMAP over WebSocket (RFC 8887, which Stalwart supports and which can authenticate properly) plus Web Push for background notifications, along with the PWA manifest and service worker this issue originally asked about.
