From 283f0470993b5c40c0430dffc62e5e0aea410a61 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Erik Arvidsson Date: Sat, 17 Oct 2026 04:53:04 +0200 Subject: [PATCH 1/2] feat: add Statement#stepIntoStrings() to read rows in batches stepIntoStrings(buffer, capacity, ...params) steps up to `capacity` rows per native call. Numbers are written into a caller-provided ArrayBuffer or SharedArrayBuffer (an 8-byte slot and a tag byte per value); TEXT and BLOB values are created natively and returned as one array per call. A call that does not exhaust the result leaves a cursor open, which later calls continue and closeCursor() abandons. An open cursor locks the statement and counts as an open iterator, exactly like iterate(). On a 92-row, 6-column range fetch this is 253 ns/row with plain row objects built in JS, against 598 ns/row for iterate() and 164 ns/row for the same scan done entirely in SQL. --- docs/api.md | 56 ++++- lib/index.d.ts | 12 ++ src/better_sqlite3.cpp | 1 + src/objects/statement-batch.cpp | 234 +++++++++++++++++++++ src/objects/statement.cpp | 5 +- src/objects/statement.hpp | 6 + src/util/binder.cpp | 19 +- test/27.statement.step-into-strings.js | 280 +++++++++++++++++++++++++ 8 files changed, 606 insertions(+), 7 deletions(-) create mode 100644 src/objects/statement-batch.cpp create mode 100644 test/27.statement.step-into-strings.js diff --git a/docs/api.md b/docs/api.md index 25de1a0..bb7315f 100644 --- a/docs/api.md +++ b/docs/api.md @@ -431,6 +431,8 @@ An object representing a single SQL statement. - [Statement#get()](#getbindparameters---row) - [Statement#all()](#allbindparameters---array-of-rows) - [Statement#iterate()](#iteratebindparameters---iterator) +- [Statement#stepIntoStrings()](#stepintostringsbuffer-capacity-bindparameters---array) +- [Statement#closeCursor()](#closecursor---this) - [Statement#pluck()](#plucktogglestate---this) - [Statement#expand()](#expandtogglestate---this) - [Statement#raw()](#rawtogglestate---this) @@ -513,6 +515,58 @@ for (const cat of stmt.iterate()) { } ``` +### .stepIntoStrings(*buffer*, *capacity*, [*...bindParameters*]) -> *array* + +**(only on statements that return data)* + +Reads up to `capacity` rows per call, for callers that consume many rows and want to avoid the cost of one native call and one row object per row.
