## 7. Open Data Engagement
177177

178-
So you’re opening up government data and making it easier to find and use – to inspire new ideas, spur economic growth, and ultimately make your agency more effective in achieving its mission. But you realize that your agency can’t just supply data – it’s also about getting and acting upon feedback, and catalyzing use of the data from a wide variety of stakeholders. A community event is a great way to hear ideas and feedback from passionate people, offer your expertise to people with thoughtful questions and evangelize your data assets. This document gives an overview of the main types of open data community events the U.S. Government holds.

A closed-press, day-long ideation event with developers, designers, and subject matter experts focused on one topic and top related open data sets. Several are held in succession, leading up to a datapalooza three months later. *Ex: Health Data jam (HHS), 21st Century Jobs Jam (OVP, Commerce, OSTP), Mitigating Campus Sexual Assault (Department of Education, Department of Justice)*

Press Release Guidance – Don't Forget the Data!
11+
---------------------------
12+
13+
Increasingly Agency press releases include a data element. Whether you are releasing a report, fact sheet, or special announcement, if there is a data element, you should provide this data as easily discoverable open data. This means linking to your open data in press releases and ensuring this data is as discoverable as possible on Data.gov.
14+
15+
### Step 1: Release all relevant data as "open data" - that is to say data that is structured, machine-readable, and legally unemcubered to be re-used by anyone.
16+
17+
### Step 2: Get your data on Data.gov in advance, with complete metadata.
18+
See [How to Get Your Open Data on Data.gov](http://www.digitalgov.gov/resources/how-to-get-your-open-data-on-data-gov/) or reach out to your Agency Open Data Policy Point of Contact](points-of-contact/) to ensure your data is listed in your Agency's data.json file. Data.gov updates nightly.
19+
20+
### Step 3: Hyperlink to Data.gov
21+
22+
> http://catalog.data.gov/dataset/l8-oli-tirs-landsat-surface-reflectance
23+
24+
If your report contains many datasets, you can tag all of these datasets with a common `keyword` for easier discoverability on Data.gov. You can also embed a list of your relevant datasets in your press release via Data.gov's embed feature.
25+
26+
### Bonus: Include a Suggested Citation
27+
28+
When using this dataset, please cite the original publication:
29+
30+
> U.S. Geological Survey, 2015, Landsat surface reflectance data (ver. 1.1, June 16, 2015): U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 2015–3034, 1 p., http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/fs20153034.
31+
ISSN 2327-6932 (online)
32+
33+
In addition, please cite the Data.gov record:
