Option to turn off bold/italic Markdown shortcuts while keeping the rich text composer

When I type Markdown by hand in the composer, like **word**, the rich text composer converts it as I type and I end up with an extra * at the end of what I wrote. I want to type the asterisks myself and have them stay as I typed them.

Right now the only fix is turning off Rich text composer in Settings. That turns off all live Markdown formatting, and I want to keep the rest of it.

Request: a setting to turn off the inline formatting shortcuts (bold **, italic *, strikethrough ~~) on their own, separate from the rich text composer. A per-shortcut setting would be fine too.
