Optional live source/preview split mode for Markdown files
#20831
When editing a Markdown workspace file, checking the rendered result requires switching between source and preview. This interrupts work on tables, lists and technical documents. Seeing both together would make it easier to check edits without repeatedly changing views.
Proposed scope
Add an optional source/preview split mode to the existing web/desktop file viewer:
Workspace source stays editable, with the existing autosave path and immediate preview updates.
Attached Markdown files can show source alongside the preview, with the source remaining read-only.
Narrow panes stack the two views; wider panes place them side by side.
Existing source-only and rendered-only modes remain available. The workspace split preference can be remembered between files.
This proposal does not include changes to RTL detection, math parsing, table alignment, or synchronized scrolling.
Prototype and evidence
Implementation reference: #20323. It was closed because this workflow needs prior maintainer agreement. We are asking for that direction/scope decision here before requesting reconsideration or preparing a revised PR.
The screenshot/recording show a local build with companion RTL, math and table changes; those are separate proposals and are not required for split view.
Maintainer decision requested
Would an optional split mode fit the intended file-viewer workflow? If so, should the first contribution cover workspace files only, or both workspace files and read-only attachments? We are happy to drop preference persistence or narrow the scope further.
The tradeoffs are another viewer control, more layout state, and rendering source and preview at the same time. An external editor remains an alternative; this proposal is for users reviewing and editing documents within T3 Code.
